Abstract

The creation and propagation of sound waves in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) are investigated and a new method of wave generation in binary BEC mixtures is proposed. The method is based on a fast change of the inter-species interaction constant and is illustrated for two experimental settings: a drop-like condensate immersed into a second large repulsive condensate, and a binary mixture of two homogeneous repulsive BEC's. A mathematical model based on the linearized coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations is developed and explicit formulae for the space and time dependence of sound waves are provided. Comparison of the analytical and numerical results shows excellent agreement, confirming the validity of the proposed approach.

Modulation Instability in Two Component Bose-Einstein Condensate with Dissipation

A. P. Ivashin, Elena Marinenko

In this paper, we consider the dynamic evolution of a binary mixture of a Bose-Einstein condensate taking into account the presence of dissipation inside the components. Using the introduction of the dissipative function, the modified Gross-Pitaevskii equations are obtained. These equations, in contrast to the usual Gross-Pitaevskii equations for two-component condensate, allow us to take into account the dissipation in the system. The influence of dissipative processes on the development of modulation instability in a spatially homogeneous two-component Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated. In contrast to the one-component Bose-Einstein condensate, in which modulation instability arises only when there are forces of attraction between atoms, in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate nonlinear dynamics, leading to modulation instability is more complex. It essentially depends on the signs and values of the constant interaction of the components, which leads to a greater variety of possible scenarios for the development of modulation instability. The paper considers two cases. The first case is when repulsive forces act inside the components, and the second is when repulsive forces act in the first component, and in the second one - attractive forces. At the same time, the situation when there is a repulsion in the first component, and attraction between the particles in the second component differs significantly from the case of only positive interaction inside the components. The relations between the interaction constants that determine the development of the modulation instability turn out to be different. Given the relations between the interaction constants, taking into account dissipation processes, the occurrence of modulation instability in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates was studied, the maximum growth rate of oscillations was found, and the limits of the existence of modulation instability in the space of wave numbers were found. It is shown that the small effect of dissipation on the modulation instability in the Bose – Einstein condensate is explained not only by the smallness of the friction forces. For wave vectors corresponding to a mode with a maximum increment, the contribution of dissipation in the linear approximation with respect to the dissipative parameter is strictly zero. Thus, the condition for the development of the most rapidly growing mode of oscillations, which determines the beginning of the modulation instability, remains the same as in the nondissipative case.

Manifestation of Superfluidity in Atom-Number-Imbalanced Two-Component Bose–Einstein Condensates

S. M. Al-Marzoug, Bakhtiyor B. Baizakov, Usama Al Khawaja +1 more

Superfluid and dissipative regimes in the dynamics of a two-component quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) with unequal atom numbers in the two components have been explored. The system supports localized waves of the symbiotic type owing to the same-species repulsion and cross-species attraction. The minority BEC component moves through the majority component and creates excitations. To quantify the emerging excitations, we introduce a time-dependent function called disturbance. Through numerical simulations of the coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations with periodic boundary conditions, we have identified a critical velocity of the localized wave, above which a transition from the superfluid to dissipative regime occurs, as evidenced by a sharp increase in the disturbance function. The factors responsible for the discrepancy between the actual critical velocity and the speed of sound, expected from theoretical arguments, have been discussed.

Nonlinear waves of polarization in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

A. M. Kamchatnov, Yaroslav V. Kartashov, Pierre-Élie Larré +1 more

Waves with different symmetries exist in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) whose dynamics is described by a system of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations. A first type of waves corresponds to excitations for which the motion of both components is locally in phase. In the second type of waves the two components have a counter-phase local motion. In the case of different values of inter- and intra-component interaction constants, the long wave-length behavior of these two modes corresponds to two types of sound with different velocities. In the limit of weak nonlinearity and small dispersion the first mode is described by the well-known Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. We show that in the same limit the second mode can be described by the Gardner (modified KdV) equation, if the intra-component interaction constants have close enough values. This leads to a rich phenomenology of nonlinear excitations (solitons, kinks, algebraic solitons, breathers) which does not exist in the KdV description.

Simple waves in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

Sergey K. Ivanov, A. M. Kamchatnov

We study the dynamics of so-called simple waves in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate. The evolution of the condensate is described by Gross-Pitaevskii equations which can be reduced for these simple wave solutions to a system of ordinary differential equations which coincide with those derived by Ovsyannikov for the two-layer fluid dynamics. We solve the Ovsyannikov system for two typical situations of large and small difference between interspecies and intraspecies nonlinear interaction constants. Our analytic results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

Wave patterns generated by a supersonic moving body in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate

Yu. G. Gladush, A. M. Kamchatnov, Zhiwei Shi +3 more

Generation of wave structures by a two-dimensional (2D) object (laser beam) moving in a 2D two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with a velocity greater than the two sound velocities of the mixture is studied by means of analytical methods and systematic simulations of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The wave pattern features three regions separated by two Mach cones. Two branches of linear patterns similar to the so-called ``ship waves'' are located outside the corresponding Mach cones, and oblique dark solitons are found inside the wider cone. An analytical theory is developed for the linear patterns. A particular dark-soliton solution is also obtained, its stability is investigated, and two unstable modes of transverse perturbations are identified. It is shown that for a sufficiently large flow velocity, this instability has a convective character in the reference frame attached to the moving body, which makes the dark soliton effectively stable. The analytical findings are corroborated by numerical simulations.
