Phase separation in fermionic systems with particle–hole asymmetry

Abstract

We determine the ground-state phase diagram of a Hubbard Hamiltonian with correlated hopping, which is asymmetric under particle–hole transform. By lowering the repulsive Coulomb interaction U at appropriate filling and interaction parameters, the ground state separates into hole and electron conducting phases: two different wavevectors characterize the system and charge–charge correlations become incommensurate. By further decreasing U another transition occurs at which the hole conducting region becomes insulating, and conventional phase separation takes place. Finally, for negative U the whole system eventually becomes a paired insulator. It is speculated that such behavior could be at the origin of the incommensurate superconducting phase recently discovered in the 1D Hirsch model. The exact phase boundaries are calculated in one dimension.

Particle–hole asymmetry as a source of phase separation at the metal–insulator transition

Igor N. Karnaukhov, Ilya Eremin

We propose a strongly correlated (1+1)D electron model with particle–hole asymmetry which is exactly solvable by means of the nested Bethe ansatz. The particle–hole asymmetry in this many-body system causes a metal–insulator transition with a phase separation. Here, we give a detailed analysis of the zero-temperature phase diagram of the model and demonstrate how this unusual behavior of the metal–insulator transition with phase separation arises. In particular, we show that a homogeneous phase of itinerant electrons and a mixed phase of itinerant electrons and localized electron pairs (for which two different species reside in spatially separated regions) define the ground state of a fermion chain. We also find that the metal–insulator phase transition induces phase transition on the surface with simultaneous generation of the interphase boundary.

Nanoscale phase separation and superconductivity in the one-dimensional Hirsch model

Alberto Anfossi, C. Degli Esposti Boschi, Arianna Montorsi

We investigate numerically at various fillings the ground state of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with correlated hopping $x$ (Hirsch model). It is found that, for a large range of filling values $n$ around half filling, and for repulsive Coulomb interaction $u\ensuremath{\le}{u}_{c}(x,n)$, phase separation at a nanoscale (NPS phase) between two conducting phases at different densities occurs when $x\ensuremath{\gtrsim}2/3$. The NPS phase is accompanied by the opening of a spin gap and the system behaves as a Luther-Emery liquid with dominant superconducting correlations. Close to half filling, an anomalous peak emerges in the charge structure factor related to the density of doubly occupied sites, which determines the size of the droplets in the NPS phase. For $1/2\ensuremath{\lesssim}x\ensuremath{\lesssim}2/3$ a crossover to a homogeneous phase, still superconducting, takes place.

Phase diagram of the asymmetric Hubbard model

Pavol Farkašovský

The ground-state phase diagram of the asymmetric Hubbard model is studied in one and two dimensions by a well-controlled numerical method. The method allows us to calculate directly the probabilities of particular phases in the approximate ground state and thus to specify the stability domains corresponding to phases with the highest probabilities. Depending on the electron filling $n$ and the magnitude of the asymmetry ${t}_{f}∕{t}_{d}$ between the hopping integrals of $f$ and $d$ electrons two different scenarios in formation of ground states are observed. At low electron fillings $(n\ensuremath{\leqslant}1∕3)$ the ground states are always phase segregated in the limit of strong asymmetry $({t}_{d}⪢{t}_{f})$. With decreasing asymmetry the system undergoes a transition to the phase-separated state and then to the homogeneous state. For electron fillings $n>1∕3$ and weak Coulomb interactions the ground state is homogeneous for all values of asymmetry, while for intermediate and strong interactions the system exhibits the same sequence of phase transitions as for $n$ small. Moreover, it is shown that the segregated phase is significantly stabilized with increasing electron filling, while the separated phases disappear gradually from the ground-state phase diagrams.

Superconductivity in Hubbard Model with Correlated Hopping

Bogdan R. Bułka, M. Robaszewska

Using the slave-boson method in its spin-and charge-rotational invariant representation we determine stability of the superconducting state in the Hubbard model with correlated hopping. In general the term with correlated hopping violates electron-hole symmetry, however, in the special case when the correlated hopping integral X is equal to the uncorrelated hopping inte- gral t the electron-hole symmetry remains. We investigate this case and show that correlations induced by onsite Coulomb interactions U yield to the nor- mal state with exactly single occupied sites (corresponding to |U = oo)).The phase diagram of the superconducting state is determined for the different electron concentration n.At the half-filled band (n = 1) a direct transition from the Mott insulator to the superconducting state occurs.

Possible exotic phases in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

Rudolf Torsten Clay, Anders W. Sandvik, David K Campbell

We investigate numerically the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model, including an on-site interaction U and a nearest-neighbor interaction V. We focus on the ground state phases of the model in the $V\ensuremath{\gg}U$ region, where previous studies have suggested the possibility of dominant superconducting pairing fluctuations before the system phase separates at a critical value ${V=V}_{\mathrm{PS}}.$ Using quantum Monte Carlo methods on lattices much larger than in previous Lancz\"os diagonalization studies, we determine the boundary of phase separation, the Luttinger-liquid correlation exponent ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}},$ and other correlation functions in this region. We find that phase separation occurs for V significantly smaller than previously reported. In addition, for negative U, we find that a uniform state reenters from phase separation as the electron density is increased towards half filling. For $V<{V}_{\mathrm{PS}},$ our results show that superconducting fluctuations are not dominant. The system behaves asymptotically as a Luttinger liquid with ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}<1,$ but we also find strong low-energy (but gapped) charge-density fluctuations at a momentum not expected for a standard Luttinger liquid.

Superconducting ground state in a model with bond-charge interaction

Marco Airoldi, Alberto Parola

An electronic Hubbard-type model with bond-charge interaction and on-site repulsion U is studied in one and two dimensions. Evidence is provided in favor of superconductivity, without phase separation, for U${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$(n), although no explicit attraction between particles is present in the Hamiltonian. The presence of a bound state for two particles in vacuum in D=1 and 2 (but not for D=3) suggests that, at low density and low dimensionality, superconductivity is due to condensation of preexistent pairs (dimers). The one-dimensional (1D) phase diagram is studied analytically as well as numerically and shows a transiiton between a Luttinger liquid and a strong-coupling phase with diverging superconducting susceptibility. Estimates of critical exponents are given at low density and at quarter filling for several values of the parameters. The 2D model at quarter filling is analyzed by Lanczos diagonalization on a 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 cluster. The numerical results are consistent with the phase diagram obtained by BCS mean-field theory and is qualitatively similar to the 1D case: a ground state with spin gap and off-diagonal long-range order at U${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$(n); and a Fermi liquid above ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$ with no sign of phase separation.
