Abstract

We consider a class of ground states for quantum spin chains on an integer lattice. First we show that presence of the spectral gap between the ground state energy and the rest of spectrum implies the split property of certain subsystems. As a corollary, we show that gapless excitation exists for spinless Fermion if the pure gauge invariant ground state is non-trivial and translationally invariant.

Spectral gap, and split property in quantum spin chains

Taku Matsui

In this article, we consider a class of ground states with spectral gap for quantum spin chains on an integer lattice and we prove that the factorization lemma of Hastings [“Topology and phases in fermionic systems,” J. Stat. Mech.: Theory Exp. 2008, L01001] implies split property (weak statistical independence) of left and right semi-infinite subsystems.

SU(2) symmetry breaking in quantum spin chain

Anilesh Mohari

Though our primary motivation is to study properties of the ground states of a Hamiltonian for quantum spin chain, in this exposition we propose a general methodology valid for a translation invariant state. To that end we study the associated Popescu systems [Po,BJKW] representing the translation invariant state and find an useful criteria for the state to be pure. As a simple consequence of this criteria we prove a surprising result which says that there exists no translation invariant lattice symmetric and SU(2)-gauge invariant pure state for half-odd integer spin chain. As a consequence of this result we prove that ground state for half-odd integer spin chain is not unique for any SU(2)-gauge invariant translation and lattice symmetric Hamiltonian. In other words this exhibits that there is a phase transition in the ground state for anti-ferromagnetic isotropic Heisenberg half-odd integer spin chain. 2 It has been known in physics literature that the spin 1

Detailed balance and split property in quantum spin chain

Anilesh Mohari

In this exposition we investigate further the general methodology proposed in [Mo2] to study properties of the ground states of a translation invariant Hamiltonian for one lattice dimensional quantum spin chain A = ⊗ ZMd, where Md is the matrix of d × d complex matrices. We introduce a notion of quantum detailed balance [Mo1] for a translation invariant state on A and prove that such a pure state is uniformly mixing [BR,Ma2] if and only if the lattice space correlation functions decay exponentially. Furthermore we also prove that a pure lattice symmetric, translation and SU(2) gauge invariant state give rise to a canonical Popescu systems acting on a finite dimensional Hilbert space and thus the lattice space correlation functions of the pure state decay exponentially. As a consequence of these results we conclude that if the ground states for an integer spin SU(2) invariant (2s + 1 = d) detailed balanced Hamiltonian is unique then the state is split. In particular if the ground state for integer

Inversion symmetry breaking and criticality in free fermionic lattices

Zoltán Kádár

We describe the connection between inversion symmetry breaking and criticality in free fermionic lattice models. It is shown that for translation-invariant spinless fermions, the breaking of this symmetry in the ground state implies criticality, i.e., the existence of long-range correlations and the vanishing of the spectral gap; while for models with spin, only the asymmetry of the spin-averaged covariance matrix implies a similar conclusion. Our results are proved by introducing invariants under global translation-invariant free fermion quenches. Using this result, we identify a set of models where the generalized Hartree-Fock approximation must break down.

Spectral gap and exponential decay of correlations

Matthew B. Hastings, Tohru Koma

We study the relation between the spectral gap above the ground state and the decay of the correlations in the ground state in quantum spin and fermion systems with short-range interactions on a wide class of lattices. We prove that, if two observables anticommute with each other at large distance, then the nonvanishing spectral gap implies exponential decay of the corresponding correlation. When two observables commute with each other at large distance, the connected correlation function decays exponentially under the gap assumption. If the observables behave as a vector under the U(1) rotation of a global symmetry of the system, we use previous results on the large distance decay of the correlation function to show the stronger statement that the correlation function itself, rather than just the connected correlation function, decays exponentially under the gap assumption on a lattice with a certain self-similarity in (fractal) dimensions D < 2. In particular, if the system is translationally invariant in one of the spatial directions, then this self-similarity condition is automatically satisfied. We also treat systems with long-range, power-law decaying interactions. Spectral Gap and Exponential Decay of Correlations 2 1

Stability of One-Dimensional Gapped Quantum Spin Systems

Samuel Herring

An important class of models studied in quantum statistical mechanics consists of frustration-free interactions whose Hamiltonians exhibit a gap in the spectrum above their ground state energies. This paper discusses recent techniques which dramatically extend the class of models to which stability applies when the perturbations exhibit stretched exponential decay at long distances. We consider a class of initial models satisfying an assumption that prevents splitting of the ground state space. This assumption on the structure on the ground state space is referred to as local topological quantum order. A key tool in our analysis is the quasi-local unitary spectral flow automorphism which allows us to decompose the perturbed Hamiltonian into a perturbation model satisfying a relative form bound. We will present a result for the stability of frustration-free, one-dimensional models of this type in the form of an estimate uniform in the system size. We also present additional conditions ensuring the existence of a pure perturbed ground state whose GNS Hamiltonian remains gapped. As an application, we evaluate the stability of the Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain. Our work shows a new result on the stability of the XXZ model for perturbations respecting a local gauge symmetry and the stability above the translation invariant ground states in the thermodynamic limit. We also discuss challenges to additional conjectured stability results for the XXZ model.
