Abstract

We investigate the non-Markovian dynamics of two-state systems in structured reservoirs. We establish a connection between two theoretical quantum approaches, the pseudomodes [B. M. Garraway, Phys. Rev. A 55, 2290 (1997)] and the recently developed non-Markovian quantum jump method [J. Piilo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 180402 (2008)]. This connection provides a clear physical picture of how the structured reservoir affects the system dynamics, suggesting the role of the pseudomodes as effective description of environmental memory.

Quantum speedup and non-Markovianity of an atom in structured reservoirs: pseudomodes as a good description of environmental memory

Maryam Hadipour, Soroush Haseli, Saeed Haddadi

Abstract Following the recent paper (Teittinen et al 2019 New J. Phys. 21 123041), one can see that in general there is no simple relation between non-Markovianity and quantum speed limit. Here, we investigate the connection between quantum speed limit time and non-Markovianity of an atom in structured environments (reservoirs) whose dynamics is governed by an exact pseudomode master equation (Garraway 1997 Phys. Rev. A 55 2290). In particular, we find an inverse relation between them, which means that the non-Markovian feature of the quantum process leads to speedup of evolution. Thus, there is a link between quantum speedup and memory effects for specific cases of dynamical evolution. Our results might shed light on the relationship between the speedup of quantum evolution and the backflow of information from the environment to the system.

Memory effect and pseudomode amplitude in non-Markovian dynamics of a two level system

Yuta Ohyama, 康弘 都倉

We study non-Markovian dynamics of a two level atom using pseudomode method. Because of the memory effect of non-Markovian dynamics, the atom receives back information and excited energy from the reservoir at a later time, which causes more complicated behaviors than Markovian dynamics. With pseudomode method, non-Markovian dynamics of the atom can be mapped into Markovian dynamics of the atom and pseudomode. We show that by using pseudomode method and quantum jump approach for Markovian dynamics, we get a physically intuitive insight into the memory effect of non-Markovian dynamics. It suggests a simple physical meaning of the memory time of a non-Markovian reservoir.

Open system dynamics with non-Markovian quantum jumps

Jyrki Piilo, Kari Härkönen, Sabrina Maniscalco +1 more

We discuss in detail how non-Markovian open system dynamics can be described in terms of quantum jumps [J. Piilo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 180402 (2008)]. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to have a jump description contained in the physical Hilbert space of the reduced system. The developed non-Markovian quantum jump approach is a generalization of the Markovian Monte Carlo wave function (MCWF) method into the non-Markovian regime. The method conserves both the probabilities in the density matrix and the norms of the state vectors exactly and sheds new light on non-Markovian dynamics. The dynamics of the pure state ensemble illustrates how local-in-time master equation can describe memory effects and how the current state of the system carries information on its earlier state. Our approach solves the problem of negative jump probabilities of the Markovian MCWF method in the non-Markovian regime by defining the corresponding jump process with positive probability. The results demonstrate that in the theoretical description of non-Markovian open systems, there occurs quantum jumps which recreate seemingly lost superpositions due to the memory.

Generalized theory of pseudomodes for exact descriptions of non-Markovian quantum processes

Graeme Pleasance, Barry M. Garraway, Francesco Petruccione

We develop an exact framework for describing the non-Markovian dynamics of an open quantum system interacting with an environment modeled by a generalized spectral density function. The approach relies on mapping the initial system onto an auxiliary configuration, comprising the original open system coupled to a small number of discrete modes, which in turn are each coupled to an independent Markovian reservoir.Based on the connection between the discrete modes and the poles of the spectral density function, we show how expanding the system using the discrete modes allows for the full inclusion non-Markovian effects within an enlarged open system whose dynamics is governed by an exact Lindblad master equation.Initially we apply this result to obtain a generalization of the pseudomode method [B.M. Garraway, Phys. Rev. A. 55, 2290 (1997)] in cases where the spectral density function has a Lorentzian structure. For many other types of spectral density function, we extend our proof to show that an open system dynamics may be modeled physically using discrete modes which admit a non-Hermitian coupling to the system and for such cases determine the equivalent master equation to no longer be of Lindblad form. For applications involving two discrete modes, we demonstrate how to convert between pathological and Lindblad forms of the master equation using the techniques of the pseudomode method.

Non-Markovian Quantum Optical Processes and Pseudomodes

Bryan J. Dalton, Stephen Mark Barnett, B. M. Garraway

Non-Markovian behaviour in atomic systems coupled to a structured reservoir of quantum EM field modes, such as in high Q cavities, is treated using a quasimode description, and the pseudo mode theory for single quantum reservoir excitations is obtained via Fano diagonalisation. The atomic transitions are coupled to a discrete set of (cavity) quasimodes, which are also coupled to a continuum set of (external) quasimodes with slowly varying coupling constants. Each pseudomode corresponds to a cavity quasimode, and the original reservoir structure is obtained in expressions for the equivalent atom-true mode coupling constants. Cases of multiple excitation of the reservoir are now treatable via Markovian master equations for the atom-discrete quasimode system.
