Abstract

In the presence of constant background electromagnetic fields, we discuss three types of exactly marginal boundary tachyon operators for static kinks in boundary conformal field theory. Functional forms of three operators are hyperbolic sine, hyperbolic cosine, and exponential types, and they describe codimension-one solitons when the transverse electric field has overcritical value. The energy-momentum tensor and the source for antisymmetric tensor field are computed in the path integral approach for the exponential-type tachyon vertex operator.

Non-relativistic conformal field theory in momentum space

R. K. Gupta, Meenu

Abstract Non-relativistic conformal field theory describes many-body physics at unitarity. The correlation functions of the system are fixed by the requirement of the conformal invariance. In this article, we discuss the correlation functions of scalar operators in non-relativistic conformal field theories in momentum space. We discuss the solution of conformal Ward identities and express 2,3, and 4-point functions as a function of energy and momentum. We also express the 3- and 4-point functions as the one-loop and three-loop Feynman diagram computations in the momentum space. Lastly, we generalize the discussion to the momentum space correlation functions in the presence of a boundary.

Free fermion representation of a boundary conformal field theory

Joseph Polchinski, Lárus Thorlacius A

The theory of a massless two-dimensional scalar field with a periodic boundary interaction is considered. At a critical value of the period this system defines a conformal field theory and can be reexpressed in terms of free fermions, which provide a simple realization of a hidden SU(2) symmetry of the original theory. The partition function and the boundary S matrix can be computed exactly as a function of the strength of the boundary interaction. We first consider open strings with one interacting and one Dirichlet boundary, and then with two interacting boundaries. The latter corresponds to motion in a periodic tachyon background, and the spectrum exhibits an interesting band structure which interpolates between free propagation and tight binding as the interaction strength is varied.

Higher structures on boundary conformal manifolds: Higher Berry phase and boundary conformal field theory

Yichul Choi, Hyunsoo Ha, Dongyeob Kim +3 more

We introduce the notion of higher Berry connection and curvature in the space of conformal boundary conditions in ( 1 + 1 ) d conformal field theories, related to each other by exactly marginal boundary deformations, forming a “boundary conformal manifold.” Our definition builds upon previous works on tensor networks, such as matrix product states, where the triple inner product or multiwavefunction overlap plays a key geometric role. On the one hand, our boundary conformal field theory formulation of higher Berry phase provides a new analytic tool to study families of invertible phases in condensed matter systems. On the other hand, it uncovers a new geometric structure on the moduli space of conformal boundary conditions, beyond the usual Riemannian structure defined through the Zamolodchikov metric. When the boundary conformal manifold has an interpretation as the position moduli space of a D-brane, our higher Berry connection coincides with the Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz (NS-NS) -field in string theory. The general definition does not require such an interpretation and is formulated purely field theoretically, in terms of correlation functions of boundary-condition-changing operators. We also explore a connection between higher Berry connections and functional Berry connections in the loop spaces of boundary conformal manifolds.

Displacement Operators and Constraints on Boundary Central Charges

Christopher P. Herzog, Kuo-Wei Huang, Kristan Jensen

Boundary conformal field theories have several additional terms in the trace anomaly of the stress tensor associated purely with the boundary. We constrain the corresponding boundary central charges in three- and four-dimensional conformal field theories in terms of two- and three-point correlation functions of the displacement operator. We provide a general derivation by comparing the trace anomaly with scale dependent contact terms in the correlation functions. We conjecture a relation between the a-type boundary charge in three dimensions and the stress tensor two-point function near the boundary. We check our results for several free theories.

Non-relativistic conformal field theory in the presence of boundary

Rajesh Kumar Gupta, Ramanpreet Singh

Abstract We study non-relativistic conformal field theory on a flat space in the presence of a planar boundary. We compute correlation functions of primary operators and obtain the expression for the boundary conformal block. We also discuss the non-relativistic conformal field theory on a general curved background in the presence of a boundary. As an example, we discuss the spectrum of boundary primary operator and compute scaling dimensions in a fermionic theory near one and three spatial dimensions.

Holography, entanglement entropy, and conformal field theories with boundaries or defects

Kristan Jensen, Andy O’Bannon

We study entanglement entropy (EE) in conformal field theories (CFTs) in Minkowski space with a planar boundary or with a planar defect of any codimension. In any such boundary CFT or defect CFT (DCFT), we consider the reduced density matrix and associated EE obtained by tracing over the degrees of freedom outside of a (hemi)sphere centered on the boundary or defect. Following Casini, Huerta, and Myers, we map the reduced density matrix to a thermal density matrix of the same theory on hyperbolic space. The EE maps to the thermal entropy of the theory on hyperbolic space. For boundary CFTs and DCFTs dual holographically to Einstein gravity theories, the thermal entropy is equivalent to the Bekenstein--Hawking entropy of a hyperbolic black brane. We show that the horizon of the hyperbolic black brane coincides with the minimal area surface used in Ryu and Takayanagi's conjecture for the holographic calculation of EE. We thus prove their conjecture in these cases. We use our results to compute the R\'enyi entropies and EE in DCFTs in which the defect corresponds to a probe brane in a holographic dual.
