Abstract

We perform a theoretical analysis of atomic four-wave mixing via a collision of two Bose–Einstein condensates of metastable helium atoms, and compare the results to a recent experiment. We calculate atom–atom pair correlations within the scattering halo produced spontaneously during the collision. We also examine the expected relative number squeezing of atoms on the sphere. The analysis includes first-principles quantum simulations using the positive P -representation method. We develop a unified description of the experimental and simulation results.

We perform first principles quantum simulations of atomic four-wave mixing via a collision of two Bose-Einstein condensates of metastable helium atoms. We analyse the collinear and back-to-back pair correlations of atoms on the s-wave scattering halo. The results provide qualitative and quantitative understanding of the recent experiments at Orsay [A. Perrin et al., arXiv: 0704.3047].

Atom-atom correlations in colliding Bose-Einstein condensates

Magnus Ögren, Karen V. Kheruntsyan

We analyze atom-atom correlations in the $s$-wave scattering halo of two colliding condensates. By developing a simple perturbative approach, we obtain explicit analytic results for the collinear (CL) and back-to-back (BB) correlations corresponding to realistic density profiles of the colliding condensates with interactions. The results in the short-time limit are in agreement with the first-principles simulations using the positive-$P$ representation and provide analytic insights into the experimental observations of Perrin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 150405 (2007)]. For long collision durations, we predict that the BB correlation becomes broader than the CL correlation.

Spontaneous Four-Wave Mixing of de Broglie Waves: Beyond Optics

Valentina Krachmalnicoff, Jean-Christophe Jaskula, Marie Bonneau +8 more

We investigate the atom-optical analog of degenerate four-wave mixing by colliding two Bose-Einstein condensates of metastable helium. The momentum distribution of the scattered atoms is measured in three dimensions. A simple analogy with photon phase matching conditions suggests a spherical final distribution. We find, however, that it is an ellipsoid with radii smaller than the initial collision momenta. Numerical and analytical calculations agree with this and reveal the interplay between many-body effects, mean-field interaction, and the anisotropy of the source condensate.

Properties of atomic pairs produced in the collision of Bose-Einstein condensates

Paweł Zin, Tomasz Wasak

During a collision of Bose-Einstein condensates correlated pairs of atoms are emitted. The scattered massive particles, in analogy to photon pairs in quantum optics, might be used in the violation of Bell's inequalities, demonstration of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations, or sub-shot-noise atomic interferometry. Usually, a theoretical description of the collision relies either on stochastic numerical methods or on analytical treatments involving various approximations. Here, we investigate elastic scattering of atoms from colliding elongated Bose-Einstein condensates within the Bogoliubov method, carefully controlling performed approximations at every stage of the analysis. We derive expressions for the one- and two-particle correlation functions. The obtained formulas, which relate the correlation functions to the condensate wave function, are convenient for numerical calculations. We employ the variational approach for condensate wave functions to obtain analytical expressions for the correlation functions, whose properties we analyze in detail. We also present a useful semiclassical model of the process and compare its results with the quantum one. The results are relevant for recent experiments with excited helium atoms, as well as for planned experiments aimed at investigating the nonclassicality of the system.

Pair correlations of scattered atoms from two colliding Bose-Einstein condensates: Perturbative approach

Jan Chwedeńczuk, Paweł Zin, Marek Trippenbach +4 more

We apply an analytical model for anisotropic, colliding Bose-Einstein condensates in a spontaneous four-wave-mixing geometry to evaluate the second-order correlation function of the field of scattered atoms. Our approach uses quantized scattering modes and the equivalent of a classical, undepleted pump approximation. Results to lowest order in perturbation theory are compared with a recent experiment and with other theoretical approaches.

Sub-Poissonian Number Differences in Four-Wave Mixing of Matter Waves

Jean-Christophe Jaskula, Marie Bonneau, Guthrie B. Partridge +6 more

We demonstrate sub-Poissonian number differences in four-wave mixing of Bose-Einstein condensates of metastable helium. The collision between two Bose-Einstein condensates produces a scattering halo populated by pairs of atoms of opposing velocities, which we divide into several symmetric zones. We show that the atom number difference for opposing zones has sub-Poissonian noise fluctuations, whereas that of nonopposing zones is well described by shot noise. The atom pairs produced in a dual number state are well adapted to sub-shot-noise interferometry and studies of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-type nonlocality tests.
