Entanglement of solitons in the Frenkel-Kontorova model

Abstract

We investigate entanglement of solitons in the continuum limit of the nonlinear Frenkel-Kontorova chain. We find that the entanglement of solitons manifests particlelike behavior as they are characterized by localization of entanglement. The von Neumann entropy of solitons mixes critical with noncritical behaviors. Inside the core of the soliton the logarithmic increase of the entropy is faster than the universal increase of a critical field, whereas outside the core the entropy decreases and saturates the constant value of the corresponding massive noncritical field. In addition, two solitons manifest long-range entanglement that decreases with the separation of the solitons more slowly than the universal decrease of the critical field. Interestingly, in the noncritical regime of the Frenkel-Kontorova model, entanglement can even increase with the separation of the solitons. We show that most of the entanglement of the so-called internal modes of the solitons is saturated by local degrees of freedom inside the core, and therefore we suggest using the internal modes as carriers of quantum information.

Critical and noncritical long-range entanglement in Klein-Gordon fields

S. Marcovitch, Alex Retzker, Martin Bodo Plenio +1 more

We investigate the entanglement between two spatially separated intervals in the vacuum state of a free one-dimensional Klein-Gordon field by means of explicit computations in the continuum limit of the linear harmonic chain. We demonstrate that the entanglement, which we quantify by the logarithmic negativity, is finite with no further need for renormalization. We find that in the critical regime, the quantum correlations are scale invariant as they depend only on the ratio of distance to length. They decay much faster than the classical correlations as in the critical limit long-range entanglement decays exponentially for separations larger than the size of the blocks, while classical correlations follow a power-law decay. With decreasing distance of the blocks, the entanglement diverges as a power law in the distance. The noncritical regime manifests richer behavior, as the entanglement depends both on the size of the blocks and on their separation. In correspondence with the von Neumann entropy also long-range entanglement distinguishes critical from noncritical systems.

Entanglement in noncritical inhomogeneous quantum chains

Nadir Samos Sáenz de Buruaga, Silvia N. Santalla, Javier Rodríguez-Laguna +1 more

We study an inhomogeneous critical Ising chain in a transverse field whose couplings decay exponentially from the center. In the strong inhomogeneity limit, we apply Fisher's renormalization group to show that the ground state is formed by concentric singlets similar to those of the rainbow state of the XX model. In the weak inhomogeneity limit, we map the model to a massless Majorana fermion living in a hyperbolic space-time, where, using conformal field theory techniques, we derive the entanglement entropy and show that it presents a linear scaling. We also study an inhomogeneous noncritical Ising model that for weak inhomogeneity is mapped to a massive Majorana fermion, while for strong inhomogeneity regime, it exhibits trivial and nontrivial topological phases and a separation between regions with high and low entanglement. We also present the entanglement Hamiltonian of the model.

Mode entanglement of electrons in the one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model

Xiaoguang Wang, Haibin Li, Bambi Hu

We study the mode entanglement in the one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model, and found that quantum entanglement is distinct before and after the transition by breaking of analyticity. We show that the more extended the electron is, the more entangled the corresponding state. Finally, a quantitative relation is given between the average square of the concurrence quantifying the degree of entanglement and the participation ratio characterizing the degree of localization.

Entanglement entropy between virtual and real excitations in quantum electrodynamics

Juan Sebastián Ardenghi

The aim of this work is to introduce the entanglement entropy of real and virtual excitations of fermion and photon fields. By rewriting the generating functional of quantum electrodynamics theory as an inner product between quantum operators, it is possible to obtain quantum density operators representing the propagation of real and virtual particles. These operators are partial traces, where the degrees of freedom traced out are unobserved excitations. Then the von Neumann definition of entropy can be applied to these quantum operators and in particular, for the partial traces taken over by the internal or external degrees of freedom. A universal behavior is obtained for the entanglement entropy for different quantum fields at zeroth order in the coupling constant. In order to obtain numerical results at different orders in the perturbation expansion, the Bloch–Nordsieck model is considered, where it is shown that for some particular values of the electric charge, the von Neumann entropy increases or decreases with respect to the noninteracting case.

Dynamics of quantum entanglement

Karol Życzkowski, Paweł Horodecki, Michał Horodecki +1 more

A model of discrete dynamics of entanglement of a bipartite quantum state is considered. It involves a global unitary dynamics of the system and periodic actions of local bistochastic or decaying channel. For initially pure states the decay of entanglement is accompanied by an increase of von Neumann entropy of the system. We observe and discuss revivals of entanglement due to unitary interaction of subsystems. For some mixed states having different marginal entropies of the subsystems we find an asymmetry in speed of entanglement decay. The entanglement of these states decreases faster, if the depolarizing channel acts on the ``classical'' subsystem, characterized by smaller marginal entropy.
