Crystallization of trions in SU(3) cold-atom gases trapped in optical lattices

Abstract

Cold fermionic atoms with three different hyperfine states confined in optical lattices show pronounced atomic density waves (ADWs). These ADWs are pinned due to the confining potential that traps the atoms in the optical lattice and can be considered a crystal phase of strongly bound trions (CPT). We show that the crystalline phase is incompressible and robust against anisotropic interactions. We also show that it is generic in the presence of the trap due to its incompressibility. Numeric density matrix renormalization group calculations show evidence of a crossover between a trionic superfluid and the CPT state as a function of the strength of the interaction and as a function of the anisotropy of the interaction.

Color-charge separation in trapped SU( 3 ) fermionic atoms

Tobias Ulbricht, Rafael A. Molina, Ronny Thomale +1 more

Cold fermionic atoms with three different hyperfine states with SU($3$) symmetry confined in one-dimensional optical lattices show color-charge separation, generalizing the conventional spin-charge separation for interacting SU($2$) fermions in one dimension. Through time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group simulations, we explore the features of this phenomenon for a generalized SU($3$) Hubbard Hamiltonian. In our numerical simulations of finite-size systems, we observe different velocities of the charge and color degrees of freedom when a Gaussian wave packet or a charge (color) density response to a local perturbation is evolved. The differences between attractive and repulsive interactions are explored and we note that neither a small anisotropy of the interaction, breaking the SU($3$) symmetry, nor the filling impedes the basic observation of these effects.

Three-component Fermi gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice

P. Azaria, Sylvain Capponi, P. Lecheminant

We investigate the effect of the anisotropy between the $s$-wave scattering lengths of a three-component atomic Fermi gas loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice. We find four different phases which support trionic instabilities made of bound states of three fermions. These phases distinguish themselves by the relative phases between the $2{k}_{F}$ atomic density wave fluctuations of the three species. At small enough densities and strong anisotropies we give further evidences for a decoupling and the stabilization of more conventional BCS phases. Finally, our results are discussed in light of a recent experiment on $^{6}\text{L}\text{i}$ atoms.

Finite-temperature properties of attractive three-component fermionic atoms in optical lattices

Kensuke Inaba, Sei-ichiro Suga

We investigate the finite-temperature properties of attractive three-component (colors) fermionic atoms in optical lattices using a self-energy functional approach. As the strength of the attractive interaction increases in the low-temperature region, we observe a second-order transition from a Fermi liquid to a color superfluid (CSF), where atoms from two of the three colors form Cooper pairs. In the strong attractive region, we observe a first-order transition from a CSF to a trionic state, where three atoms with different colors form singlet bound states. A crossover between a Fermi liquid and a trionic state is observed in the high-temperature region. We present a phase diagram covering zero to finite temperatures. We demonstrate that the CSF transition temperature is enhanced by the anisotropy of the attractive interaction.

Monte Carlo study of fermionic trions in a square lattice with harmonic confinement

Steffen Backes, Irakli Titvinidze, A. Privitera +1 more

We investigate the strong-coupling limit of a three-component Fermi mixture in an optical lattice with attractive interactions. In this limit bound states (trions) of the three components are formed. We study the effective Hamiltonian for these composite fermions and show that it is asymptotically equivalent at the leading order to an antiferromagnetic Ising model. By using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the spatial arrangement of the trions in this regime and the formation of a trionic density wave, both in a homogeneous lattice and in the presence of an additional harmonic confinement. Depending on the strength of the confinement and on the temperature, we found several scenarios for the trionic distribution, including the coexistence of disordered trions with a density wave and band insulator phases. Our results show that, due to a proximity effect, staggered density modulations are induced in regions of the trap where they would not otherwise be present according to the local density approximation.

Superfluidity of p -wave and s -wave atomic Fermi gases in optical lattices

M. Iskin, C. A. R. Sá de Melo

We consider $p$-wave pairing of single hyperfine state and $s$-wave pairing of two hyperfine states ultracold atomic gases trapped in quasi-two-dimensional optical lattices. First, we analyze superfluid properties of $p$-wave and $s$-wave symmetries in the strictly weak coupling BCS regime where we discuss the order parameter, chemical potential, critical temperature, atomic compressibility, and superfluid density as a function of filling factor for tetragonal and orthorhombic optical lattices. Second, we analyze superfluid properties of $p$-wave and $s$-wave superfluids in the evolution from the BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation regimes at low temperatures $(T\ensuremath{\approx}0)$, where we discuss the changes in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum, chemical potential, atomic compressibility, Cooper pair size, and momentum distribution as a function of filling factor and interaction strength for tetragonal and orthorhombic optical lattices.

Color superfluidity and trionic state of three-component lattice fermionic atoms

Shin-ya Miyatake, Kensuke Inaba, Sei-ichiro Suga

We investigate three-component (colors) fermionic atoms with anisotropic attractive interactions in optical lattices at half filling using the dynamical mean field theory. In the weakly interacting region the color superfluid (CSF) state emerges, where atoms with two of three colors form the Cooper pairs. As the interaction is increased, a first-order quantum phase transition to the trionic state occurs, where singlet bound states of three different color atoms are formed. We show that the trionic state survives up to a fairly large anisotropic region. The phase diagram for the CSF and trionic states is obtained.

Cold fermionic atoms with three different hyperfine states with SU(333) symmetry confined in one-dimensional optical lattices show color-charge separation, generalizing the conventional spin-charge separation for interacting SU(222) fermions in one dimension.
