Abstract

We consider Linear Programming (LP) decoding of a fixed Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) code over the Binary Symmetric Channel (BSC). The LP decoder fails when it outputs a pseudo-codeword which is not a codeword. We design an efficient algorithm termed the Instanton Search Algorithm (ISA) which, given a random input, generates a set of flips called the BSC-instanton. We prove that: (a) the LP decoder fails for any set of flips with support vector including an instanton; (b) for any input, the algorithm outputs an instanton in the number of steps upper-bounded by twice the number of flips in the input. Repeated sufficient number of times, the ISA outcomes the number of unique instantons of different sizes.

We consider linear programming (LP) decoding of a fixed low-density parity-check (LDPC) code over the binary symmetric channel (BSC). The LP decoder fails when it outputs a pseudo-codeword which is not a codeword. We obtain the number of unique instantons of different sizes by running the ISA sufficient number of times. We then use the instanton statistics to predict the performance of the LP decoding over the BSC in the error floor region. We also propose an efficient semi-analytical method to predict the performance of LP decoding over a large range of transition probabilities of the BSC.

An Efficient Instanton Search Algorithm for LP Decoding of LDPC Codes Over the BSC

Shashi Kiran Chilappagari, Michael Chertkov, Bane V. Vasic

We consider linear programming (LP) decoding of a fixed low-density parity-check (LDPC) code over the binary symmetric channel (BSC). The LP decoder fails when it outputs a pseudo-codeword which is not equal to the transmitted codeword. We design an efficient algorithm termed the Instanton Search Algorithm (ISA) which generates an error vector called the BSC-instanton. We prove that: (a) the LP decoder fails for any error pattern with support that is a superset of the support of an instanton; (b) for any input, the ISA outputs an instanton in the number of steps upper-bounded by twice the number of errors in the input error vector. We then find the number of unique instantons of different sizes for a given LDPC code by running the ISA sufficient number of times.

Finding Small Fundamental Instantons of LDPC Codes by Path Extension

Junjun Guo, Jianjun Mu, Xiaopeng Jiao +1 more

In this letter, we present a new scheme to find small fundamental instantons (SFIs) of regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes for the linear programming (LP) decoding over the binary symmetric channel (BSC). Based on the fact that each instanton-induced graph (IIG) contains at least one short cycle, we determine potential instantons by constructing possible IIGs which contain short cycles and additional paths connected to the cycles. Then we identify actual instantons from potential ones under the LP decoding. Simulation results on some typical LDPC codes show that our scheme is effective, and more instantons can be obtained by the proposed scheme when compared with the existing instanton search method.

Searching for low weight pseudo-codewords

Michael Chertkov, Mikhail Stepanov

Belief propagation (BP) and linear programming (LP) decodings of low density parity check (LDPC) codes are discussed. We summarize results of instanton/pseudo-codeword approach developed for analysis of the error-floor domain of the codes. Instantons are special, code and decoding specific, configurations of the channel noise contributing most to the Frame-Error-Rate (FER). Instantons are decoded into pseudo- codewords. Instanton/pseudo-codeword with the lowest weight describes the largest Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) asymptotic of FER, while the whole spectra of the low weight instantons is descriptive of the FER vs SNR profile in the extended error-floor domain. First, we describe a general optimization method that allows to find the instantons for any coding/decoding. Second, we introduce LP-specific pseudo-codeword search algorithm that allows efficient calculations of the pseudo-codeword spectra. Finally, we discuss results of combined BP/LP error-floor exploration experiments for two model codes.

Suppressing Fractional Pseudocodewords by Eliminating Small Instantons

Junjun Guo, Jianjun Mu, Xiaopeng Jiao +1 more

In this letter, a new method is presented to suppress fractional pseudocodewords by eliminating small instantons of irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes under the linear programming (LP) decoding over the binary symmetric channel (BSC). By appending several new rows found by the integer linear programming formulation to the original parity-check matrix, the optimal distribution spectrum of BSC-instantons in the modified code is obtained. Simulation results show that the proposed method can improve the fractional distance of parity-check matrices and considerably enhance the error-correcting performance of irregular LDPC codes under the LP decoding at the cost of a slightly loss of the original code rate.
