Fidelity Approach to the Disordered Quantum XY Model

Abstract

We study the random XY spin chain in a transverse field by analyzing the susceptibility of the ground state fidelity, numerically evaluated through a standard mapping of the model onto quasifree fermions. It is found that the fidelity susceptibility and its scaling properties provide useful information about the phase diagram. In particular it is possible to determine the Ising critical line and the Griffiths phase regions, in agreement with previous analytical and numerical results.

Scaling of the fidelity susceptibility in a disordered quantum spin chain

N. Tobias Jacobson, Silvano Garnerone, Stephan Haas +1 more

The phase diagram of a quantum $XY$ spin chain with Gaussian-distributed random anisotropies and transverse fields is investigated, with focus on the fidelity susceptibility, a recently introduced quantum information theoretical measure. Monitoring the finite-size scaling of the probability distribution of this quantity as well as its average and typical values, we detect a disorder-induced disappearance of criticality and the emergence of Griffiths phases in this model. It is found that the fidelity susceptibility is not self-averaging near the disorder-free quantum-critical lines. At the Ising critical point the fidelity susceptibility scales as a disorder-strength independent stretched exponential of the system size, in contrast with the quadratic scaling at the corresponding point in the disorder-free $XY$ chain. Along the line where the average anisotropy vanishes the fidelity susceptibility appears to scale extensively, whereas in the disorder-free case this point is quantum critical with quadratic finite-size scaling.

Critical properties and phase diagram of the quantum anisotropic XY spin chain in a random magnetic field: A density-matrix renormalization-group analysis

Aušrius Juozapavičius, Laura Urba, S. Caprara +1 more

The spin-1/2 quantum anisotropic XY spin chain in a transverse random magnetic field parallel to the z axis is numerically studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization group. The dependence of the spontaneous magnetization and the energy gap on both the strength of the random magnetic field and the factor of anisotropy is determined. The critical line for the order-disorder phase transition is obtained and the resulting phase diagram is drawn. Our results are compatible with the fact that models with different factors of anisotropy fall within the same universality class as the quantum Ising model in a transverse random field.

Quantum fidelity approach to the ground-state properties of the one-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model in a transverse field

O. F. de Alcantara Bonfim, B. Boechat, J. Florencio

In this work we analyze the ground-state properties of the s=1/2 one-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model in a transverse field using the quantum fidelity approach. We numerically determined the fidelity susceptibility as a function of the transverse field B_{x} and the strength of the next-nearest-neighbor interaction J_{2}, for systems of up to 24 spins. We also examine the ground-state vector with respect to the spatial ordering of the spins. The ground-state phase diagram shows ferromagnetic, floating, and 〈2,2〉 phases, and we predict an infinite number of modulated phases in the thermodynamic limit (L→∞). Paramagnetism only occurs for larger magnetic fields. The transition lines separating the modulated phases seem to be of second order, whereas the line between the floating and the 〈2,2〉 phases is possibly of first order.

Quantum critical scaling of fidelity susceptibility

A. Fabricio Albuquerque, Fabien Alet, Clément Sire +1 more

The behavior of the ground-state fidelity susceptibility in the vicinity of a quantum critical point is investigated. We derive scaling relations describing its singular behavior in the quantum critical regime. Unlike in previous studies, these relations are solely expressed in terms of conventional critical exponents. We also describe in detail a quantum Monte Carlo scheme that allows for the evaluation of the fidelity susceptibility for a large class of many-body systems and apply it in the study of the quantum phase transition for the transverse-field Ising model on the square lattice. Finite-size analysis applied to the so-obtained numerical results confirms the validity of our scaling relations. Furthermore, we analyze the properties of a closely related quantity, the ground-state energy's second derivative, which can be numerically evaluated in a particularly efficient way. The usefulness of both quantities as alternative indicators of quantum criticality is examined.

Numerical study of the random transverse-field Ising spin chain

A. P. Young, Heiko Rieger

We study numerically the critical region and the disordered phase of the random transverse-field Ising chain. By using a mapping of Lieb, Schultz, and Mattis to noninteracting fermions, we can obtain a numerically exact solution for rather large system sizes, L\ensuremath{\le}128. Our results confirm the striking predictions of earlier analytical work and, in addition, give results for some probability distributions and scaling functions. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
