Abstract

We determine the excitation spectrum of a bosonic dipolar quantum gas in a one-dimensional geometry from the dynamical density-density correlation functions simulated by means of reptation quantum Monte Carlo techniques. The excitation energy is always vanishing at the first vector of the reciprocal lattice in the whole crossover from the liquidlike at low density to the quasiordered state at high density, demonstrating the absence of a roton minimum and thus the absence of superfluidity in the Landau sense. Gaps at higher reciprocal-lattice vectors are seen to progressively close with increasing density, while the quantum state evolves into a quasiperiodic structure. The simulational data together with the uncertainty-principle inequality also provide a rigorous proof of the absence of long-range order in such a superstrongly correlated system. Our conclusions confirm that the dipolar gas is in a Luttinger-liquid state and that the Feynman spectrum inferred from the static structure factor yields in most cases an inaccurate description. The connection with ongoing experiments is also discussed.

Evidence of Luttinger-liquid behavior in one-dimensional dipolar quantum gases

R. Citro, E. Orignac, S. De Palo +1 more

A strongly correlated Luttinger-liquid behavior is found to emerge well beyond the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) regime in a one-dimensional Bose gas with dipolar repulsions at $T=0$, persisting for a wide range of densities. After combining reptation quantum Monte Carlo and bosonization techniques, we provide a unifying theory of the underlying crossover physics, evolving from the TG gas at low density into a classical quasiordered state at high density. The density dependent Luttinger parameters extracted from the numerical data provide all that is needed to determine the low-energy behavior from analytical expressions. Our quantitative predictions, in the whole crossover, for measurable quantities such as the structure factor and the momentum distribution, are estimated to be accessible in underway experiments with ultracold polar molecules.

Luttinger hydrodynamics of confined one-dimensional Bose gases with dipolar interactions

R. Citro, S. De Palo, E. Orignac +2 more

Ultracold bosonic and fermionic quantum gases confined to quasi-one-dimensional (1D) geometry are promising candidates for probing fundamental concepts of Luttinger liquid (LL) physics. They can also be exploited for devising applications in quantum information processing and precision measurements. Here, we focus on 1D dipolar Bose gases, where evidence of super-strong coupling behavior has been demonstrated by analyzing the low-energy static and dynamical structures of the fluid at zero temperature by a combined reptation quantum Monte Carlo (RQMC) and bosonization approach. Fingerprints of LL behavior emerge in the whole crossover from the already strongly interacting Tonks–Girardeau at low density to a dipolar density wave regime at high density. We have also shown that a LL framework can be effectively set up and utilized to describe this strongly correlated crossover physics in the case of confined 1D geometries after using the results for the homogeneous system in LL hydrodynamic equations within a local density approximation. This leads to the prediction of observable quantities such as the frequencies of the collective modes of the trapped dipolar gas under the more realistic conditions that could be found in ongoing experiments. The present paper provides a description of the theoretical framework in which the above results have been worked out, making available all the detailed derivations of the hydrodynamic Luttinger equations for the inhomogeneous trapped gas and of the correlation functions for the homogeneous system.

Beyond Mean Field Effects in Quasi-1D Dipolar Bosonic Quantum Gases: Roton Mode and Supersolid Behaviour

S. M. Roccuzzo

In a recent experiment, it has been found that by tuning the interaction strength of a dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensate confined in a quasi-1D geometry orthogonal to the polarization direction, the roton gap vanishes, while density modulations are induced in the trapped gas. This suggests the possibility of realizing a supersolid in dipolar quantum gases. Inspired by this experiment, we simulate a dipolar BEC in a ring geometry by confining the dipoles in a ”tube” orthogonal to the polarization direction and enforcing periodic boundary conditions. Our calculations are based on a Density Functional approach where the total energy density functional includes the beyond-mean-field correction of Lee-Huang-Yang, which partially accounts for quantum fluctuations. We study the ground state properties of the system by evolving in imaginary time the EulerLagrange equation derived from the variational principle. We also study the excitation spectrum of the system by solving the corresponding Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We find that the calculated excitation spectrum shows indeed a roton minimum, and the roton gap can become vanishingly small by reducing the effective scattering length. As the roton gap disappears, we find that the system spontaneously develops in its ground-state a periodic structure formed by denser clusters of atomic dipoles immersed in a dilute superfluid background. We find that this structure shows the hallmarks of a supersolid system, i.e. (i) a finite non-classical translational inertia and (ii) the appearance, besides the phonon mode, of the Nambu-Goldstone gapless mode corresponding to fluctuations in the phase, and related to the spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry.

Collective excitations of trapped one-dimensional dipolar quantum gases

P. Pedri, S. De Palo, E. Orignac +2 more

We calculate the excitation modes of a one-dimensional (1D) dipolar quantum gas confined in a harmonic trap with frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$ and predict how the frequency of the breathing $n=2$ mode characterizes the interaction strength evolving from the Tonks-Girardeau value ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{2}=2{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$ to the quasi-ordered, superstrongly interacting value ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{2}=\sqrt{5}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$. Our predictions are obtained within a hydrodynamic Luttinger-liquid theory after applying the local density approximation to the equation of state for the homogeneous dipolar gas, which are in turn determined from reptation quantum Monte Carlo simulations. They are shown to be in quite accurate agreement with the results of a sum-rule approach. These effects can be observed in current experiments, revealing the Luttinger-liquid nature of 1D dipolar Bose gases.

Low energy quantum regimes of 1D dipolar Hubbard model with correlated hopping

Serena Fazzini, Luca Barbiero, Arianna Montorsi

We apply the bosonization technique to derive the phase diagram of a balanced unit density two-component dipolar Fermi gas in a one dimensional lattice geometry. The considered interaction processes are of the usual contact and dipolar long-range density-density type together with peculiar correlated hopping terms which can be generated dynamically. Rigorous bounds for the transition lines are obtained in the weak coupling regime. In addition to the standard bosonization description, we derive the low energy phase diagram taking place when part of the interaction is embodied non-perturbatively in the single component Hamiltonians. In this case the Luttinger liquid regime is shown to become unstable with respect to the opening of further gapped phases, among which insulating bond ordered wave and Haldane phases, the latter with degenerate edge modes.

One-dimensional gas of bosons with Feshbach-resonant interactions

Victor Gurarie

We present a study of a gas of bosons confined in one dimension with Feshbach-resonant interactions, at zero temperature. Unlike the gas of one-dimensional bosons with non resonant interactions, which is known to be equivalent to a system of interacting spinless fermions and can be described using the Luttinger liquid formalism, the resonant gas possesses additional features. Depending on its parameters, the gas can be in one of three possible regimes. In the simplest of those, it can still be described by the Luttinger liquid theory, but its Fermi momentum cannot be larger than a certain cutoff momentum dependent on the details of the interactions. In the other two regimes, it is equivalent to a Luttinger liquid at low density only. At higher densities its excitation spectrum develops a minimum, similar to the roton minimum in helium, at momenta where the excitations are in resonance with the Fermi sea. As the density of the gas is increased further, the minimum dips below the Fermi energy, thus making the ground state unstable. At this point the standard ground state gets replaced by a more complicated one, where not only the states with momentum below the Fermi points, but also the ones with momentum close to that minimum, get filled, and the excitation spectrum develops several branches. We are unable so far to study this regime in detail due to the lack of the appropriate formalism.
