Order Parameter Statistics in the Critical Quantum Ising Chain

Abstract

The probability distribution of the order parameter is expected to take a universal scaling form at a phase transition. In a spin system at a quantum critical point, this corresponds to universal statistics in the distribution of the total magnetization in the low-lying states. We obtain this scaling function exactly for the ground state and first excited state of the critical quantum Ising spin chain. This is achieved through a remarkable relation to the partition function of the anisotropic Kondo problem, which can be computed by exploiting the integrability of the system.

Full counting statistics in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain

Mario Collura, Fabian H. L. Eßler, Stefan Groha

Abstract The spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain exhibits a quantum critical regime characterized by quasi long-range magnetic order at zero temperature. We quantify the strength of quantum fluctuations in the ground state by determining the probability distributions of the components of the (staggered) subsystem magnetization. Some of these exhibit scaling and the corresponding universal scaling functions can be determined by free fermion methods and by exploiting a relation with the boundary sine-Gordon model.

Critical behavior of random transverse-field Ising spin chains

Daniel S. Fisher

A real-space renormalization-group treatment of random transverse-field Ising spin chains that was introduced previously is developed and extensively analyzed. It yields results that are asymptotically exact in the critical region near the zero-temperature para-to-ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. In particular, the exact scaling function is obtained for the magnetization as a function of a uniform applied magnetic field and the distance to the critical point, and up to the solution of a linear ordinary differential equation whose solution can be exhaustively analyzed, the scaling function of the average spin-spin correlation function is also obtained. Thus more exact information is obtainable about the critical behavior for this random model than is known for the pure version which is equivalent to the two-dimensional Ising model. The basic reason for this is the extremely broad distribution of energy scales that occurs at low energies near the critical point of the random system. For the random chain the distribution of the magnetization of the first spin in a semi-infinite system is also studied and the results found to agree in the scaling limit with results of McCoy obtained from the exact solution of the closely related McCoy-Wu Ising model; this provides strong justification for the validity of the present approach. The singular properties of the weakly ordered and weakly disordered ``Griffiths' phases'' that occur at zero temperature near the critical point are also studied, as well as the behavior at low but nonzero temperature. Possible extensions of the results and general lessons drawn from them for other random systems are briefly discussed.

Relaxation of the order-parameter statistics in the Ising quantum chain

Mario Collura

We study the out-of-equilibrium probability distribution function of the local order parameter in the transverse field Ising quantum chain. Starting from a fully polarised state, the relaxation of the ferromagnetic order is analysed: we obtain a full analytical description of the late-time stationary distribution by means of a remarkable relation to the partition function of a 3-states classical model. Accordingly, depending on the phase whereto the post-quench Hamiltonian belongs, the probability distribution may locally retain memories of the initial long-range order. When quenching deep in the broken-symmetry phase, we show that the stationary order-parameter statistics is indeed related to that of the ground state. We highlight this connection by inspecting the ground-state equilibrium properties, where we propose an effective description based on the block-diagonal approximation of the n n -point spin correlation functions.

Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions in Random Spin Chains

Ronen Vosk, Ehud Altman

Using a renormalization group approach, we solve the time evolution of random Ising spin chains with generic interactions starting from initial states of arbitrary energy. As a function of the Hamiltonian parameters, the system is tuned through a dynamical transition, similar to the ground-state critical point, at which the local spin correlations establish true long-range temporal order. In the state with a dominant transverse field, a spin that starts in an up state loses its orientation with time, while in the ``ordered'' state it never does. As in ground-state quantum phase transitions, the dynamical transition has unique signatures in the entanglement properties of the system. When the system is initialized in a product state, the entanglement entropy grows as $\mathrm{log}(t)$ in the two ``phases,'' while at the critical point it grows as ${\mathrm{log}}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}(t)$, with $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ a universal number. This universal entanglement growth requires generic (``integrability breaking'') interactions to be added to the pure transverse field Ising model.

Thermal Ising transitions in the vicinity of two-dimensional quantum critical points

Stephan Heßelmann, Stefan Weßel

The scaling of the transition temperature into an ordered phase close to a quantum critical point as well as the order parameter fluctuations inside the quantum critical region provide valuable information about universal properties of the underlying quantum critical point. Here, we employ quantum Monte Carlo simulations to examine these relations in detail for two-dimensional quantum systems that exhibit a finite-temperature Ising-transition line in the vicinity of a quantum critical point that belongs to the universality class of either (i) the three-dimensional Ising model for the case of the quantum Ising model in a transverse magnetic field on the square lattice or (ii) the chiral Ising transition for the case of a half-filled system of spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice with nearest-neighbor repulsion. While the first case allows large-scale simulations to assess the scaling predictions to a high precision in terms of the known values for the critical exponents at the quantum critical point, for the later case, we extract values of the critical exponents $\ensuremath{\nu}$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}$, related to the order parameter fluctuations, which we discuss in relation to other recent estimates from ground-state quantum Monte Carlo calculations as well as analytical approaches.

Entanglement, quantum phase transition, and scaling in the XXZ chain

Shi-Jian Gu, Hai-Qing Lin, You‐Quan Li

Motivated by recent development in quantum entanglement, we study relations among concurrence C, ${\mathrm{SU}}_{q}(2)$ algebra, quantum phase transition and correlation length at the zero temperature for the $\mathrm{XXZ}$ chain. We find that at the SU(2) point, the ground state possesses the maximum concurrence. When the anisotropic parameter $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ is deformed, however, its value decreases. Its dependence on $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ scales as ${C=C}_{0}\ensuremath{-}{C}_{1}(\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{-}{1)}^{2}$ in the $\mathrm{XY}$ metallic phase and near the critical point (i.e., $1<\ensuremath{\Delta}<1.3)$ of the Ising-like insulating phase. We also study the dependence of C on the correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi},$ and show that it satisfies ${C=C}_{0}\ensuremath{-}1/2\ensuremath{\xi}$ near the critical point. For different sizes of the system, we show that there exists a universal scaling function of C with respect to the correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}.$
