Quantum Phase Transition in a Far-from-Equilibrium Steady State of an X Y Spin Chain

Abstract

Using quantization in the Fock space of operators, we compute the nonequilibrium steady state in an open Heisenberg XY spin 1/2 chain of a finite but large size coupled to Markovian baths at its ends. Numerical and theoretical evidence is given for a far-from-equilibrium quantum phase transition with the spontaneous emergence of long-range order in spin-spin correlation functions, characterized by a transition from saturation to linear growth with the size of the entanglement entropy in operator space.

Long-Range Order in Nonequilibrium Interacting Quantum Spin Chains

Tomaž Prosen, Marko Žnidarič

We conjecture that nonequilibrium boundary conditions generically trigger long-range order in nonequilibrium steady states of locally interacting quantum chains. Our result is based on large scale density matrix renormalization group simulations of several models of quantum spin-1/2 chains which are driven far from equilibrium by coupling to a pair of unequal Lindblad reservoirs attached locally to the ends of the chain. In particular, we find a phase transition from exponentially decaying to long-range spin-spin correlations in an integrable Heisenberg XXZ chain by changing the anisotropy parameter. Long-range order also typically emerges after breaking the integrability of the model.

Nonequilibrium phases and phase transitions of the XY model

Tharnier O. Puel, Stefano Chesi, Stefan Kirchner +1 more

We obtain the steady-state phase diagram of a transverse-field XY spin chain coupled at its ends to magnetic reservoirs held at different magnetic potentials. In the long-time limit, the magnetization bias across the system generates a current-carrying nonequilibrium steady state. We characterize the different nonequilibrium phases as functions of the chain's parameters and magnetic potentials, in terms of their correlation functions and entanglement content. The mixed-order transition, previously observed for the case of a transverse-field Ising chain, is established to emerge as a generic feature of a wider class of out-of-equilibrium problems. The critical exponents associated with this universality class are determined analytically. Results are also contrasted with those obtained in the limit of Markovian reservoirs. Our findings should prove helpful in establishing the properties of nonequilibrium phases and phase transitions of extended open quantum systems.

Exact solution for a diffusive nonequilibrium steady state of an open quantum chain

Marko Žnidarič

We calculate a nonequilibrium steady state of a quantum XX chain in the presence of dephasing and driving due to baths at chain ends. The obtained state is exact in the limit of weak driving while the expressions for one- and two-point correlations are exact for an arbitrary driving strength. In the steady state the magnetization profile and the spin current display diffusive behavior. The spin–spin correlation function, on the other hand, has long-range correlations which, though, decay to zero in either the thermodynamical limit or for equilibrium driving. At zero dephasing a nonequilibrium phase transition occurs from a ballistic transport having short-range correlations to a diffusive transport with long-range correlations.

Exact Nonequilibrium Steady State of a Strongly Driven Open XXZ Chain

Tomaž Prosen

An exact and explicit ladder-tensor-network ansatz is presented for the nonequilibrium steady state of an anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain which is driven far from equilibrium with a pair of Lindblad operators acting on the edges of the chain only. We show that the steady-state density operator of a finite system of size n is-apart from a normalization constant-a polynomial of degree 2n - 2 in the coupling constant. Efficient computation of physical observables is facilitated in terms of a transfer operator reminiscent of a classical Markov process. In the isotropic case we find cosine spin profiles, 1/n(2) scaling of the spin current, and long-range correlations in the steady state. This is a fully nonperturbative extension of a recent result [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 217206 (2011)].

Operator space entanglement entropy in X Y spin chains

Iztok Pižorn, Tomaž Prosen

The complexity of representation of operators in quantum mechanics can be characterized by the operator space entanglement entropy (OSEE). We show that in the homogeneous Heisenberg $XY$ spin 1/2 chains the OSEE for initial local operators grows at most logarithmically with time. The prefactor in front of the logarithm generally depends only on the number of stationary points of the quasiparticle dispersion relation and for the $XY$ model changes from 1/3 to 2/3 exactly at the point of quantum phase transition to long-range magnetic correlations in the nonequilibrium steady state. In addition, we show that the presence of a small disorder triggers a saturation of the OSEE.

On a quantum phase transition in a steady state out of equilibrium

Walter H. Aschbacher

Abstract Within the rigorous axiomatic framework for the description of quantum mechanical systems with a large number of degrees of freedom, we show that the nonequilibrium steady state, constructed in the quasifree fermionic system corresponding to the isotropic XY chain in which a finite sample, coupled to two thermal reservoirs at different temperatures, is exposed to a local external magnetic field, is breaking translation invariance and exhibits a strictly positive entropy production rate. Moreover, we prove that there exists a second-order nonequilibrium quantum phase transition with respect to the strength of the magnetic field as soon as the system is truly out of equilibrium.
