Thermal critical behavior and universality aspects of the three-dimensional random-field Ising model

Anastasios Malakis, Nikolaos G. Fytas

The three-dimensional bimodal random-field Ising model is investigated using the N-fold version of the Wang-Landau algorithm. The essential energy subspaces are determined by the recently developed critical minimum energy subspace technique, and two implementations of this scheme are utilized. The random fields are obtained from a bimodal discrete (±Δ) distribution, and we study the model for various values of the disorder strength Δ, Δ=0.5,1,1.5 and 2, on cubic lattices with linear sizes L=4–24. We extract information for the probability distributions of the specific heat peaks over samples of random fields. This permits us to obtain the phase diagram and present the finite-size behavior of the specific heat. The question of saturation of the specific heat is re-examined and it is shown that the open problem of universality for the random-field Ising model is strongly influenced by the lack of self-averaging of the model. This property appears to be substantially depended on the disorder strength.

Universality of surface critical behavior of the three-dimensional Ising model in a random surface field

K. K. Mon, M. P. Nightingale

The Harris criterion is generalized to determine the relevance at bulk criticality (in the scaling theory sense) of a random ordering field acting at a surface only. For surface critical behavior of the three-dimensional Ising model the criterion predicts the random field to be irrelevant for the ordinary transition, and relevant for the surface-bulk multicritical point. Monte Carlo results for the ordinary transition verify the prediction. Moreover, surface critical behavior near substrates chemically altered in part, as used in a series of experiments by Franck and co-workers, is in the universality class mentioned above, and the value of ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{1}$ found in a random surface experiment [D. J. Durian, and C. Franck, Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 555 (1987)] agrees with the scaling prediction.

Critical behavior of the three-dimensional ±J Ising model at the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition line

Martin Hasenbusch B, Francesco Parisen Toldin, Andrea Pelissetto C +1 more

We study the critical behavior of the three-dimensional $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}J$ Ising model [with random-exchange probability $P({J}_{xy})=p\ensuremath{\delta}({J}_{xy}\ensuremath{-}J)+(1\ensuremath{-}p)\ensuremath{\delta}({J}_{xy}+J)$] at the transition line between the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases, which extends from $p=1$ to a magnetic-glassy multicritical point at $p={p}_{N}\ensuremath{\approx}0.768$. By a finite-size scaling analysis of Monte Carlo simulations at various values of $p$ in the region ${p}_{N}<p<1$, we provide strong numerical evidence that the critical behavior along the ferromagnetic transition line belongs to the same universality class as the three-dimensional randomly dilute Ising model. We obtain the results $\ensuremath{\nu}=0.682(3)$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}=0.036(2)$ for the critical exponents, which are consistent with the estimates $\ensuremath{\nu}=0.683(2)$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}=0.036(1)$ at the transition of randomly dilute Ising models.
