Abstract

We introduce a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation to describe the dynamics of a superfluid Bose gas in the crossover from the weak-coupling regime, where $a{n}^{1/3}\ensuremath{\ll}1$ with $a$ the interatomic $\mathit{s}$-wave scattering length and $n$ the bosonic density, to the unitarity limit, where $a\ensuremath{\rightarrow}+\ensuremath{\infty}$. We call this equation the unitarity Schr\"odinger equation (USE). The zero-temperature bulk equation of state of this USE is parametrized by the Lee-Yang-Huang low-density expansion and Jastrow calculations at unitarity. With the help of the USE we study the profiles of quantized vortices and vortex-core radius in a uniform Bose gas. We also consider quantized vortices in a Bose gas under cylindrically symmetric harmonic confinement and study their profile and chemical potential using the USE and compare the results with those obtained from the Gross-Pitaevskii-type equations valid in the weak-coupling limit. Finally, the USE is applied to calculate the breathing modes of the confined Bose gas as a function of the scattering length.

Vortex lattice in the crossover of a Bose gas from weak coupling to unitarity

S. K. Adhikari, Luca Salasnich

The formation of a regular lattice of quantized vortices in a fluid under rotation is a smoking-gun signature of its superfluid nature. Here we study the vortex lattice in a dilute superfluid gas of bosonic atoms at zero temperature along the crossover from the weak-coupling regime, where the inter-atomic scattering length is very small compared to the average distance between atoms, to the unitarity regime, where the inter-atomic scattering length diverges. This study is based on high-performance numerical simulations of the time-dependent nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the superfluid order parameter in three spatial dimensions, using a realistic analytical expression for the bulk equation of state of the system along the crossover from weak-coupling to unitarity. This equation of state has the correct weak-coupling and unitarity limits and faithfully reproduces the results of an accurate multi-orbital microscopic calculation. Our numerical predictions of the number of vortices and root-mean-square sizes are important benchmarks for future experiments.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We introduce a quasianalytic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with beyond mean-field corrections to describe the dynamics of a zero-temperature dilute superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime, where ${k}_{F}|a|⪡1$ with $a$ the $s$-wave scattering length and ${k}_{F}$ the Fermi momentum, through the unitarity limit ${k}_{F}a\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\infty}$ to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regime where ${k}_{F}a>0$. The energy of our model is parametrized using the known asymptotic behavior in the BCS, BEC, and the unitarity limits and is in excellent agreement with accurate Green's-function Monte Carlo calculations. The model generates good results for frequencies of collective breathing oscillations of a trapped Fermi superfluid.

Superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture from weak coupling to unitarity

Sadhan K. Adhikari, Luca Salasnich

We investigate the zero-temperature properties of a superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture by introducing a set of coupled Galilei-invariant nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations valid from weak coupling to unitarity. The Bose dynamics is described by a Gross-Pitaevskii-type equation including beyond-mean-field corrections possessing the correct weak-coupling and unitarity limits. The dynamics of the two-component Fermi superfluid is described by a density-functional equation including beyond-mean-field terms with correct weak-coupling and unitarity limits. The present set of equations is equivalent to the equations of generalized superfluid hydrodynamics, which take into account also surface effects. The equations describe the mixture properly as the Bose-Bose repulsive (positive) and Fermi-Fermi attractive (negative) scattering lengths are varied from zero to infinity in the presence of a Bose-Fermi interaction. The present model is tested numerically as the Bose-Bose and Fermi-Fermi scattering lengths are varied over wide ranges covering the weak-coupling to unitarity transition.

Unitarity Schrödinger Equation and Ground State Properties of the Finite Trapped Superfluid Fermi Gases in a BCS-BEC Crossover

Zhang Wen-Yuan, Wang Cheng-tao, Ma Yong-Li

On the basis of quantum hydrodynamical equations we derive a unitarity Schrödinger equation of a finite trapped superfluid Fermi gas valid in the whole interaction regime from BCS superfluid to BEC. This equation is just the Ginzburg–Laudau-type equation for the fermionic Cooper pairs in the BCS side, the Gross–Pitaevskii-type equation for the bosonic dimers in the BEC side, and a unitarity equation for a strongly interacting Fermi superfluid in the unitarity limit. By taking a modified Gauss-like trial wave function, we solve the unitarity Schrödinger equation, calculate the energy, chemical potential, sizes and profiles of the ground-state condensate, and discuss the properties of the ground state in the entire BCS-BEC crossover regimes.

Crossover from weak to unitarity-limited interactions in Bose gases

J. J. R. M. van Heugten, Henk T. C. Stoof

We develop an analytical approach for the description of the crossover of an atomic Bose gas from small to infinitely large scattering length where the two-body interactions satisfy the unitarity bound. We obtain several properties of the Bose gas as a function of interaction strength, namely the chemical potential, the contact, the speed of sound, the condensate density, the effective interatomic interaction and the three-body recombination rate. Also, the energy dependence of the effective interaction at unitarity and the evolution of the Feshbach bound state are discussed. It is shown how the approach can be systematically improved with renormalization-group methods and how it reduces to the Bogoliubov theory in the weak-coupling limit.

Dark solitons in a Gross–Pitaevskii equation with a power-law nonlinearity: application to ultracold Fermi gases near the Bose–Einstein condensation regime

D Yan, P. G. Kevrekidis, D. J. Frantzeskakis

In this work, we consider a model of a defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a variable nonlinearity exponent. This is motivated by the study of a superfluid Fermi gas in the Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC)–Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer crossover. In particular, we focus on the relevant mean-field model in the regime from BEC to unitarity and especially consider the modification of the nearly black soliton oscillation frequency due to the variation in the nonlinearity exponent in a harmonic trapping potential. The analytical expressions given as a function of the relevant nonlinearity exponent are corroborated by numerical computations and also extended past the BEC limit.
