Melting at the absolute zero of temperature: Quantum phase transitions in condensed matter

Abstract

We dedicate this article to our father, Prof. Dr. Guenter Vojta, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. While colleagues appreciate him as an excellent scientist with widespread interests and an amazingly broad knowledge, we see in him the father, teacher, friend, and much more. Thanks to him, we grew up immersed in the fascinating world of physics from an early age. His example and encouragement have crucially influenced our own lives.

QUANTUM FEATURES OF HARMONIC OSCILLATORS: INVESTIGATING THE LIMITS OF QUANTUM MECHANICS

LUCA ABRAHAO PAIVA

Nothing is achieved alone.I am what and where I am because of all of those who crossed my path.Without all the good and the bad, I would not be here.I want to deeply thank all of those who joined me in this amazing experience.More specifically... To my mother who have always supported me in every decision I made, who let me walk on my own, but made me sure she was always there for what I needed. To my father, that always taught me the value of education and dedication. To my brother, to all the coffee and many gestures of love and appreciation.I hope I can inspire you, the same way you inspire me.À minha avó, que não somente me ensinou a ler, mas também com quem aprendi muito sobre amor, família e perseverança.To my friends who have been with me throughout all these years, sharing dreams, wins, loses but always there for each other.Specifically, those who started with me this journey in Physics, Rafael e Vitória, and are a fundamental part of my trajectory. Also, all my colleagues from the Quantum Adventures group, that quickly became a second family. To my friend and advisor, Thiago. It was out of pure chance I ended up in that interview and sent you an email. Now, two years later, I can see the difference it has made and how much you helped me through all of it, not only academically. It was a pleasure share these last two years. And hopefully, many to come. At last, I want to thank my beloved girlfriend Clara. There is no overstating the importance you have in my life.A great part of what I am, is due to you.And that part is certainly the best of me.Love you dearly.

Diffeomorphism groups and nonlinear quantum mechanics

Gerald A. Goldin

This talk is dedicated to my friend and collaborator, Prof. Dr. Heinz-Dietrich Doebner, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. I shall review some highlights of the approach we have taken in deriving and interpreting an interesting class of nonlinear time-evolution equations for quantum-mechanical wave functions, with few equations; more detail may be found in the references. Then I shall comment on the corresponding hydrodynamical description.

NEUTROSOPHIC LOGIC, WAVE MECHANICS, AND OTHER STORIES: SELECTED WORKS 2005-2008

Florentín Smarandache, Victor Christianto

There is beginning for anything; we used to hear that phrase. The same wisdom word applies to us too. What began in 2005 as a short email on some ideas related to interpretation of the Wave Mechanics results in a number of papers and books up to now. Some of these papers can be found in Progress in Physics or elsewhere. It is often recognized that when a mathematician meets a physics-inclined mind then the result is either a series of endless debates or publication. In our story, we prefer to publish rather than perish. Therefore, our purpose with this book is to present a selection of published papers in a compilation which enable the readers to find some coherent ideas which appear in those articles. For this reason, the ordering of the papers here is based on categories of ideas. While some of these articles have been published in book format elsewhere, we hope that reading this book will give the readers an impression of the progress of our thoughts. A few other papers are not yet published elsewhere, or being planned to publish in other journal. We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to plenty of colleagues, friends and relatives all around the world for sharing their ideas, insightful discussions etc. Special thanks to D. Rabounski, S. Crothers, L. Borissova for their great service in Progress in Physics journal. One of these authors (VC) would like to thank to Profs. A. Yefremov and M. Fil’chenkov for all hospitality extended to him in the Institute of Gravitation and Cosmology of PFUR, where this book is prepared. Discussions with Prof. V.V. Kassandrov, Prof. V. Ivashchuk, & Prof. Yu P. Rybakov are appreciated. Many thanks also to Dr. S. Trihandaru and others from UKSW, Central Java,Indonesia. Sincere thanks to good friends in PFUR, especially to D. Kermite, Y. Umniyati, Anastasia Golubtsova & Serguey– all other friends are of course worth mentioning here, but the margin of this book is quite limited to mention all of you. And to all other scientist colleagues, allow us to say: Full speed ahead! FS & VC, March 2009
