Explicit demonstration of nonabelian anyon, braiding matrix and fusion rules in the Kitaev-type spin honeycomb lattice models

Abstract

The exact solubility of the Kitaev-type spin honeycomb lattice model was proved by means of a Majorana fermion representation or a Jordan-Wigner transformation while the explicit form of the anyon in terms of Pauli matrices became not transparent. The nonabelian statistics of anyons and the fusion rules can only be expressed in indirect ways to Pauli matrices. We convert the ground state and anyonic excitations back to the forms of Pauli matrices and explicitly demonstrate the nonabelian anyonic statistics as well as the fusion rules. These results may instruct the experimental realization of the nonabelian anyons. We suggest a proof-in-principle experiment to verify the existence of the nonabelian anyons in nature.

Explicit illustration of non-abelian fusion rules in a small spin lattice

Yue Yu, Tieyan Si

We exactly solve a four-site spin model with site-dependent Kitaev's coupling in a tetrahedron by means of an analytical diagonalization. The non-abelian fusion rules of eigen vortex excitations in this small lattice model are explicitly illustrated in real space by using Pauli matrices. Comparing with solutions of Kitaev models on large lattices, our solution gives an intuitional picture using real space spin configurations to directly express zero modes of Majorana fermions, non-abelian vortices and non-abelian fusion rules. We generalize the single tetrahedron model to a chain model of tetrahedrons on a torus and find the non-abelian vortices become well-defined non-abelian anyons. We believe these manifest results are very helpful to demonstrate the nonabelian anyon in laboratory.

Exact results of the Kitaev model on a hexagonal lattice: spin states, string and brane correlators, and anyonic excitations

Han-Dong Chen, Zohar Nussinov

In this work, we illustrate how a Jordan-Wigner transformation combined with symmetry considerations enables a direct solution of Kitaev's model on the honeycomb lattice. We (i) express the p-wave type fermionic ground states of this system in terms of the original spins, (ii) adduce that symmetry alone dictates the existence of string and planar brane type correlators and their composites, (iii) compute the value of such non-local correlators by employing the Jordan-Wigner transformation, (iv) affirm that the spectrum is inconsequential to the existence of topological quantum order and that such information is encoded in the states themselves, and (v) express the anyonic character of the excitations in this system and the local symmetries that it harbors in terms of fermions.

An Anyon Model in a Toric Honeycomb Lattice

Long Liang, Yue Yu

We study an anyon model in a toric honeycomb lattice. The ground states and the low-lying excitations coincide with those of Kitaev toric code model and then the excitations obey mutual semionic statistics. This model is helpful to understand the toric code of anyons in a more symmetric way. On the other hand, there is a direct relation between this toric honeycomb model and a boundary coupled Ising chain array in a square lattice via Jordan—Wigner transformation. We discuss the equivalence between these two models in the low-lying sector and realize these anyon excitations in a conventional fermion system. The analysis for the ground state degeneracy in the last section can also be thought of as a complementarity of our previous work [ Phys. A: Math. Theor. 43 (2010) 105306 ].

Non-Abelian Anyons in the Kitaev Honeycomb Model

Ahmet Tuna Bolukbasi

The non-Abelian Berry phase is an essential feature of non-Abelian anyons for the realization of topological quantum computation. This thesis is primarily a study about the numerical calculation of the Berry phase of non-Abelian anyons in the Kitaev honeycomb lattice model. It is also a guide for experimental the realizations of the actual brading process. We give an introduction to the theory of non-Abelian anyons, briefly discussing in what kind of systems they are realized, and their possible use in topological quantum computation. Non-Abelian anyons are studied within the Kitaev honeycomb model where they are realized on the plaquettes of the honeycomb lattice. The Kitaev honeycomb model can be solved exactly by using various fermionization methods. In this thesis, we review a solution based on Jordan-Wigner types of fermions which transform Hamiltonian to a fermionic quadratic form. This kind of fermionization procedure is quite general and can be applied to any trivalent spin lattice models. Moreover, we introduce Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method to solve general quadratic fermionic Hamiltonian and employ Bloch-Messiah theorem in order to write ground state wave function explicitly. Later, we apply these methods to honeycomb model and study the eigenstates of the model so that we can do the Berry phase calculation. The final chapter explains the details of the numerical calculation of the non-Abelian Berry phase. First, we show how to create and adiabatically move vortices in the honeycomb model. A brief review of the Berry phase is given including some discussion about a numerical approach. Later on Thouless’ representation of the ground state is introduced to calculate the Berry phase. All these theoretical tools are applied to a 4 vortex configuration of the model to calculate the non-Abelian Berry phase of the system on a particular path in the parameter space.

Demonstrating Anyonic Fractional Statistics with a Six-Qubit Quantum Simulator

Chao‐Yang Lu, Weibo Gao, Otfried Gühne +3 more

Anyons are exotic quasiparticles living in two dimensions that do not fit into the usual categories of fermions and bosons, but obey a new form of fractional statistics. Following a recent proposal [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 150404 (2007)], we present an experimental demonstration of the fractional statistics of anyons in the Kitaev spin lattice model using a photonic quantum simulator. We dynamically create the ground state and excited states (which are six-qubit graph states) of the Kitaev model Hamiltonian, and implement the anyonic braiding and fusion operations by single-qubit rotations. A phase shift of pi related to the anyon braiding is observed, confirming the prediction of the fractional statistics of Abelian 1/2 anyons.

Lattice Defects in the Kitaev Honeycomb Model

John Brennan, Jiří Vala

The Kitaev honeycomb lattice system is an important model of topological materials whose phase diagram exhibits both abelian and non-abelian topological phases. The latter, a so-called Ising phase, is related to topological superconductors. Its quasiparticle excitations, which are formed by Majorana fermions attached to vortices, show non-abelian fractional statistics and are known as Ising anyons. We investigate dislocation defects in the Ising phase of the Kitaev honeycomb model. After introducing them to the system, we accordingly generalize our solution of this model to the situation with the defects. The important part of this effort is developing an appropriate Jordan-Wigner fermionization procedure. It is expected that the presence of defects manifests itself by the formation of fermionic zero-energy modes around the defect end points. We numerically confirm this expectation and further investigate properties of these modes. The computational potential of our technique is demonstrated for both diagonalization and dynamical simulations. The latter focuses on the process of fusion of the vortex zero-energy modes with the Majorana fermions attached to the defect. This process simulates fusion of non-abelian Ising anyons.
