Abstract

In a celebrated paper ([Phys. Rev. A 58, 883 (1998)]), K. Zyczkowski, P. Horodecki, A. Sanpera, and M. Lewenstein proved for the frst time a very interesting theorem that the volume of separable quantum states is nonzero. Inspired by their ideas, we obtain a general analytical lower bound of the volume of separable states (VOSS) for arbitrary N-dimensional system. Our results give quite simple and computable suffcient conditions for separability. Moreover, for bipartite system, an upper bound of the VOSS is also presented.

Volume of the set of separable states

Karol Życzkowski, Paweł Horodecki, Anna Sanpera +1 more

The question of how many entangled or, respectively, separable states there are in the set of all quantum states is considered. We propose a natural measure in the space of density matrices $\ensuremath{\varrho}$ describing $N$-dimensional quantum systems. We prove that, under this measure, the set of separable states possesses a nonzero volume. Analytical lower and upper bounds of this volume are also derived for $N=2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2$ and $N=2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}3$ cases. Finally, numerical Monte Carlo calculations allow us to estimate the volume of separable states, providing numerical evidence that it decreases exponentially with the dimension of the composite system. We have also analyzed a conditional measure of separability under the condition of fixed purity. Our results display a clear dualism between purity and separability: entanglement is typical of pure states, while separability is connected with quantum mixtures. In particular, states of sufficiently low purity are necessarily separable.

On the Bures Volume of Separable Quantum States ∗

Deping Ye

We obtain two sided estimates for the Bures volume of an arbitrary subset of the set of N × N density matrices, in terms of the Hilbert-Schmidt volume of that subset. For general subsets, our results are essentially optimal (for large N). As applications, we derive in particular nontrivial lower and upper bounds for the Bures volume of sets of separable states and for sets of states with positive partial transpose. Two-Qubit Separability Probabilities: A Concise Formula

Paul B. Slater

We report a concise answer--in the case of 2 x 2 systems--to the fundamental quantum-information-theoretic question as to "the volume of separable states" posed by Zyczkowski, Horodecki, Sanpera and Lewenstein (Phys. Rev. A, 58, 883 [1998]). We proceed by applying the Mathematica command FindSequenceFunction to a series of conjectured Hilbert-Schmidt generic 2 x 2 (rational-valued) separability probabilities p(a), a = 1, 2,...,32, with a = 1 indexing standard two-qubit systems, and a = 2, two-quater(nionic)bit systems. These 32 inputted values of p(a)--as well as 32 companion non-inputted values for the half-integers, a = 1/2 (two-re[al]bit) systems), 3/2,..., 63/2, are advanced on the basis of high-precision probability-distribution-reconstruction computations, employing 7,501 determinantal moments of partially transposed 4 x 4 density matrices. The function P(a) given by application of the command fully reproduces both of these 32-length sequences, and an equivalent outcome is obtained if the half-integral series is the one inputted. The lengthy expression (containing six hypergeometric functions) obtained for P(a) is, then, impressively condensed (by Qing-Hu Hou and colleagues), using Zeilberger's algorithm. For generic (9-dimensional) two-rebit systems, P(1/2) = 29/64, (15-dimensional) two-qubit systems, P(1) = 8/33, (27-dimensional) two-quaterbit systems, P(2) = 26/323, while for generic classical (3-dimensional) systems, P(0)=1.

Lower bounds on concurrence and separability conditions

Julio I. de Vicente

We obtain analytical lower bounds on the concurrence of bipartite quantum systems in arbitrary dimensions related to the violation of separability conditions based on local uncertainty relations and on the Bloch representation of density matrices. We also illustrate how these results complement and improve those recently derived [Chen, Albeverio, and Fei, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 040504 (2005)] by considering the Peres-Horodecki and the computable cross-norm or realignment criteria.

On the comparison of volumes of quantum states

Deping Ye

This paper aims to study the α-volume of , an arbitrary subset of the set of N × N density matrices. The α-volume is a generalization of the Hilbert–Schmidt volume and the volume induced by partial trace. We obtain two-side estimates for the α-volume of in terms of its Hilbert–Schmidt volume. The analogous estimates between the Bures volume and the α-volume are also established. We employ our results to obtain bounds for the α-volume of the sets of separable quantum states and of states with positive partial transpose. Hence, our asymptotic results provide answers for questions listed in Życzkowski et al (1998 Phys. Rev. A 58 883) for large N in the sense of α-volume.
