Deriving local order parameters from tensor network representations

Abstract

A large class of quantum phase transitions for quantum lattice systems are characterized by local order parameters. It is shown that local order parameters may be systematically constructed from tensor network representations of quantum many-body ground state wave functions by investigating the reduced density matrices for local areas on an infinite-size lattice. Depending on whether or not the system symmetries are spontaneously broken, and whether or not the ground state fidelity per lattice site is continuous, there are four categories of quantum phase transitions for systems with local order parameters. Quantum phase transitions characterized by nonlocal order parameters are discussed, aiming at better understanding quantum systems with topological order.

Quantum phase transitions and bifurcations: reduced fidelity as a phase transition indicator for quantum lattice many-body systems

Jinhua Liu, Qian‐Qian Shi, Jian-Hui Zhao +1 more

We establish an intriguing connection between quantum phase transitions and bifurcations in the reduced fidelity between two different reduced density matrices for quantum lattice many-body systems with symmetry-breaking order. Our finding is based on the observation that in the conventional Landau–Ginzburg–Wilson paradigm a quantum system undergoing a phase transition is characterized in terms of spontaneous symmetry breaking that is captured by a local-order parameter, which in turn results in an essential change of the reduced density matrix in the symmetry-broken phase. Two quantum systems on an infinite lattice in one spatial dimension, i.e. a quantum Ising model in a transverse magnetic field and a quantum spin-1/2 XYX model in an external magnetic field, are considered in the context of the tensor network algorithm based on the matrix product state representation.

2-D Quantum Ising Model Fidelity and Order Parameter

Shenghao Li, Yuanyuan Wu

Abstract This paper explores an interesting relationship between the ground-state fidelity quantum phase transitions and bifurcations per lattice site, and proposes a universal order parameter for the quantum Ising model for a square lattice of infinite-size in two spatial dimensions as a prototype model with symmetry breaking order. The approach is based on computing ground-state wave functions using a tensor network algorithm utilizing a representation with infinite projected entangled-pair states. The results can be applied to any systems with symmetry breaking order, because in the conventional Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm a quantum system subjected to a phase transition exhibits spontaneous symmetry breaking quantified by a local order parameter. A reduced fidelity bifurcation between two different reduced density matrices is also explored.

Bifurcation in ground-state fidelity and universal order parameter for two-dimensional quantum transverse Ising model

Sheng-Hao Li, Honglei Wang, Qian‐Qian Shi +1 more

We establish an intriguing connection between quantum phase transitions and bifurcations in the ground-state fidelity per lattice site, and construct the universal order parameter for quantum Ising model in a transverse magnetic field on an infinite-size square lattice in two spatial dimensions, a prototypical model with symmetry breaking order. This is achieved by computing ground-state wave functions in the context of the tensor network algorithm based on the infinite projected entangled-pair state representation. Our finding is applicable to any systems with symmetry breaking order, as a result of the fact that, in the conventional Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm, a quantum system undergoing a phase transition is characterized in terms of spontaneous symmetry breaking captured by a local order parameter. In addition, a bifurcation in the reduced fidelity between two different reduced density matrices is also discussed.

Universal construction of order parameters for translation-invariant quantum lattice systems with symmetry-breaking order

Jinhua Liu, Qian‐Qian Shi, Honglei Wang +2 more

For any translation-invariant quantum lattice system with a symmetry group G, we propose a practical and universal construction of order parameters which identify quantum phase transitions with symmetry-breaking order. They are defined in terms of the fidelity between a ground state and its symmetry-transformed counterpart, and are computed through tensor network representations of the ground-state wave function. To illustrate our scheme, we consider three quantum systems on an infinite lattice in one spatial dimension, namely, the quantum Ising model in a transverse magnetic field, the quantum spin-1/2XYX model in an external magnetic field, and the quantum spin-1 XXZ model with single-ion anisotropy. All these models have symmetry group Z(2) and exhibit broken-symmetry phases. We also discuss the role of the order parameters in identifying factorized states.

Study on Quantum Phase Transition of 2-D Quantum System by Tensor Network Algorithm

Sheng-Hao Li, Yuanyuan Wu, Fei Xiong

With the deepening of people's understanding of quantum phase transitions, various efficient numerical algorithms have developed rapidly. It is necessary to develop tensor network algorithms to efficiently generate the ground state wave function of quantum many-body system and then calculate the ground state fidelity per site. This mini review article aims to discusses the tensor network algorithm for studying 2-dimensional quantum lattice systems, namely projected entangled pair state, and introduce how to characterize phase transitions in quantum many-body systems from a novel perspective-fidelity. It includes the wave function updating of projected entangled pair state and the tensor network contraction scheme, which can be used to calculate the ground-state fidelity per site of the quantum system, and the phase diagram of the ground-state can be determined without any knowledge of the order of the 2-dimensional quantum system, thus indicating that tensor network algorithms can provide a means to describe quantum phase transitions.

Bifurcation in Ground-state Fidelity and Quantum Criticality in Two-leg Potts Ladder

Sheng-Hao Li, Xiao-Bing WU, Hong-Lei WANG

We have investigated an intriguing connection between bifurcations, reduced fidelity per lattice site, local order parameter, universal order parameter, entropy and quantum phase transitions in the ground state for quantum three-state Potts model with two coupled infinite-size ladder system, in the context of the tensor network algorithm. The tensor network algorithm produces degenerate symmetry-breaking ground-state wave functions arising from the Z3 symmetry breaking, each of results from a randomly chosen initial state. We expect that our approach might provide further insights into critical phenomena in quantum many-body infinite lattice systems in condensed matter physics.
