Characterization of entanglement in multiqubit systems via spin squeezing

Abstract

Quantum entanglement reflects itself through non-local correlations among the subsystems of a quantum system. This thesis focuses on constructing a complete set of local invariants characterizing symmetric two qubit systems and analyzing the pairwise entanglement properties like collective spin squeezing - exhibited by multiqubits - in terms of two qubit entanglement invariants. Further, the collective pairwise entanglement properties of symmetric multiqubit states are shown to be captured entirely by the off diagonal block of the covariance matrix.

LOCAL INVARIANTS AND PAIRWISE ENTANGLEMENT IN SYMMETRIC MULTIQUBIT SYSTEM

A. R. Usha Devi, M. S. Uma, R. Prabhu +1 more

Pairwise entanglement properties of a symmetric multi-qubit system are analyzed through a complete set of two-qubit local invariants. Collective features of entanglement, such as spin squeezing, are expressed in terms of invariants and a classification scheme for pairwise entanglement is proposed. The invariant criteria given here are shown to be related to the recently proposed (Phys. Rev. Lett.95, 120502 (2005)) generalized spin squeezing inequalities for pairwise entanglement in symmetric multi-qubit states.

Spin squeezing and pairwise entanglement for symmetric multiqubit states

Xiaoguang Wang, Barry C. Sanders

We show that spin squeezing implies pairwise entanglement for arbitrary symmetric multiqubit states. If the squeezing parameter is less than or equal to 1, we demonstrate a quantitative relation between the squeezing parameter and the concurrence for the even and odd states. We prove that the even states generated from the initial state with all qubits being spin down, via the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian, are spin squeezed if and only if they are pairwise entangled. For the states generated via the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian with an external transverse field for any number of qubits greater than 1 or via the two-axis countertwisting Hamiltonian for any even number of qubits, the numerical results suggest that such states are spin squeezed if and only if they are pairwise entangled.

Collective signatures of entanglement in symmetric N-qubit systems

A. R. Usha Devi, R. Prabhu, A. K. Rajagopal

A cogent theory of collective multipole-like quantum correlations in symmetric multiqubit states is presented by employing SO(3) irreducible tensor representation. An effective bipartite division of this system leads to a family of inequalities to detect entanglement, which involve averages of the spherical tensors constructed from the total angular momentum operators of the system. The generalized spin squeezing inequality for pairwise entanglement follows from dipole-like correlations. A selected set of examples illustrate these collective tests. Such tests are useful to detect entanglement in macroscopic atomic ensembles, where individual atoms are not accessible.

Spin Squeezing and Quantum Correlations

A. R. Usha Devi, Sudha

Recent years have witnessed revolutionary improvement in the production, manipulation, characterization and quantification of multiatom (multiqubit) states - because of their promising applications in high precision atomic clocks, atomic interferrometry, quantum metrology and quantum information protocols. In the characterization and quantification of non-classical atomic correlations, two concepts namely, spin squeezing and quantum entanglement emerge. While spin squeezing originates from the uncertainty relation between atomic collective angular momentum operators, entanglement is a peculiar phenomena arising due to superpositions in the multiparticle Hilbert space. Here, we outline different quantitative measures of spin squeezing and discuss the intrinsic relation of spin squeezing with quantum entanglement in multiqubit systems.

Non-local properties of a symmetric two-qubit system

A. R. Usha Devi, M. S. Uma, R. Prabhu +1 more

Non-local properties of symmetric two-qubit states are quantified in terms of a complete set of entanglement invariants. We prove that negative values of some of the invariants are signatures of quantum entanglement. This leads us to identify sufficient conditions for non-separability in terms of entanglement invariants. Non-local properties of two-qubit states extracted from (i) the Dicke state, (ii) a state generated by a one-axis twisting Hamiltonian, and (iii) a one-dimensional Ising chain with nearest neighbour interaction are analysed in terms of the invariants characterizing them.

Development of new tools to detect, characterize and quantify quantum entanglement in multipartite systems

Antoine Neven

Quantum entanglement is a key property of quantum information theory, that is at the heart of numerous promising applications in fields such as quantum cryptography, quantum computing or quantum sensing. In the past decades, the advent of such innovative technologies has reinforced the need for a better understanding of entanglement. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to this effort through the development of new tools targeting the characterization of several features of entanglement. Concerning the issue of entanglement detection, we present an optimization of the approach that exploits the concept of generalized concurrences to solve the separability problem for pure states. We then reformulate the separability question of mixed states into a matrix analysis problem, from which we obtain general separability criteria for multipartite states of ranks two and three. We also briefly discuss some properties of separable states. In particular, we characterize optimal separable decompositions of symmetric (i.e. permutation invariant) states of two and three qubits with maximal rank properties. Regarding the quantification of entanglement, we propose a function to quantify the entanglement of symmetric multiqubit states within classes of entangled states gathering states that are stochastically equivalent through local operations assisted with classical communication. This function establishes a link between the amount of entanglement of a symmetric state and the distribution of its Majorana points on the Bloch sphere. We finally investigate the robustness of entanglement with respect to particle loss and provide a full description of all multiqubit states that are fragile for the loss of one of their qubits. For symmetric states, the fragility for the loss of one qubit is shown to be related to a particular symmetry of the Majorana points.
