Abstract

We have developed a numerical procedure to clarify the critical behavior near a quantum phase transition by analyzing a multipoint correlation function characterizing the ground state. This work presents a successful application of this procedure to the string order parameter of the $S=1$ $XXZ$ chain with uniaxial single-ion anisotropy. The finite-size string correlation function is estimated by the density-matrix renormalization-group method. We focus on the gradient of the inverse-system-size dependence of the correlation function on a logarithmic plot. This quantity shows that the finite-size scaling sensitively changes at the critical point. The behavior of the gradient with increasing system size is divergent, is stable at a finite value, or rapidly decreases to zero when the system is in the disordered phase, at the critical point, or in the ordered phase, respectively. The analysis of the finite-size string correlation functions allows precise determination of the boundary of the Haldane phase and estimation of the critical exponent of the correlation length. Our estimates of the transition point and the critical exponents, which are determined only by the ground-state quantities, are consistent with results obtained from the analysis of the energy-level structure. Our analysis requires only the correlation functions of several finite sizes under the same condition as a candidate for the long-range order. The quantity is treated in the same manner irrespective of the kind of elements which destroy the order concerned. This work will assist in the development of a method for directly observing quantum phase transitions.

Non-local Correlations in the Haldane Phase for an XXZ Spin-1 Chain: A Perspective from Infinite Matrix Product State Representation

Yao Heng Su, Sam Young Cho, Bo Li +2 more

String correlations are investigated in an infinite-size XXZ spin-1 chain. By using the infinite matrix product state representation, we calculate a long-range string order. In the XY phase, the string correlations decay within a relatively very large lattice distance, which makes a finite-size study difficult to verify the non-existence of the string order. Thus, in the Haldane phase, the non-vanishing string correlations in the limit of a very large distance allow to characterize the phase boundaries to the XY phase and the Neel phase, which implies that the transverse long-range string order is the order parameter for the Haldane phase. In addition, the singular behaviors of the von Neumann entropy and the fidelity per lattice site are shown to capture clearly the phase transition points that are consistent with the results from the string order. The estimated critical points including a BKT transition from the XY phase to the Haldane phase agree well with the previous results: $Δ_{c2} = 0$ for the XY-Haldane phase transition and $Δ_{c3} = 1.185$ for the Haldane-N'eel phase transition from the density renormalization group. From a finite-entanglement scaling of the von Neumann entropy with respect to the truncation dimension, the central charges are found to be $c \simeq 1.0$ at $Δ_{c2} = 0$ and $c \simeq 0.5$ at $Δ_{c3} = 1.185$, respectively, which shows that the XY-Haldane phase transition at $Δ_{c2} = 0$ belongs to the Heisenberg universality class, while the Haldane-Neel phase transition at $Δ_{c2} = 1.185$ belongs to the two-dimensional classical Ising universality class. It is also shown that, the long-range order parameters and the von Neumann entropy, as well as the fidelity per site approach, can be applied to characterize quantum phase transitions as a universal phase transition indicator for one-dimensional lattice many-body systems.

Ground-state phase diagram of S=1 XXZ chains with uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy

Wei Chen, Kazuo Hida, B. C. Sanctuary

One-dimensional $S=1$ $\mathrm{XXZ}$ chains with uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy are studied by numerical exact diagonalization of finite-size systems. The numerical data are analyzed using conformal field theory, the level spectroscopy, phenomenological renormalization-group, and finite-size scaling method. We thus present a quantitatively reliable ground-state phase diagram of this model. The ground states of this model contain the Haldane phase, large-D phase, N\'eel phase, two $\mathrm{XY}$ phases, and the ferromagnetic phase. There are four different types of transitions between these phases: the Brezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transitions, the Gaussian-type transitions, the Ising-type transitions, and the first-order transitions. The locations of these critical lines are accurately determined.

Accurate determination of the Gaussian transition in spin-1 chains with single-ion anisotropy

Shijie Hu, Bruce Normand, Xiaoqun Wang +1 more

The Gaussian transition in the spin-1 Heisenberg chain with single-ion anisotropy is extremely difficult to treat, both analytically and numerically. We introduce an improved density-matrix renormalization group procedure with strict error control, which we use to access very large systems. By considering the bulk entropy, we determine the Gaussian transition point to four-digit accuracy, ${D}_{c}/J=0.968\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}45(8)$, resolving a long-standing debate in quantum magnetism. With this value, we obtain high-precision data for the critical behavior of quantities, including the ground-state energy, gap, and transverse string-order parameter, and for the critical exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}=1.472(2)$. Applying our improved technique at ${J}_{z}=0.5$ highlights essential differences in critical behavior along the Gaussian transition line.

Fidelity approach to quantum phase transitions: finite-size scaling for the quantum Ising model in a transverse field

Huan-Qiang Zhou, Jian-Hui Zhao, Bo Li

We analyze the fidelity per lattice site for two different ground states of the one-dimensional quantum Ising model in a transverse field near the critical point. It is found that, in the thermodynamic limit, the fidelity per lattice site is singular, and the derivative of its logarithmic function with respect to the transverse field strength is logarithmically divergent at the critical point. The scaling behavior is confirmed numerically by performing a finite-size scaling analysis for systems of different sizes, consistent with the conformal invariance at the critical point. This allows us to extract the correlation length critical exponent, which turns out to be universal in the sense that the correlation length critical exponent does not depend on either the anisotropic parameter or the transverse field strength.

Cumulants and scaling functions of infinite matrix product states

Jason C. Pillay, Ian P. McCulloch

The order parameter cumulants of infinite matrix product ground states are evaluated across a quantum phase transition. A scheme using the Binder cumulant, finite-entanglement scaling, and scaling functions to obtain the critical point and exponents of the correlation length and cumulants is presented. Analogous to the scaling relations that relate the exponents of various thermodynamic quantities, a cumulant exponent relation is derived and used to check the consistency and relationship between the cumulant exponents. This scheme gives a numerically economical way of accurately obtaining the critical exponents. Examples of this scheme are shown for four one-dimensional models---the transverse field Ising model, the topological Kondo insulator, the $S=1$ Heisenberg chain with single-ion anisotropy and the Bose-Hubbard model. A two-dimensional model is also exemplified in the square lattice transverse field Ising model on an infinite cylinder. These exemplary systems portray a variety of local and string order parameters as well as phase transition classes that can be studied with the scaling functions and infinite matrix product states.

Tangential finite-size scaling at the Gaussian topological transition in the quantum spin-1 anisotropic chain

Luan M. Veríssimo, Maria S. S. Pereira, M. L. Lyra

Scaling aspects of Gaussian topological phase transitions in quantum spin chains are investigated using the prototypical one-dimensional spin-1 XXZ Heisenberg model with uniaxial single-ion anisotropy $D$. This model presents a critical line separating the gapped Haldane and large-$D$ phases, with the relevant energy gap closing at the transition point. We show that a proper tangential finite-size scaling analysis is able to accurately locate the Gaussian critical line and to probe the continuously varying set of correlation length critical exponents. The specific features of the tangential scaling are highlighted, in contrast to the standard scaling holding in the Ising-like transition between the gapless antiferromagnetic N\'eel and gapped Haldane phases. Our results are compared with field-theoretic predictions and available high-accuracy data for specific points along the Gaussian line.
