Abstract

We determine the symmetry of Cooper pairs, on the basis of the perturbation theory in terms of the Coulomb interaction U , for the two-dimensional Hubbard model on the square lattice. The phase diagram is investigated in detail. The Hubbard model for small U is mapped on to an effective Hamiltonian with the attractive interaction using the canonical transformation: H eff = e S H e − S . The gap equation of the weak coupling formulation is solved without numerical ambiguity to determine the symmetry of Cooper pairs. The superconducting gap crucially depends on the position of the van Hove singularity. We show the phase diagram in the plane of the electron filling n e and the next nearest-neighbor transfer t '. The d-wave pairing is dominant for the square lattice in a wide range of n e and t '. The d-wave pairing is also stable for the square lattice with anisotropic t '. The three-band d–p model is also investigated, for which the d-wave pairing is stable in a wide range of n e and t pp (the transfer between neighboring oxygen atoms). In the weak coupling analysis, the second-neighbor transfer parameter - t ' could not be so large so that the optimum doping rate is in the range of 0.8 < n e < 0.85.

Ground-state phase diagram of the repulsive fermionic t−t′ Hubbard model on the square lattice from weak coupling

Fedor Šimkovic, Xuan-Wen Liu, Youjin Deng +1 more

We obtain a complete and numerically exact in the weak-coupling limit $(U\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0)$ ground-state phase diagram of the repulsive fermionic Hubbard model on the square lattice for filling factors $0<n<2$ and next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitudes $0\ensuremath{\le}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\le}0.5$. Phases are distinguished by the symmetry and the number of nodes of the superfluid order parameter. The phase diagram is richer than may be expected and typically features states with a high---higher than that of the fundamental mode of the corresponding irreducible representation---number of nodes. The effective coupling strength in the Cooper channel $\ensuremath{\lambda}$, which determines the critical temperature ${T}_{c}$ of the superfluid transition, is calculated in the whole parameter space and regions with high values of $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ are identified. It is shown that besides the expected increase of $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ near the Van Hove singularity line, joining the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic points, another region with high values of $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ can be found at quarter filling and ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}=0.5$ due to the presence of a line of nesting at ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\ge}0.5$. The results can serve as benchmarks for controlled nonperturbative methods and guide the ongoing search for high-${T}_{c}$ superconductivity in the Hubbard model.

Pairing symmetry of the one-band Hubbard model in the paramagnetic weak-coupling limit: A numerical RPA study

Astrid Tranum Rømer, Andreas Kreisel, Ilya Eremin +4 more

We study the spin-fluctuation-mediated superconducting pairing gap in a weak-coupling approach to the Hubbard model for a two-dimensional square lattice in the paramagnetic state. Performing a comprehensive theoretical study of the phase diagram as a function of filling, we find that the superconducting gap exhibits transitions from $p$-wave at very low electron fillings to ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$-wave symmetry close to half filling in agreement with previous reports. At intermediate filling levels, different gap symmetries appear as a consequence of the changes in the Fermi surface topology and the associated structure of the spin susceptibility. In particular, the vicinity of a Van Hove singularity in the electronic structure close to the Fermi level has important consequences for the gap structure in favoring the otherwise subdominant triplet solution over the singlet $d$-wave solution. By solving the full gap equation, we find that the energetically favorable triplet solutions are chiral and break time-reversal symmetry. Finally, we also calculate the detailed angular gap structure of the quasiparticle spectrum, and show how spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing leads to significant deviations from the first harmonics both in the singlet ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$ gap as well as the chiral triplet gap solution.

Superfluid ground state phase diagram of the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the emergent Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime

Fedor Šimkovic, Youjin Deng, Evgeny Kozik

In nonperturbative regimes, the superfluid instability in the two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model can be described by an emergent BCS theory with small effective pairing constants. We compute the effective couplings using a controlled bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo approach, which stochastically sums all skeleton Feynman diagrams dressed in the one- and two-particle channels to high expansion orders, and map out the resulting superfluid ground-state phase diagram in a range of next-nearest-neighbor hopping $0\ensuremath{\le}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\le}0.3t$, interaction strength $0\ensuremath{\le}U\ensuremath{\le}3t$, and lattice filling $0\ensuremath{\le}n\ensuremath{\le}2$. The phase diagram is dramatically transformed in the hole-doped region and becomes particularly rich at larger doping and ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$. At ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}=0.3$, the weak-coupling picture with the dominant triplet pairing sharply peaked at $n\ensuremath{\approx}0.73$ due to the Van Hove singularity is replaced by a plateau of the singlet ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$ paring, while for $U\ensuremath{\gtrsim}3t$ the effective couplings are consistent with the ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$ high-temperature superconductivity in the hole-doped region near cuprates' optimal doping.

Superfluid ground-state phase diagram of the $2d$ Hubbard Model in the emergent BCS regime

In non-perturbative regimes, the superfluid instability in the $2d$ Hubbard model can be described by an emergent BCS theory with small effective pairing constants. We compute the effective couplings using a controlled bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo approach, which stochastically sums all skeleton Feynman diagrams dressed in the one- and two-particle channels to high expansion orders, and map out the resulting superfluid ground-state phase diagram in a range of next-nearest-neighbor hopping $0 \leq t^{\prime} \leq 0.3t$, interaction strength $0 \leq U \leq 3t$, and lattice filling $0 \leq n \leq 2$. The phase diagram is dramatically transformed in the hole-doped region and becomes particularly rich at larger doping and $t'$. At $t'=0.3$, the weak-coupling picture with the dominant triplet pairing sharply peaked at $n \approx 0.73$ due to the Van Hove singularity is replaced by a plateau of the singlet $d_{x^2-y^2}$ paring, while for $U \gtrsim 3t$ the effective couplings are consistent with the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ high-temperature superconductivity in the hole-doped region near cuprates' optimal doping.

Superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model: Gutzwiller wave function solution

Jan Kaczmarczyk, Józef Spałek, Tobias Schickling +1 more

A systematic diagrammatic expansion for Gutzwiller-wave functions (DE-GWF) is formulated and used for the description of superconducting (SC) ground state in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with electron-transfer amplitudes $t$ (and ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$) between nearest (and next-nearest) neighbors. The method is numerically very efficient and allows for a detailed analysis of the phase diagram as a function of all relevant parameters ($U$, $\ensuremath{\delta}$, ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$) and a determination of the kinetic-energy driven pairing region. SC states appear only for substantial interactions, $U/t\ensuremath{\gtrsim}3$, and for not too large hole doping, $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.32$ for ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}=0.25t$; this upper critical doping value agrees well with experiment for the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. We also obtain other important features of the SC state: (i) the SC gap at the Fermi surface resembles ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$-wave only around the optimal doping and the corrections to this state are shown to arise from the longer range of the pairing; (ii) the nodal Fermi velocity is almost constant as a function of doping and agrees quantitatively with the experimental results; (iii) the SC transition is driven by the kinetic-energy lowering for low doping and strong interactions.

Global phase diagram of D-wave superconductivity in the square-lattice t-J model

Feng Chen, F. D. M. Haldane, D. N. Sheng

The Hubbard and closely related t-J models are exciting platforms for unconventional superconductivity (SC). Through state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group calculations using the grand canonical ensemble, we address open issues regarding the ground-state phase diagram of the extended t-J model on a square lattice in the parameter regime relevant to cuprate superconductors. On large 8-leg cylinders, we demonstrate that the pure t-J model with only nearest-neighbor hoppings and superexchange interactions, for a wide range of doping ( δ = 0.1 to 0.2 ), hosts robust d-wave superconductivity possibly coexisting with weak unidirectional pair density wave. Furthermore, a small next nearest neighbor hopping t 2 suppresses pair and charge density waves, resulting in a uniform d-wave SC phase in both electron- and hole-doped cuprate model systems. Our work validates the t-J model as a proper minimum model for the emergence of superconductivity in cuprate superconductors.
