Quantum Information Theory: Classical Communication Over Quantum Channels

John A. Cortese

This thesis studies classical communication over quantum channels. Chapter 1 describes an algebraic technique which extends several previously known qubit channel capacity results to the qudit quantum channel case. Chapter 2 derives a formula for the relative entropy function of two qubit density matrices in terms of their Bloch vectors. The application of the Bloch vector relative entropy formula to the determination of Holevo-Schumacher-Westmoreland (HSW) capacities for qubit quantum channels is discussed. Chapter 3 outlines several numerical simulation results which support theoretical conclusions and conjectures discussed in Chapters 1 and 2. Chapter 4 closes the thesis with comments, examples and discussion on the additivity of Holevo Chi and the HSW channel capacity.

Investigation of a Two-Qubit Decoherence by Using Bloch Vectors

Fahimeh Ahmadi, Safa Jami

The loss of the coherence happens due to the interaction between the desired system and its surroundings.Addressing decoherence is one of the main concepts in the study of quantum channels to access their potential for various scale. In this process the information of the system is penetrated into the environment. Therefore, the measurement of the environment could be used as the error correction method.Phase damping channels principally belong to random unitary channels and can be corrected by classical information. This paper presents a method to generate non-random unitary phase damping channels based on the Bloch vectors in two qubits systems.A phase damping channel which consisted of a two qubits system and a single qubit environment was investigated. The results demonstrated that the phase damping channels belong to random unitary dynamics if the three-dimensional tetrahedron volume spanned by the Bloch vectors in R 3 is not zero, or, the same hyperplane in R 3 was not pointed by the Bloch vectors. It is found that the Bell state belongs to random unitary class and can be corrected based on classical information obtained from environmental measurements.

Nonlinear and non-CP gates for Bloch vector amplification

Michael R. Geller

Abstract Any state r = (x, y, z) of a qubit, written in the Pauli basis and initialized in the pure state r = (0, 0, 1), can be prepared by composing three quantum operations: two unitary rotation gates to reach a pure state r = x 2 + y 2 + z 2 − 1 2 × ( x , y , z ) on the Bloch sphere, followed by a depolarization gate to decrease ∣ r ∣. Here we discuss the complementary state-preparation protocol for qubits initialized at the center of the Bloch ball, r = 0, based on increasing or amplifying ∣ r ∣ to its desired value, then rotating. Bloch vector amplification increases purity and decreases entropy. Amplification can be achieved with a linear Markovian completely positive trace-preserving (CPTP) channel by placing the channel’s fixed point away from r = 0, making it nonunital, but the resulting gate suffers from a critical slowing down as that fixed point is approached. Here we consider alternative designs based on linear and nonlinear Markovian PTP channels, which offer benefits relative to linear CPTP channels, namely fast Bloch vector amplification without deceleration. These gates simulate a reversal of the thermodynamic arrow of time for the qubit and would provide striking experimental demonstrations of non-CP dynamics.
