Doubly excited ferromagnetic spin chain as a pair of coupled kicked rotors

Abstract

We show that the dynamics of a doubly excited Heisenberg spin chain, subject to short pulses from a parabolic magnetic field may be analyzed as a pair of quantum kicked rotors. By focusing on the two-magnon dynamics in the kicked XXZ model we investigate how the anisotropy parameter--which controls the strength of the magnon-magnon interaction--changes the nature of the coupling between the two "image" coupled kicked rotors. We investigate quantum state transfer possibilities and show that one may control whether the spin excitations are transmitted together, or separate from each other.

Quantum chaos and entanglement in spin-chains : dynamics of a periodically kicked Heisenberg ferromagnet

T. Boness

The Heisenberg spin-chain and the Quantum Kicked Rotor (QKR) are key models in condensed matter and quantum chaos respectively. The former, consisting of a line of qubits that interact with their neighbours through an exchange interaction, has recently received much attention in the context of quantum information and communication. In particular, it has been shown that a Heisenberg chain can be used as a channel for the transfer quantum states and the sharing of entanglement. The QKR, on the other hand, is a paradigm of quantum chaos. It is one of a valuable collection of quantum systems with a well dened classical limit that shows both regular and chaotic dynamics. This thesis investigates the dynamics of a Heisenberg chain subjected to periodic ±-kicks from a parabolic magnetic eld. It will be shown that, when perturbed in this way, spin-chains can provide realizations of QKR systems. Using this connection, well-known features of the dynamics of kicked rotors can be used to manipulate the evolution of excitations and entanglement in the spin-chain. Conversely, results from the spin-chain analysis can inform our knowledge of the kicked rotor systems. The focus of the rst part of this thesis is the dynamics of singly excited chains. In this case, the kicked Heisenberg chain is shown to be dynamically equivalent to a QKR. Similar correspondences can be found. Two examples, spin-chain realizations of the Double-Kicked Rotor and a double-well kicked rotor, are explored. Later sections are concerned with the dynamics of multiple excitations. These excitations interact - scattering or forming bound states of inverted spins. The kicked chain now corresponds to a system of coupled kicked rotors. It will be shown that by tuning the parameters it is possible to control the time-evolution of correlations in the chain.

Quantum Chaos with Spin-Chains in Pulsed Magnetic Fields

T. Boness, M. M. A. Stocklin, T. S. Monteiro

Recently it was found that the dynamics in a Heisenberg spin-chain subjected to a sequence of periodic pulses from an external, parabolic, magnetic field can have a close correspondence with the quantum kicked rotor (QKR). The QKR is a key paradigm of quantum chaos; it has as its classical limit the well-known Standard Map. It was found that a single spin excitation could be converted into a pair of non-dispersive, counter-propagating spin coherent states equivalent to the accelerator modes of the Standard Map. Here we consider how other types of quantum chaotic systems such as a double-kicked quantum rotor or a quantum rotor with a double-well potential might be realized with spin chains; we discuss the possibilities regarding manipulation of the one-magnon spin waves.

Entanglement and Dynamics of Spin Chains in Periodically Pulsed Magnetic Fields: Accelerator Modes

T. Boness, Sougato Bose, T. S. Monteiro

We study the dynamics of a single excitation in a Heisenberg spin-chain subjected to a sequence of periodic pulses from an external, parabolic, magnetic field. We show that, for experimentally reasonable parameters, a pair of counterpropagating coherent states is ejected from the center of the chain. We find an illuminating correspondence with the quantum time evolution of the well-known paradigm of quantum chaos, the quantum kicked rotor. From this we can analyze the entanglement production and interpret the ejected coherent states as a manifestation of the so-called "accelerator modes" of a classically chaotic system.

Effects of magnetic anisotropy on spin dynamics of ferromagnetic frustrated chain

Hiroaki Onishi

By exploiting density-matrix renormalization group techniques, we investigate the spin dynamics of a spin-1/2 one-dimensional J 1 - J 2 XXZ model with competing ferromagnetic J 1 and antiferromagnetic J 2 exchange couplings under applied magnetic fields. Numerical results of spin excitation spectra show that in the field-induced spin quadrupole regime, the longitudinal component has a gapless mode and the transverse component has a gapped mode irrespective of the exchange anisotropy. The excitation gap of the transverse spin excitation increases as the exchange anisotropy increases over the XY-like and Ising-like regions, demonstrating that two-magnon bound states are stabilized due to the easy-axis anisotropy.

Information transmission and control in a chaotically kicked spin chain

Lucile Aubourg, David Viennot

Abstract We study spin chains submitted to disturbed kick trains described by classical dynamical processes. The spin chains are coupled by Heisenberg and Ising-Z models. We consider chaotic processes by using the kick irregularity in the multipartite system (the spin chain). We show that both couplings transmit the chaos disorder differently along the spin chain but conserve the horizon of coherence (when the disorder into the kick bath is transmitted to the spin chain). An example of information transmission between the spins of the chain coupled by a Heisenberg interaction shows the interest of the horizon of coherence. The use of some chosen stationary kicks disturbed by a chaotic environment makes it possible to modify the information transmission between the spins and to perform a free control during the horizon of coherence.

Semiclassical approach to spin dynamics of a ferromagnetic S = 1 chain

C. H. Li, Yi Cui, Weiqiang Yu +1 more

Abstract Motivated by recent experimental progress on the quasi-one-dimensional quantum magnet NiNb2O6, we study the spin dynamics of an S = 1 ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with single-ion anisotropy by using a semiclassical molecular dynamics approach. This system undergoes a quantum phase transition from a ferromagnetic to a paramagnetic state under a transverse magnetic field, and the magnetic response reflecting this transition is well described by our semiclassical method. We show that at low temperature the transverse component of the dynamical structure factor depicts clearly the magnon dispersion, and the longitudinal component exhibits two continua associated with single- and two-magnon excitations, respectively. These spin excitation spectra show interesting temperature dependence as effects of magnon interactions. Our findings shed light on the experimental detection of spin excitations in a large class of quasi-one-dimensional magnets.
