Abstract

We investigate the connection between energy level crossings in integrable systems and their integrability, i.e. the existence of a set of non-trivial integrals of motion. In particular, we consider a general quantum Hamiltonian linear in the coupling u , H ( u ) = T + uV , and require that it has the maximum possible number of nontrivial commuting partners also linear in u . We demonstrate how this commutation requirement alone leads to: (1) an exact solution for the energy spectrum and (2) level crossings, which are always present in these Hamiltonians in violation of the Wigner–von Neumann non-crossing rule. Moreover, we construct these Hamiltonians explicitly by resolving the above commutation requirement and show their equivalence to a sector of Gaudin magnets (central spin Hamiltonians). In contrast, fewer than the maximum number of conservation laws does not guarantee level crossings.

Towards a theory of quantum integrability in finite size systems

Haile Owusu

We study general quantum integrable Hamiltonians linear in a coupling constant and represented by finite NxN real symmetric matrices. The restriction on the coupling dependence leads to a natural notion of nontrivial integrals of motion and classification of integrable families into Types according to the number of such integrals. A Type M family in our definition is formed by N-M nontrivial mutually commuting operators linear in the coupling. Working from this definition alone, we parameterize Type M operators, i.e. resolve the commutation relations, and obtain an exact solution for their eigenvalues and eigenvectors. We show that our parameterization covers all Type 1, 2, and 3 integrable models and discuss the extent to which it is complete for other types. We also present robust numerical observation on the number of energy level crossings in Type M integrable systems and analyze the taxonomy of types in the 1d Hubbard model.

The origin of degeneracies and crossings in the 1d Hubbard model

Emil A. Yuzbashyan, B. L. Altshuler, B. Sriram Shastry

The paper is devoted to the connection between integrability of a finite quantum system and degeneracies of its energy levels. In particular, we analyse in detail the energy spectra of finite Hubbard chains. Heilmann and Lieb demonstrated that in these systems there are crossings of levels of the same parameter-independent symmetry. We show that this apparent violation of the Wigner–von Neumann noncrossing rule follows directly from the existence of nontrivial conservation laws and is a characteristic signature of quantum integrability. The energy spectra of Hubbard chains display many instances of permanent (at all values of the coupling) twofold degeneracies that cannot be explained by parameter-independent symmetries. We relate these degeneracies to the different transformation properties of the conserved currents under spatial reflections and the particle–hole transformation and estimate the fraction of doubly degenerate states. We also discuss multiply degenerate eigenstates of the Hubbard Hamiltonian. The wavefunctions of many of these states do not depend on the coupling, which suggests the existence of an additional parameter-independent symmetry.

A Simple Necessary and Sufficient Condition for Yang--Baxter Integrability

Mizuki Sanatani, Naoto Shiraishi, Fuga Ishii

Quantum integrability is a cornerstone of the exact theory of interacting quantum spin chains. In its standard formulation, however, one starts from R-matrices satisfying the Yang--Baxter equation, rather than from the Hamiltonian itself. It has therefore remained unclear how Yang--Baxter solvability can be characterized directly at the Hamiltonian level, and how it is related to the existence of local conservation laws. Here we prove that, in a broad standard setting, the Reshetikhin condition is not only necessary but also sufficient for Yang--Baxter integrability, thereby reducing the hidden algebraic structure of integrability to a Hamiltonian-level conservation law. Since the Reshetikhin condition is equivalent to conservation of the total energy current, this Hamiltonian-level criterion is also experimentally accessible. This result establishes a quantum counterpart of the Liouville--Arnold theorem for isotropic spin chains, stating that Yang--Baxter solvability is equivalent to an infinite hierarchy of local conserved quantities. Our result also simplifies substantially the search for integrable spin chains by replacing the search for R-matrices with a direct criterion on local Hamiltonians.

Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in Field Theory

Goncalves de Assis

This thesis is centred around the role of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in Physics both at the quantum and classical levels. In our investigations of two-level models we demonstrate [1] the phenomenon of fast transitions developed in the PT -symmetric quantum brachistochrone problem may in fact be attributed to the non-Hermiticity of evolution operator used, rather than to its invariance under PT operation. Transition probabilities are calculated for Hamiltonians which explicitly violate PT -symmetry. When it comes to Hilbert spaces of infinite dimension, starting with non-Hermitian Hamiltonians expressed as linear and quadratic combinations of the generators of the su(1; 1) Lie algebra, we construct [2] Hermitian partners in the same similarity class. Alongside, metrics with respect to which the original Hamiltonians are Hermitian are also constructed, allowing to assign meaning to a large class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians possessing real spectra. The finding of exact results to establish the physical acceptability of other non-Hermitian models may be pursued by other means, especially if the system of interest cannot be expressed in terms of Lie algebraic elements. We also employ [3] a representation of the canonical commutation relations for position and momentum operators in terms of real-valued functions and a noncommutative product rule of differential form. Besides exact solutions, we also compute in a perturbative fashion metrics and isospectral partners for systems of physical interest. Classically, our efforts were concentrated on integrable models presenting PT - symmetry. Because the latter can also establish the reality of energies in classical systems described by Hamiltonian functions, we search for new families of nonlinear differential equations for which the presence of hidden symmetries allows one to assemble exact solutions. We use [4] the Painleve test to check whether deformations of integrable systems preserve integrability. Moreover we compare [5] integrable deformed models, which are thus likely to possess soliton solutions, to a broader class of systems presenting compacton solutions. Finally we study [6] the pole structure of certain real valued nonlinear integrable systems and establish that they behave as interacting particles whose motion can be extended to the complex plane in a PT -symmetric way.

Functionally independent conservations laws in a quantum integrable model

Haile Owusu, B. Sriram Shastry

We study a recently proposed quantum integrable model defined on a lattice with N sites, with fermions or bosons populating each site, as a close relative of the well known spin- Gaudin model. This model has 2 N arbitrary parameters, a linear dependence on an interaction type parameter x , and can be solved exactly. It has N known constants of motion that are linear in x . We display further constants of motion with higher fermion content that are linearly independent of the known conservation laws. Our main result is that despite the existence of the higher conservation laws, the model has only N functionally independent conservation laws . Therefore we propose that N can be viewed as the number of degrees of freedom, in parallel to the classical definition of integrability.
