Spontaneous symmetry breaking induced by interaction in linearly coupled binary Bose Einstein condensates

Mateus C. P. dos Santos, Wesley Bueno Cardoso

We analyze the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) induced by one specific component of a linearly coupled binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The model is based on linearly coupled Schrödinger equations with cubic nonlinearity and with a double-well (DW) potential acting on only one of the atomic components. By numerical simulations, symmetric and asymmetric ground-states were obtained, and an induced asymmetry in the partner field was observed. In this sense, we properly demonstrated that the linear coupling mixing the two-field component (Rabi coupling) promotes the (in)balance between atomic species, as well as the appearance of the Josephson and SSB phases.

Double-Well Potentials In Bose-Einstein Condensates

Wang Chenyu

This dissertation concentrates on the existence, stability and dynamical properties of nonlinear waves in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped in doublewell potentials (DWPs). The fundamental model of interest will be the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the so-called Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation, contributed to the well-established mean-field description of BECs. In this context of the GP equation with DWP, a Galerkin-type few-mode approach provides us a powerful handle towards studying the stationary states and predicting the bifurcation diagram including the occurrence of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB). Such method and the corresponding phenomena are discussed based on a prototypical quasi-1D model in Chapter 2. The systematic analysis progresses by considering various modified models, starting with the ones involving different interatomic interactions, e.g., collisionally inhomogeneous interactions, long-range interactions, and competing of short- and long-range interactions. We observe how the basic SSB bifurcation structure persists or is appropriately modified in the presence of these interactions in Chapter 3. We also extend the study to multi-component systems, including nonlinearly coupled two-component settings and F = 1 spinor BECs (genuinely three-component settings) confined in DWPs, where besides the one-component stationary states, combined states involving two or three components appear as well, and novel SSB phenomena emerge within them. Finally the trapped stationary modes of a twodimensional (2D) GP equation with a symmetric four-well potential are explored, providing the picture of SSB in the fundamental 2D setting. These various systems are studied in Chapter 4 - 6. In all models, our analytical predictions based on the few-mode approximation are in excellent agreement with the numerical results of the full GP equations.

Fundamental modes in waveguide pipe twisted by saturated double-well potential

Guihua Chen, Hongcheng Wang, Zhaopin Chen +1 more

We study fundamental modes trapped in a rotating ring with a saturated nonlinear double-well potential. This model, which is based on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, can be constructed in a twisted waveguide pipe in terms of light propagation, or in a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded into a toroidal trap under a combination of a rotating π-out-of-phase linear potential and nonlinear pseudopotential induced by means of a rotating optical field and the Feshbach resonance. Three types of fundamental modes are identified in this model, one symmetric and the other two asymmetric. The shape and stability of the modes and the transitions between different modes are investigated in the first rotational Brillouin zone. A similar model used a Kerr medium to build its nonlinear potential, but we replace it with a saturated nonlinear medium. The model exhibits not only symmetry breaking, but also symmetry recovery. A specific type of unstable asymmetric mode is also found, and the evolution of the unstable asymmetric mode features Josephson oscillation between two linear wells. By considering the model as a configuration of a BEC system, the ground state mode is identified among these three types, which characterize a specific distribution of the BEC atoms around the trap.
