Abstract

We develop a diagrammatic perturbation treatment to calculate the zero-temperature equation of state of the dilute gas mixture of a single spin component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and a normal Fermi gas of indistinguishable (single spin) fermion particles. We find that the mean-field description breaks down near the mechanical instability related to the phase separation phenomenon. Our analysis shows that the instability is caused by the competition of the usual short-range and fermion-mediated boson-boson interactions, which result in a boson compressibility that diverges. In the low BEC-density limit, we show that the diagrammatic analysis simplifies, we sum part of the higher-order diagrams, and we discuss the effects of other higher-order contributions.

Bose-Einstein condensation and density collapse in a weakly coupled boson-fermion mixture

Kyoko Shirasaki, Eiji Nakano, Hiroyuki Yabu

We investigate the mechanical instability toward density collapse and the transition temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in the weakly coupled boson-fermion many-body mixture of single-component boson and fermion gases, in the case of the repulsive boson-boson and attractive boson-fermion interactions; no fermion-fermion interaction is assumed to be originated from the Pauli exclusion because of the diluteness of the mixture. The mechanical instability occurs in the bosonic gas where the induced boson-boson attraction mediated by the fermion polarization overcomes the boson-boson repulsive interaction at low temperatures. We calculate the onset temperature of the mechanical instability and the BEC transition temperature for the interaction strength and the boson-fermion number ratio. We also discuss the relation between the mechanical instability and the BEC transition using a diagrammatic method.

Collective excitations of low-density fermion-boson quantum-liquid mixtures

D. H. Santamore, Eddy Timmermans

We investigate the collective excitations of a low-temperature dilute gas mixture that consists of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and a Fermi gas that is a normal (i.e., nonsuperfluid) Fermi liquid. We find that the BEC-mediated fermion-fermion interactions, as a consequence of retardation, can become repulsive and support a zero-sound mode that is essentially undamped. In addition, we find a damped zero-sound mode that can be described as a BEC sound mode modified by fermion-mediated boson-boson interactions, and we derive its decay rate caused by Landau damping. We study the mode structure of these excitations and find avoided-crossing behavior as well as a termination point. The collective-mode dynamics also reveals that phase separation sets in when the fermion-mediated boson-boson interaction destroys the stability of the homogeneous BEC. We estimate the time and length scales of the onset of the phase separation, and we discuss the feasibility of experimentally probing these consequences of mediated interactions.

Quantum field theory of dilute homogeneous Bose-Fermi mixtures at zero temperature: General formalism and beyond mean-field corrections

Alexander P. Albus, S. A. Gardiner, Fabrizio Illuminati +1 more

We consider a dilute homogeneous mixture of bosons and spin-polarized fermions at zero temperature. We first construct the formal scheme for carrying out systematic perturbation theory in terms of single particle Green's functions. We especially focus on the description of the boson-fermion interaction. To do so we need to introduce the renormalized boson-fermion $T$ matrix, which we determine to second order in the boson-fermion $s$-wave scattering length. We also discuss how to incorporate the usual boson-boson $T$ matrix in mean field approximation to obtain the total ground-state properties of the system. The next-order term beyond mean field stems from the boson-fermion interaction and is proportional to ${a}_{\mathrm{BF}}{k}_{\mathrm{F}}.$ The total ground-state energy density to this order is the sum of the kinetic energy of the free fermions, the boson-boson mean-field interaction, the usual mean-field contribution to the boson-fermion interaction energy, and the first boson-fermion correction beyond mean field. We also compute the bosonic and the fermionic chemical potentials, the compressibilities, and the modification to the induced fermion-fermion interaction. We discuss the behavior of the total ground-state energy and the importance of the correction beyond mean field for various parameter regimes, in particular considering mixtures of ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ and ${}^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ and of ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ and ${}^{4}\mathrm{He}.$ Moreover, we determine the modification of the induced fermion-fermion interaction due to the effects beyond mean field. We show that there is no effect on the depletion of the Bose condensate to first order in the boson-fermion scattering length ${a}_{\mathrm{BF}}.$

Thermodynamic stability, compressibility matrices, and effects of mediated interactions in a strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture

Koki Manabe, Yoji Ohashi

We theoretically investigate the thermodynamic stability of a normal-state Bose-Fermi mixture, with a tunable Bose-Fermi pairing interaction $\ensuremath{-}{U}_{\mathrm{BF}}<0$ associated with a heteronuclear Feshbach resonance, as well as a weak repulsive Bose-Bose interaction ${U}_{\mathrm{BB}}\ensuremath{\ge}0$. Including strong heteropairing fluctuations associated with the former interaction within the self-consistent $T$-matrix approximation, as well as the latter within the mean-field level, we calculate the compressibility matrix, to assess the stability of this system against density fluctuations. In the weak- and the intermediate-coupling regimes with respect to $\ensuremath{-}{U}_{\mathrm{BF}}$, we show that an effective attractive interaction between bosons mediated by density fluctuations in the Fermi component makes the system unstable below a certain temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{clp}}$ (leading to density collapse). When ${U}_{\mathrm{BB}}=0, {T}_{\mathrm{clp}}$ is always higher than the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$. When ${U}_{\mathrm{BB}}>0$, the density collapse is suppressed, and the BEC transition becomes possible. It is also suppressed by the formation of tightly bound Bose-Fermi molecules when the heteropairing interaction $\ensuremath{-}{U}_{\mathrm{BF}}$ is strong; however, since the system may be viewed as a molecular Fermi gas in this case, the BEC transition does not also occur. Since quantum gases involving Bose atoms are known to be sensitive to interparticle correlations, our results would be useful for the study of many-body properties of a Bose-Fermi mixture in a stable manner, without facing the unwanted density collapse.

Mixtures of ultracold fermions with unequal masses

M. Iskin, C. A. R. Sá de Melo

We analyze the phase diagram of superfluidity for two-species fermion mixtures from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) limit as a function of scattering parameter, population imbalance, and mass anisotropy. We identify regions corresponding to normal, or uniform or nonuniform superfluid phases, and discuss topological quantum phase transitions in the BCS, unitarity, and BEC limits. We derive the Ginzburg-Landau equation near the critical temperature, and show that it describes a dilute mixture of paired and unpaired fermions in the BEC limit. We also obtain the zero temperature low frequency and long wavelength collective excitation spectrum, and recover the Bogoliubov relation for weakly interacting dilute bosons in the BEC limit. Lastly, we discuss the effects of harmonic traps and the resulting density profiles in the BEC regime.

Zero Sound in a Mixture of a Single-Component Fermion Gas and a Bose-Einstein Condensate

D. H. Santamore, S. Gaudio, Eddy Timmermans

The resonant dynamics of mediated interactions supports zero sound in a cold atom degenerate mixture of a single-component fermion gas and a Bose-Einstein condensate. We characterize the onset of instability in the phase separation of an unstable mixture and we find a rich collective mode structure for stable mixtures with one undamped mode that exhibits an avoided crossing and a Landau-damped mode that terminates.
