Two-dimensional quantum random walk

Abstract

We analyze several families of two-dimensional quantum random walks. The feasible region (the region where probabilities do not decay exponentially with time) grows linearly with time, as is the case with one-dimensional QRW. The limiting shape of the feasible region is, however, quite different. The limit region turns out to be an algebraic set, which we characterize as the rational image of a compact algebraic variety. We also compute the probability profile within the limit region, which is essentially a negative power of the Gaussian curvature of the same algebraic variety. Our methods are based on analysis of the space-time generating function, following the methods of Pemantle and Wilson (2002).

Quantum Random Walks on the integer lattice via generating functions

Andrew Bressler

We analyze several families of one and two-dimensional nearest neighbor Quantum Random Walks. Using a multivariate generating function analysis we give a simplified proof of a known phenomenon for two-chirality walks on the line, namely that the walk has linear speed rather than the diffusive behavior observed in classical random walks. We also demonstrate Airy phenomena between the regions of polynomial and exponential decay. For a three-chirality walk on the line we demonstrate similar behavior, with the addition of a bound state, in which the probability of finding the particle at the origin does not go to zero with time. For each of these walks on the line we obtain exact formulae for the leading asymptotic term of the wave function and the location probabilities. Analyzing two-dimensional walks we again find a region of polynomial decay which grows linearly with time. We close with preliminary work concerning walks in higher dimensions.

Quantum random walk on the integer lattice: examples and phenomena

Andrew Bressler, Torin Greenwood, Robin Pemantle +1 more

We apply results from Baryshnikov, Brady, Bressler and Pemantle (2008) to compute limiting probability profiles for various quantum random walks in one and two dimensions. Using analytic machinery we show some features of the limit distribution that are not evident in an empirical intensity plot of the time 10,000 distribution. Some conjectures are stated and computational techniques are discussed as well.

Bifurcation Curves of Two-Dimensional Quantum Walks

Parker Kuklinski, Mark Kon

The quantum walk differs fundamentally from the classical random walk in a number of ways, including its linear spreading and initial condition dependent asymmetries. Using stationary phase approximations, precise asymptotics have been derived for one-dimensional two-state quantum walks, one-dimensional three-state Grover walks, and two-dimensional four-state Grover walks. Other papers have investigated asymptotic behavior of a much larger set of two-dimensional quantum walks and it has been shown that in special cases the regions of polynomial decay can be parameterized. In this paper, we show that these regions of polynomial decay are bounded by algebraic curves which can be explicitly computed. We give examples of these bifurcation curves for a number of two-dimensional quantum walks.

A path integral formula with applications to quantum random walks inZd

Wei-Shih Yang, Chaobin Liu, Kai Zhang

We consider general quantum random walks in a d -dimensional half-space. We first obtain a path integral formula for general quantum random walks in a d -dimensional space. Our path integral formula is valid for general quantum random walks on Cayley graphs as well. Then the path integral formula is applied to obtain the scaling limit of the exit distribution, the expectation of exit time and the asymptotic behaviour of the exit probabilities, for general quantum random walks in a half-space under some conditions on amplitude functions. The conditions are shown to be satisfied by both the Hadamard and Grover quantum random walks in two-dimensional half-spaces. For the two-dimensional case, we show that the critical exponent for the scaling limit of the hitting distribution is 1 as the lattice spacing tends to zero, i.e. the natural magnitude of the hitting position is of order O (1) if the lattice spacing is set to be 1/ n . We also show that the rate of convergence of the total hitting probability has lower bound n −2 and upper bound n −2+ for any > 0. For a quantum random walk with a fixed starting point, we show that the probability of hitting times at the hyperplane decays faster than that of the classical random walk. In both one and two dimensions, given the event of a hit, the conditional expectation of hitting times is finite, in contrast to being infinite for the classical case. In the one-dimensional case, we also obtain an exact order of the probability distribution of the hitting time at 0.

Coherent random walks in free space

Toni Eichelkraut, Christian Vetter, Armando Pérez-Leija +3 more

Two-dimensional continuous time quantum random walks (CTQRW) are physical processes where quantum particles simultaneously evolve in different permissible directions within discrete graphs. In order to force the quantum walkers (QWs) to evolve in such a fashion, one generally requires periodic potentials. Here, we demonstrate that two-dimensional CTQRW can be generated in free space by properly tailoring the initial wave functions. We analytically show that within a certain spatial region the arising probability distribution quantitatively resembles the probability pattern exhibited by a QW traversing a periodic lattice potential. These theoretical predictions were experimentally verified using classical laser light, appropriately shaped by a spatial light modulator. Expanding the presented results to the case of multiple walkers may open new possibilities in quantum information technology using bulk optics. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

ON ALGEBRAIC AND QUANTUM RANDOM WALKS

Demosthenes Ellinas

Algebraic random walks (ARW) and quantum mechanical random walks (QRW) are investigated and related. Based on minimal data provided by the underlying bialgebras of functions defined on e. g the real line R, the abelian finite group Z_N, and the canonical Heisenberg-Weyl algebra hw, and by introducing appropriate functionals on those algebras, examples of ARWs are constructed. These walks involve short and long range transition probabilities as in the case of R walk, bistochastic matrices as for the case of Z_N walk, or coherent state vectors as in the case of hw walk. The increase of classical entropy due to majorization order of those ARWs is shown, and further their corresponding evolution equations are obtained. Especially for the case of hw ARW, the diffusion limit of evolution equation leads to a quantum master equation for the density matrix of a boson system interacting with a bath of quantum oscillators prepared in squeezed vacuum state. A number of generalizations to other types of ARWs and some open problems are also stated. Next, QRWs are briefly presented together with some of their distinctive properties, such as their enhanced diffusion rates, and their behavior in respect to the relation of majorization to quantum entropy. Finally, the relation of ARWs to QRWs is investigated in terms of the theorem of unitary extension of completely positive trace preserving (CPTP) evolution maps by means of auxiliary vector spaces. It is applied to extend the CPTP step evolution map of a ARW for a quantum walker system into a unitary step evolution map for an associated QRW of a walker+quantum coin system. Examples and extensions are provided.
