Abstract

We have considered the half-filled disordered attractive Hubbard model on a square lattice, in which the on-site attraction is switched off on a fraction $f$ of sites, while keeping a finite $U$ on the remaining ones. Through quantum Monte Carlo simulations for several values of $f$ and $U$ and for system sizes ranging from $8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}8$ to $16\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}16$, we have calculated the configurational averages of the equal-time pair structure factor ${P}_{s}$ and, for a more restricted set of variables, the helicity modulus ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{s}$, as functions of temperature. Two finite-size scaling Ans\"atze for ${P}_{s}$ have been used: one for zero temperature and the other for finite temperatures. We have found that the system sustains superconductivity in the ground state up to a critical impurity concentration ${f}_{c}$, which increases with $U$, at least up to $U=4$ (in units of the hopping energy). Also, the normalized zero-temperature gap as a function of $f$ shows a maximum near $f\ensuremath{\sim}0.07$ for $2\ensuremath{\lesssim}U\ensuremath{\lesssim}6$. Analyses of the helicity modulus and of the pair structure factor led to the determination of the critical temperature as a function of $f$ for $U=3$, 4, and 6: they also show maxima near $f\ensuremath{\sim}0.07$, with the highest ${T}_{c}$ increasing with $U$ in this range. We argue that, overall, the observed behavior results from both the breakdown of charge-density-wave-superconductivity degeneracy and the fact that free sites tend to ``push'' electrons toward attractive sites; the latter effect being more drastic at weak couplings.

Critical temperature for the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

Thereza Paiva, Raimundo R. dos Santos, Richard T. Scalettar +1 more

The critical temperature for the attractive Hubbard model on a square lattice is determined from the analysis of two independent quantities, the helicity modulus ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{s}$ and the pairing correlation function ${P}_{s}.$ These quantities have been calculated through quantum Monte Carlo simulations for lattices up to $18\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}18,$ and for several densities, in the intermediate-coupling regime. Imposing the universal-jump condition for an accurately calculated ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{s},$ together with thorough finite-size scaling analyses (in the spirit of the phenomenological renormalization group) of ${P}_{s},$ suggests that ${T}_{c}$ is considerably higher than hitherto assumed.

Optimal Superconducting Critical Temperature in the Two-Dimensional Attractive Hubbard Model

P. J. H. Denteneer, Guozhong An, J. M. J. van Leeuwen

The critical temperature for superconductivity for the two-dimensional attractive (negative- U ) Hubbard model on a square lattice is calculated as a function of the strength of the interaction and of the density of electrons. The critical temperature is obtained by calculating the helicity modulus associated with a wavelike distortion of the gap parameter in the BCS approximation as a function of temperature and subsequent comparison with the Kosterlitz-Thouless relation between critical temperature and helicity modulus. The adequacy of the approximations is discussed and a comparison with recent Monte Carlo calculations is made.

Superconductivity and charge order of confined Fermi systems

Elias Assmann, Simone Chiesa, G. G. Batrouni +2 more

The low-temperature properties of the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model are strongly influenced by the fermion density. Away from half-filling, there is a finite-temperature transition to a phase with $s$-wave pairing order. However, ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ is suppressed to zero at half-filling, where long-range charge-density-wave order also appears, degenerate with superconductivity. This paper presents determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the attractive Hubbard model in the presence of a confining potential ${V}_{\mathrm{trap}}$ which makes the fermion density $\ensuremath{\rho}$ inhomogeneous across the lattice. Pair correlations are shown to be large at low temperatures in regions of the trapped system with incommensurate filling, and to exhibit a minimum as the local density $\ensuremath{\rho}(\mathbit{i})$ passes through one fermion per site. In this ring of $\ensuremath{\rho}(\mathbit{i})=1$, charge order is enhanced. A comparison is made between treating ${V}_{\mathrm{trap}}$ within the local-density approximation (LDA) and in an ab initio manner. It is argued that certain sharp features of the LDA result at integer filling do not survive the proximity of doped sites. The critical temperature of confined systems of fixed characteristic density is estimated.

Superconductivity from repulsion: Variational results for the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the limit of weak interaction

D. Baeriswyl

The two-dimensional Hubbard model is studied for small values of the interaction strength ($U$ of the order of the hopping amplitude $t$), using a variational ansatz well suited for this regime. The wave function, a refined Gutzwiller ansatz, has a BCS mean-field state with $d$-wave symmetry as its reference state. Superconducting order is found for densities $n<1$ (but not for $n=1$). This resolves a discrepancy between results obtained with the functional renormalization group, which do predict superconducting order for small values of $U$, and numerical simulations, which did not find superconductivity for $U\ensuremath{\lesssim}4t$. Both the gap parameter and the order parameter have a domelike shape as a function of $n$ with a maximum for $n\ensuremath{\approx}0.8$. Expectation values for the energy, the particle number, and the superconducting order parameter are calculated using a linked-cluster expansion up to second order in $U$. In this way large systems (millions of sites) can be readily treated and well converged results are obtained. A big size is indeed required to see that the gap becomes very small at half filling and probably tends to zero in the thermodynamic limit, whereas away from half filling a finite asymptotic limit is reached. For a lattice of a given size the order parameter becomes finite only above a minimal coupling strength ${U}_{c}$. This threshold value decreases steadily with increasing system size, which indicates that superconductivity exists for arbitrarily small $U$ for an infinite system. For moderately large systems the size dependence is quite irregular, due to variations in level spacings at the Fermi energy. The fluctuations die out if the gap parameter spans several level spacings.

s -wave superconductivity phase diagram in the inhomogeneous two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

Karan Aryanpour, Thereza Paiva, Warren E. Pickett +1 more

We study $s$-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional square-lattice attractive Hubbard Hamiltonian for various inhomogeneous patterns of interacting sites. Using the Bogoliubov--de Gennes mean-field approximation, we obtain the phase diagram for inhomogeneous patterns in which the on-site attractive interaction ${U}_{i}$ between the electrons takes on two values ${U}_{i}=0$ and $\ensuremath{-}U∕(1\ensuremath{-}f)$ (with $f$ the concentration of noninteracting sites) as a function of average electron occupation per site, $n$, and study the evolution of the phase diagram as $f$ varies. In certain regions of the phase diagram, inhomogeneity results in a larger zero-temperature average pairing amplitude (order parameter) and also a higher superconducting critical temperature ${T}_{c}$, relative to a uniform system with the same mean interaction strength (${U}_{i}=\ensuremath{-}U$ on all sites). These effects are observed for stripes, checkerboard, and even random patterns of the attractive centers, suggesting that the pattern of inhomogeneity is unimportant. The phase diagrams also include regions where superconductivity is obliterated due to the formation of various charge-ordered phases. The enhancement of ${T}_{c}$ due to inhomogeneity is robust as long as the electron doping per site, $n$, is less than twice the fraction of interacting sites $[2(1\ensuremath{-}f)]$ regardless of the pattern. We also show that for certain inhomogeneous patterns, when $n=2(1\ensuremath{-}f)$, increasing temperature can work against the stability of existing charge-ordered phases for large $f$ and, as a result, enhance ${T}_{c}$.

Spin gap and superconductivity in the three-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

Raimundo R. dos Santos

We study the phase diagram for the attractive (i.e., negative-U) Hubbard model on a simple-cubic lattice, through Monte Carlo simulations. We obtain the critical temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ for superconductivity from a finite-size scaling analysis of the data for the pairing correlations. For fixed on-site attraction U, ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ displays a maximum near the filling factor 0.9, roughly independent of U. For fixed filling we estimate the crossover temperature ${\mathit{T}}^{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$(U), separating the normal states: metallic and spin gap. There is also a critical value ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{p}}$ for pair formation, the magnitude of which seems to be independent of doping. The relevance of these results to the high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ oxides is discussed.
