Abstract

We demonstrate theoretically the spontaneous formation of a stochastic polarization in exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensates in planar microcavities under pulsed excitation. Below the threshold pumping intensity (dependent on the polariton lifetime), the average polarization degree is close to zero, while above threshold the condensate acquires a polarization described by a (pseudospin) vector with random orientation, in general. It is shown that the polariton-polariton interaction leads to suppression of the linear polarization degree of the condensate due to the self-induced Larmor precession of the pseudospin. We establish the link between the second-order coherence of the polariton condensate and the distribution function of its polarization. We examine also the mechanisms of polarization dephasing and relaxation.

Spin noise and anti-bunching of the spin components of Bose-Einstein condensates of exciton-polaritons [Invited]

Ziqiu Shao, Alexey Vitalievich Kavokin

We study theoretically the correlation properties of exciton-polaritons in planar microcavities under pulsed excitation. In particular, we analyze the quantum statistics of two pseudo-spin components of an exciton-polariton condensate in the course of its formation. Below the bosonic condensation threshold, the statistics of two components correspond to a chaotic thermal state, while above the threshold, the coherence is built up, and the photons emitted by different spin components of the condensate become anticorrelated. This spin antibunching effect can be evidenced by spin-resolved Hanbury-Brown and Twiss spectroscopy of polariton lasers.

Spontaneous condensation of exciton polaritons in the single-shot regime

Eliezer Estrecho, Tingge Gao, Nataliya Bobrovska +9 more

Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity is a macroscopically populated coherent quantum state subject to concurrent pumping and decay. Debates about the fundamental nature of the condensed phase in this open quantum system still persist. Here, we gain a new insight into the spontaneous condensation process by imaging long-lifetime exciton polaritons in a high-quality inorganic microcavity in the single-shot optical excitation regime, without averaging over multiple condensate realisations. In this highly non-stationary regime, a condensate is strongly influenced by the `hot' incoherent reservoir, and reservoir depletion is critical for the transition to the ground energy and momentum state. Condensates formed by more photonic exciton polaritons exhibit dramatic reservoir-induced density filamentation and shot-to-shot fluctuations. In contrast, condensates of more excitonic quasiparticles display smooth density and are second-order coherent. Our observations show that the single-shot measurements offer a unique opportunity to study formation of macroscopic phase coherence during a quantum phase transition in a solid state system.

Temporally resolved second-order photon correlations of exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate formation

Albert F. Adiyatullin, Mitchell D. Anderson, Pierre V. Busi +4 more

Second-order time correlation measurements with a temporal resolution better than 3 ps were performed on a CdTe microcavity where spontaneous Bose-Einstein condensation is observed. After the laser pulse, the nonresonantly excited thermal polariton population relaxes into a coherent polariton condensate. Photon statistics of the light emitted by the microcavity evidences a clear phase transition from the thermal state to a coherent state, which occurs within 3.2 ps after the onset of stimulated scattering. Following this very fast transition, we show that the emission possesses a very high coherence that persists for more than 100 ps after the build-up of the condensate.

Condensation of polaritons through optical confinement: increased coherence and reduced threshold

A. Askitopopulos, Hamid Ohadi, Z. Hatzopoulos +3 more

We report on a fully optically confined exciton-polariton condensate, spatially separated from the pump induced excitonic reservoir and analyze its formation process. The optically trapped condensate exhibits higher coherence features and an order of magnitude lower excitation density threshold with respect to previous excitation schemes as a result of the reduction of dephasing and depletion mechanisms associated with the interaction with the reservoir.

Build up and pinning of linear polarization in the Bose condensates of exciton polaritons

Jacek Kasprzak, R. André, Le Si Dang +5 more

The linear polarization degree of the photoluminescence from a nonresonantly pumped CdTe microcavity exhibits a dramatic increase from about 0 to more than 85% once the threshold of stimulated scattering of the exciton polaritons toward the Bose-Einstein condensate is passed. The linear polarization direction is pinned to one of the crystallographic axes of the cavity. These effects are well accounted for within a model of localized condensate of interacting bosons.

Coherence Expansion and Polariton Condensate Formation in a Semiconductor Microcavity

V. V. Belykh, Nikolai N. Sibeldin, V. D. Kulakovskiĭ +6 more

The dynamics of the expansion of the first order spatial coherence g(1) for a polariton system in a high-Q GaAs microcavity was investigated on the basis of Young's double slit experiment under 3 ps pulse excitation at the conditions of polariton Bose-Einstein condensation. It was found that in the process of condensate formation the coherence expands with a constant velocity of about 10(8) cm/s. The measured coherence is smaller than that in a thermal equilibrium system during the growth of condensate density and well exceeds it at the end of condensate decay. The onset of spatial coherence is governed by polariton relaxation while condensate amplitude and phase fluctuations are not suppressed.
