Simulation Monte-Carlo du Modèle de Hubbard à deux dimensions

Abstract

The Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional Hubbard model are presented for the half filling. The method based on the direct-space proposed by Suzuki and al., and Hirsch and al. was used. The states generated by this method are basis states in occupation number representation built with Wannier states localised on each site of the square array. The configurations of fermions can be observed on the real 2D array. An antiferromagnetic factor is defined and calculated for each temperature. The curves of energy, specific heat, conducivity and antiferromagnetic factor are presented for different values of the repulsive coulombian on site interaction U. There is a metal-insulator transition at low temperature for small values of U. This transition corresponds with a paramagnetic-ferromagnetic first order transition. Indeed, for these interaction values, the energy curves show a gap which is a characteristic of a first order transition. An hysteresis phenomenon appears on the conductivity curves. There is a behaviour change for U/t=3.5. For the values U>3.5 there is ferromagnetic-paramagnetic change without observable effect on the energy and the specific heat. The metal-insulator transition does not exist any more, the conductivity stays very small. Isotherms of the physical quantities versus U/t show a transition which seems to be the metal-insulator Mott transition. These results allow to draw a phase diagram with two first order transition lines.

Quantum Monte Carlo Simulation of the two-dimensional ionic Hubbard model

B. Martinie

The Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the ionic Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice at half filling were performed. The method based on the direct-space, proposed by Suzuki and al., Hirsch and al., was used. Cycles of increasing and decreasing values of the Coulomb interaction $ U $ were performed for fixed temperature ($ kT=0.01 $). Results indicate that, at low temperature, the two insulator phases are separated by a metallic phase for weak to intermediate values of the staggered potential $ Δ$. For large Coulomb repulsion the system is in a Mott insulator with an antiferromagnetism order. On increasing and decreasing the Coulomb interaction $ U $ the metal-Mott insulator transition shows an hysteresis phenomenon while the metal-band insulator transition is continue. For large $ Δ$ it seems that the metallic region shrinks to a single metallic point. However, the band insulator to the Mott insulator transition is not direct for the studied model. A phase diagram is drawn for the temperature $ kT=0.01 $. For $ Δ=0.5 $ cycles of increasing and decreasing temperature were programmed for different values of the Coulomb interaction $ U $ . A behaviour change appears for $ U\simeq 1.75 $. This suggests that a crossover line divides the metallic region of the phase diagram.

Phase diagram of the square lattice bilayer Hubbard model: a variational Monte Carlo study

Rüger, R., Luca F. Tocchio, Valenti, R. +1 more

Abstract. We investigate the phase diagram of the square lattice bilayer Hubbard model at half filling with the variational Monte Carlo method for both the magnetic and the paramagnetic case as a function of the interlayer hopping t ⊥ and on-site Coulomb repulsion U. With this study we resolve some discrepancies in previous calculations based on the dynamical mean field theory, and we are able to determine the nature of the phase transitions between metal, Mott insulator and band insulator. In the magnetic case we find only two phases: An antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at small t ⊥ for any value of U and a band insulator at large t⊥. At large U values we approach the Heisenberg limit. The paramagnetic phase diagram shows at small t ⊥ a metal to Mott insulator transition at moderate U values and a Mott to band insulator transition at larger U values. We also observe a re-entrant Mott insulator to metal transition and metal to band insulator transition for increasing t ⊥ in the range of 5.5t < U < 7.5t. Finally, we discuss the obtained phase diagrams in relation to previous studies based on different many-body approaches. PACS numbers: 71.10.Fd, 71.27.+a, 71.30.+h 1.

Paramagnetic metal-insulator transition in the 2D Hubbard model

C. Gröber, M. G. Zacher, R. Eder

We study the transition from paramagnetic metal to paramagnetic insulator by finite temperature Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations for the 2D Hubbard model at half-filling. Working at the moderately high temperature T=0.33*t where the spin correlation length has dropped to 1.5 lattice spacings, and scanning the interaction strength U, we observe an unambiguous metal-insulator transition with onset at U_c=4t. In the metallic phase there are no indications of any `correlation narrowing' of the band width, nor for any decrease of spectral weight at the Fermi energy. The Mott-Hubbard gap opens gradually with increasing U and is accompanied by the formation of side bands near the Fermi energy. In the first stages of gap formation the gap opens at (pi,0), reminiscent of the `pseudogap' phenomenology in cuprate superconductors.

Hubbard and Kondo lattice models in two dimensions : a QMC study

M. Feldbacher

This thesis discusses mainly two Fermionic lattice systems, first a Kondo lattice with additional Hubbard interaction and second a Hubbard Hamiltonian augmented with additional spin and charge interactions. We first introduce the Quantum Monte Carlo technique, which is then employed to study the two respective systems. We present an innovation that allows to calculate time displaced Greens functions more efficiently. Compared with previously used numerically stable algorithms the new method gains an order of magnitude in speed, but is just as precise, and very simple to implement. In the second chapter we consider the Kondo lattice model in two dimensions at half filling. In addition to the Fermionic hopping integral t and the superexchange coupling J the role of a Coulomb repulsion U in the conduction band is investigated. We find the model to display a magnetic order-disorder transition in the U-J plane with a critical value of Jc which is decreasing as a function of U. The single-particle spectral function A(k,ω) is computed across this transition. We conclude that (i) the local screening of impurity spins determines the low-energy behavior of the spectral function and (ii) one cannot deform continuously the spectral function of the half-filled Hubbard model at J=0 to that of the Kondo insulator at J>Jc. In the third chapter we investigate the phase diagram of a new model that exhibits a first order transition between s-wave superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases. The model, a generalized Hubbard model augmented with competing spin-spin and pair-pair interactions, was investigated using the projector quantum Monte Carlo method. Upon varying the Hubbard U from attractive to repulsive, we find a first order phase transition between superconducting and antiferromagnetic states.

Two-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half-filling

A. Sherman

Abstract We consider the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice at half-filling. The model is investigated using the strong coupling diagram technique. We sum infinite series of ladder diagrams allowing for full-scale charge and spin fluctuations and the actual short-range antiferromagnetic order for nonzero temperatures. In agreement with earlier results, we find the first-order phase transition in the charge subsystem occurring at v = v c ≳ U/4 with v and U the intersite and on-site Coulomb repulsion constants. The transition reveals itself in an abrupt sign change of a sharp maximum in the zero-frequency charge susceptibility at the corner of the Brillouin. States arising at the transition have alternating deviations of electron occupations from the mean value on neighboring sites. Due to fluctuations, these alternating occupation deviations have short-range order. For the considered parameters, such behavior is found for U ≲ 5t with t the hopping constant. For the insulating case U ≳ 6t, in which the transition is not observed, we find a continuous growth of the Mott gap with v. The evolution of the electron density of states with increasing v is also considered.
