Proposed all-versus-nothing violation of local realism in the Kitaev spin-lattice model

Abstract

We investigate the nonlocal property of the fractional statistics in Kitaev's toric code model. To this end, we construct the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger paradox which builds a direct conflict between the statistics and local realism. It turns out that the fractional statistics in the model is purely a quantum effect and independent of any classical theory. We also discuss a feasible experimental scheme using anyonic interferometry to test this contradiction.

Genuine tripartite nonlocality for random measurements in Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-class states and its experimental test

Artur Barasiński, Antonín Černoch, Karel Lemr +1 more

We present a comprehensive numerical analysis of violations of local realism by tripartite generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. As an indicator of nonlocality we use the nonlocal fraction which describes the probability of violation of local realism under randomly sampled observables. We compare two kinds of local realism based on standard and hybrid local--nonlocal models. As a result, we show a great disproportion of the results determined for both models. Although the nonlocal fraction for standard local realism and tripartite generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states significantly increases compared to the bipartite Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt scenario, the genuine tripartite nonlocality (the strongest form of nonlocal correlations) is observed with probability much smaller than its bipartite counterpart. Furthermore, when the effects of decoherence on these states are introduced, such disproportion becomes significantly greater. Finally, we present the statistical relevance of various classes of tight Bell inequalities as they are of paramount importance for practical experimental investigation of all problems discussed in this paper. We also propose the nonlocal fraction of hybrid local--nonlocal realism as a measure of genuine tripartite entanglement.

All-versus-nothing violation of local realism in the one-dimensional Ising model

Dong-Ling Deng, Jing‐Ling Chen

We show all-versus-nothing proofs of Bell's theorem in the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model, which is one of the most important exactly solvable models in the field of condensed matter physics. Since this model can be simulated with nuclear magnetic resonance, our work might lead to a fresh approach to experimental test of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger contradiction between local realism and quantum mechanics.

Fault-Tolerant Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger Paradox Based on Non-Abelian Anyons

Dong-Ling Deng, Chunfeng Wu, Jing‐Ling Chen +1 more

We propose a scheme to test the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger paradox based on braidings of non-Abelian anyons, which are exotic quasiparticle excitations of topological states of matter. Because topological ordered states are robust against local perturbations, this scheme is in some sense "fault-tolerant" and might close the detection inefficiency loophole problem in previous experimental tests of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger paradox. In turn, the construction of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger paradox reveals the nonlocal property of non-Abelian anyons. Our results indicate that the non-Abelian fractional statistics is a pure quantum effect and cannot be described by local realistic theories. Finally, we present a possible experimental implementation of the scheme based on the anyonic interferometry technologies.

Macroscopic boson states exhibiting the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger contradiction with local realism

M. D. Reid, William J. Munro

It is shown that the recent Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger ``all or nothing'' contradiction of quantum mechanics with local realism can be exhibited on a macroscopic scale where a large number of particles are incident on each analyzer. We present a formulation of the all or nothing paradox in terms of boson fields, and suggest how the paradox might be realized using a correlated photon triplet. The suggested experiment might be readily extended to test, for the first time to our knowledge, quantum mechanics against local realism for situations of more than one quanta per wave packet incident on each measurement apparatus.

General proof of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger theorem

Zeqian Chen

It is proved that all states of three spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles exhibiting an ``all versus nothing'' contradiction between quantum mechanics and the local realism of Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen are exactly the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states and the states obtained from them by local unitary transformations. The proof is obtained by showing that there are at most four elements (except for a different sign) in a set of mutually commuting nonlocal spin observables in the three-qubit system and using the certain algebraic properties that Pauli's matrices satisfy. We show that only does such a set of four nonlocal spin observables present a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-Mermin-like argument. This also reveals the equivalence between the GHZ theorem and maximal violation of the Bell inequality.

Experimental Violation of Local Realism by Four-Photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger Entanglement

Zhi Zhao, Tao Yang, Yu-Ao Chen +3 more

We report the first experimental violation of local realism by four-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entanglement. In the experiment, the nonstatistical GHZ conflicts between quantum mechanics and local realism are confirmed, within the experimental accuracy, by four specific measurements of polarization correlations between four photons. In addition, our experimental results also demonstrate a strong violation of Mermin-Ardehali-Belinskii-Klyshko inequality by 76 standard deviations. Such a violation can only be attributed to genuine four-photon entanglement.
