Anisotropic scattering of Bogoliubov excitations

Abstract

We consider elementary excitations of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in the mean-field framework. As a building block for understanding the dynamics of systems comprising interaction and disorder, we study the scattering of Bogoliubov excitations by a single external impurity potential. A numerical integration of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation shows that the single-scattering amplitude has a marked angular anisotropy. By a saddle point expansion of the hydrodynamic mean-field energy functional, we derive the relevant scattering amplitude including the crossover from sound-like to particle-like excitations. The very different scattering properties of these limiting cases are smoothly connected by an angular envelope function with a well-defined node of vanishing scattering amplitude. We find that the overall scattering is most efficient at the crossover from phonon-like to particle-like Bogoliubov excitations.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in weak anisotropic disorder

Branko Nikolić, Antun Balaž, Axel Pelster

Here we study properties of a homogeneous dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in a weak anisotropic random potential with Lorentzian correlation at zero temperature. To this end we solve perturbatively the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to second order in the random potential strength and obtain analytic results for the disorder ensemble averages of both the condensate and the superfluid depletion, the equation of state, and the sound velocity. For a pure contact interaction and a vanishing correlation length, we reproduce the seminal results of Huang and Meng, which were originally derived within a Bogoliubov theory around a disorder-averaged background field. For dipolar interaction and isotropic Lorentzian-correlated disorder, we obtain results which are qualitatively similar to the case of an isotropic Gaussian-correlated disorder. In the case of an anisotropic disorder, the physical observables show characteristic anisotropies which arise from the formation of fragmented dipolar condensates in the local minima of the disorder potential.

Bogoliubov excitations of disordered Bose-Einstein condensates

Christopher Gaul, Cord Axel Müller

We describe repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensates in spatially correlated disorder potentials of arbitrary dimension. The first effect of disorder is to deform the mean-field condensate. The second is that the quantum excitation spectrum and condensate population are affected. By a saddle-point expansion of the many-body Hamiltonian around the deformed mean-field ground state, we derive the fundamental quadratic Hamiltonian of quantum fluctuations. Importantly, a basis is used such that excitations are orthogonal to the deformed condensate. Via Bogoliubov-Nambu perturbation theory, we compute the effective excitation dispersion, including mean free paths and localization lengths. Corrections to the speed of sound and average density of states are calculated, due to correlated disorder in arbitrary dimensions, extending to the case of weak lattice potentials.

Bogoliubov Theory of Disordered Bose-Einstein Condensates

Christopher Gaul, Cord Axel Müller

We describe interacting bosons at low temperature in spatially correlated random potentials. By a Bogoliubov expansion around the deformed mean-field condensate, the fundamental Hamiltonian for elementary excitations is derived, achieving an analytical formulation in the case of weak disorder. From this, we calculate the sound velocity and true zero-temperature condensate depletion in correlated disorder and all dimensions.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates with weak disorder

Christian Krumnow, Axel Pelster

A homogeneous polarized dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate is considered in the presence of weak quenched disorder within mean-field theory at zero temperature. By first solving perturbatively the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation and then performing disorder ensemble averages for physical observables, it is shown that the anisotropy of the two-particle interaction is passed on to both the superfluid density and the sound velocity.

Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of an elongated condensate throughout a transition from quasi-one-dimensional to three-dimensional

Tao Yang, Andrew Henning, Keith A. Benedict

The quasiparticle excitation spectra of a Bose gas trapped in a highly anisotropic trap is studied with respect to varying total number of particles by numerically solving the effective one-dimensional (1D) Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation proposed recently by Mateo \textit{et al.}. We obtain the static properties and Bogoliubov spectra of the system in the high energy domain. This method is computationally efficient and highly accurate for a condensate system undergoing a 1D to three-dimensional (3D) cigar-shaped transition, as is shown through a comparison our results with both those calculated by the 3D-GP equation and analytical results obtained in limiting cases. We identify the applicable parameter space for the effective 1D-GP equation and find that this equation fails to describe a system with large number of atoms. We also identify that the description of the transition from 1D Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to 3D cigar-shaped BEC using this equation is not smooth, which highlights the fact that for a finite value of $a_\perp/a_s$ the junction between the 1D and 3D crossover is not perfect.

Excitation spectrum of a system of interacting bosons

Moorad Alexanian, R. A. Brito

The Bogoliubov treatment of a weakly interacting Bose gas is extended by allowing macroscopic occupation of many single-particle quantum states. This generalization of having more than a single condensed mode gives rise to a nonuniform condensate and is being considered as a possible mechanism for the description of a dense strongly interacting Bose gas at low temperatures. The model with a repulsive $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function interparticle potential gives an energy spectrum of elementary excitations or quasiparticles with both phonon and roton features. The values obtained for the roton minimum energy $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ and the speed of (first) sound agree reasonably well with inelastic-neutron-scattering data.
