Review of Indirect Methods Used to Determine the $^1S_0$ Neutron-Neutron Scattering Length

Abstract

We have determined a value for the $^1S_0$ neutron-neutron scattering length ($a_{nn}$) from high-precision measurements of time-of-flight spectra of neutrons from the $^2H(π^-,n γ)n$ capture reaction. The measurements were done at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility by the E1286 collaboration. The high spatial resolution of our gamma-ray detector enabled us to make a detailed assessment of the systematic uncertainties in our techniques. The value obtained in the present work is $a_{nn} = -18$.63 $\pm $0.10 (statistical) $\pm$ 0.44 (systematic) $\pm$ 0.30 (theoretical) fm. This result is consistent with previous determinations of $a_{nn}$ from the $π^-d$ capture reaction. We found that the analysis of the data with calculations that use a relativistic phase-space factor gives a more negative value for $a_{nn}$ by 0.33 fm over the analysis done using a nonrelativistic phase-space factor. Combining the present result with the previous ones from $π^-d$ capture gives: $a_{nn} = - 18$.63 $\pm$ 0.27 (expt) $\pm$ 0.30 fm (theory). For the first time the combined statistical and systematic experimental uncertainty in $a_{nn}$ is smaller than the theoretical uncertainty and comparable to the uncertainty in the proton-proton $^1S_0$ scattering length ($a_{pp}$). This average value of $a_{nn}$ when corrected for the magnetic-moment interaction of the two neutrons becomes -18.9 $\pm$ 0.4 fm which is 1.6 $\pm$ 0.5 fm different from the recommended value of $a_{pp}$, thereby confirming charge symmetry breaking at the 1% confidence level.

Precision measurement of the bound-coherent-neutron scattering length of U235

M. Arif, Helmut Kaiser, S. Werner +1 more

With use of the neutron interferometric technique, the real parts of the bound-coherent scattering length, b, of $^{235}\mathrm{U}$ have been precisely measured for five different incident neutron energies in the range of 30 to 92 meV. The value of b at each incident neutron energy was obtained from the average of two independent measurements using two samples of different thicknesses. The results are b=10.47\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04 fm (E=30.34 meV), b=10.47\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03 fm (E=41.02 meV), b=10.51\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03 fm (E=51.43 meV), b=10.39\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03 fm (E=74.90 meV), b=10.41\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03 fm (E=91.39 meV). The uncertainty in these results is about an order of magnitude smaller than the present literature value. The small energy dependence of the observed scattering lengths has been used to establish the parameters of the negative energy resonance level (-1.4 eV) using the Breit-Wigner formalism.

Quantum Beam Scattering—Beam’s Coherence Length, Which-Path Information and Weak Values

C. A. Chatzidimitriou‐Dreismann

The conventional theory of neutron beams interacting with many-body systems treats the beam as a classical system, i.e. with its dynamical variables appearing in the quantum dynamics of the scattering process not as operators but only as c-numbers. Moreover, neutrons are described with plane waves, i.e. the concept of neutron's (finite) coherence length is here irrelevant. The same holds for electron, atom or X-ray scattering. This simplification results in the full decoupling of the probe particle's dynamics from the quantum dynamics of the scatterer---a well-known fact also reflected in the standard formalism of time-correlation functions (see textbooks). Making contact with modern quantum theoretical approaches (e.g., quantum entanglement, 'which-path detection' versus interference, von Neumann measurement, Week Values, etc.) new observable effects may be exposed and/or predicted, for instance, a momentum-transfer deficit and an intensity deficit in neutron scattering from protons of hydrogen-containing samples. 7

Neutron-triton cross sections and scattering lengths obtained fromp −3 He scattering

Gerald M. Hale, D.C. Dodder, J. D. Seagrave +2 more

An approximately Coulomb-corrected, charge-symmetric R-matrix prediction for n${\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}^{3}$H scattering from analyzing p${\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}^{3}$He data is described, which deviates at most by 2% from the n${\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}^{3}$H total cross section. The total cross section, together with a new measurement of the coherent scattering length now allows two possible sets of singlet and triplet scattering lengths ${\mathit{a}}_{\mathit{s}}$ and ${\mathit{a}}_{\mathit{t}}$. Our analysis agrees well with the new value of the coherent scattering length, and determines the set with ${\mathit{a}}_{\mathit{s}}$/${\mathit{a}}_{\mathit{t}}$>1 to be the correct one.

Dimer scattering in the epsilon expansion

Gautam Rupak

The atom-dimer and dimer-dimer scattering lengths are analytically calculated in an expansion around four spatial dimensions for fermions with a large 2-body scattering length 'a'. We find the atom-dimer scattering length a_ad/a = 4/3-2/9 epsilon and the dimer-dimer scattering length a_dd/a = epsilon -0.344 epsilon^2, where epsilon = 4-d and d is the number of spatial dimensions. These ratios a_ad/a = 1.11 and a_dd/a = 0.656 at epsilon = 1 are to be compared with the non-perturbatively calculated numerical results 1.18 and 0.6 respectively. The neutron-deuteron scattering length in the quartet channel a_nD = 4.78 fm is in reasonable agreement with the experimental value 6.35 fm, considering 2-body effective range corrections r_0/a = 0.4 were excluded. The deuteron-deuteron scattering length a_DD = 3.15 fm in the spin-2 channel.

Scattering lengths for p−3He elastic scattering from an effective-range phase shift analysis

Elizabeth George, L. D. Knutson

We have extended an earlier phase-shift analysis of $p{\ensuremath{-}}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ scattering data by including additional low-energy measurements in the dataset. The $p{\ensuremath{-}}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ zero-energy scattering lengths obtained from this analysis depend sensitively on a group of cross section and analyzing power measurements at proton energies below 1 MeV. When this group of measurements is included in the dataset, two possible phase-shift solutions are found. The first solution yields a singlet scattering length of ${a}_{s}=15.1\mathrm{fm}$ and a triplet scattering length of ${a}_{t}=7.9\mathrm{fm},$ while the second solution yields values of ${a}_{s}=7.2\mathrm{fm}$ and ${a}_{t}=10.4\mathrm{fm}.$ Without this group of measurements, the best-fit scattering lengths are ${a}_{s}=10.3\mathrm{fm}$ and ${a}_{t}=8.2\mathrm{fm}.$ We believe that the scattering lengths are currently not well determined experimentally and that additional low-energy $p{\ensuremath{-}}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ data are needed in order to clarify the situation.

Unitarity potentials and neutron matter at the unitary limit

Huan Dong, L.-W. Siu, T.T.S. Kuo +1 more

We study the equation of state of neutron matter using a family of unitarity potentials, all of which are constructed to have infinite ${}^{1}{S}_{0}$ scattering lengths ${a}_{s}$. For such a system, a quantity of much interest is the ratio $\ensuremath{\xi}={E}_{0}/{E}_{0}^{\mathrm{free}}$, where ${E}_{0}$ is the true ground-state energy of the system and ${E}_{0}^{\mathrm{free}}$ is that for the noninteracting system. In the limit of ${a}_{s}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\infty}$, often referred to as the unitary limit, this ratio is expected to approach a universal constant, namely $\ensuremath{\xi}~0.44(1)$. In the present work we calculate this ratio $\ensuremath{\xi}$ using a family of hard-core square-well potentials whose ${a}_{s}$ can be exactly obtained, thus enabling us to have many potentials of different ranges and strengths, all with infinite ${a}_{s}$. We have also calculated $\ensuremath{\xi}$ using a unitarity CDBonn potential obtained by slightly scaling its meson parameters. The ratios $\ensuremath{\xi}$ given by these different unitarity potentials are all close to each other and also remarkably close to 0.44, suggesting that the above ratio $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is indifferent to the details of the underlying interactions as long as they have infinite scattering length. A sum-rule and scaling constraint for the renormalized low-momentum interaction in neutron matter at the unitary limit is studied. The importance of pairing in our all-order ring diagram and model-space HF calculations of neutron matter is discussed.
