Abstract

Using numerical diagonalization techniques, we explore the effect of local and bond disorder on the finite-temperature spin and thermal conductivities of the one-dimensional anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model. High-temperature results for local disorder show that the dc conductivities are finite, apart from the uncorrelated $XY$ case where dc transport vanishes. Moreover, at strong disorder, we find finite dc conductivities at all temperatures $T$ except at $T=0$. The low-frequency conductivities are characterized by a nonanalytic cusp shape. Similar behavior is found for bond disorder.

Incoherent transport induced by a single static impurity in a Heisenberg chain

O. S. Barišić, Peter Prelovšek, Alexandros Metavitsiadis +1 more

The effect of a single static impurity on the many-body states and on the spin and thermal transport in the one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg chain at finite temperatures is studied. Whereas the pure Heisenberg model reveals Poisson level statistics and dissipationless transport due to integrability, we show using the numerical approach that a single impurity induces Wigner-Dyson level statistics and at high enough temperature incoherent transport within the chain, whereby the relaxation time and dc conductivity scale linearly with length.

Transport properties of a spin- 12 Heisenberg chain with an embedded spin- S impurity

Alexandros Metavitsiadis

The finite-temperature transport properties of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ anisotropic Heisenberg chain with an embedded spin-$S$ impurity are studied. Using primarily numerical diagonalization techniques, we study the dependence of the dynamical spin and thermal conductivities on the lattice size, the magnitude of the impurity spin, the host-impurity coupling, the easy axis anisotropy, as well as the dependence on temperature. Particularly for the temperature dependence, we discuss the screening of the impurity by the chain eventually leading to the cutting or healing of the host chain. Numerical results are supported by analytical arguments obtained in the strong host-impurity coupling regime.

Spin and thermal conductivity in a classical disordered spin chain

Boštjan Jenčič, Peter Prelovšek

The transport quantities of a classical spin chain with quenched disorder in antiferromagnetic coupling ${J}_{i}$ are evaluated using a dynamical simulation at finite temperatures $T>0$. Since the classical model is nonintegrable, spin and thermal conductivities remain finite even in the pure case. On the other hand, the role of disorder becomes crucial at low $T$, leading to a vanishing transport due to Anderson localization within the linearized regime. The crossover from the insulator to the conductor appears both for spin and thermal transport at quite low ${T}^{*}\ensuremath{\ll}J$. Still the many-body localization regime at $T>0$ evidenced by extremely short mean free paths can be strongly enhanced by introducing into the model an additional staggered field.

Spin transport of weakly disordered Heisenberg chain at infinite temperature

Ilia Khait, Snir Gazit, Norman Y. Yao +1 more

We study the disordered Heisenberg spin chain, which exhibits many-body localization at strong disorder, in the weak to moderate disorder regime. A continued fraction calculation of dynamical correlations is devised, using a variational extrapolation of recurrents. Good convergence for the infinite chain limit is shown. We find that the local spin correlations decay at long times as $C\ensuremath{\sim}{t}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\beta}}$, whereas the conductivity exhibits a low-frequency power law $\ensuremath{\sigma}\ensuremath{\sim}{\ensuremath{\omega}}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$. The exponents depict subdiffusive behavior $\ensuremath{\beta}<1/2,\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\alpha}>0$ at all finite disorders and convergence to the scaling result $\ensuremath{\alpha}+2\ensuremath{\beta}=1$ at large disorders.

Dephasing-induced diffusive transport in the anisotropic Heisenberg model

Marko Žnidarič

In this work, we study the transport properties of the anisotropic Heisenberg model in a disordered magnetic field and in the presence of dephasing due to external degrees of freedom. Without dephasing, the model can display, depending on parameter values, the whole range of possible transport regimes: ideal ballistic conduction, diffusive, or ideal insulating behavior. We show that the presence of dephasing induces normal diffusive transport in a wide range of parameters. We also analyze the dependence of spin conductivity on the dephasing strength. In addition, by analyzing the decay of the spin–spin correlation function, we find a long-range order for finite chain sizes. All our results for a one-dimensional spin chain at infinite temperature can be equivalently rephrased for strongly interacting disordered spinless fermions.
