Integrability, Stability, and Adiabaticity in Nonlinear Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage

Abstract

We study the dynamics of a two-color photoassociation of atoms into diatomic molecules via nonlinear stimulated Raman adiabatic passage process. The system has a famous counterpart in (linear) quantum mechanics, and has been discussed recently in the context of generalizing the quantum adiabatic theorem to nonlinear systems. Here we use another approach to study adiabaticity and stability in the system: we apply methods of classical Hamiltonian dynamics. We find nonlinear dynamical instabilities, cases of complete integrability, and improved conditions of adiabaticity.

Bose-Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage in Photoassociation

Matt Mackie, Ryan Kowalski, Juha Javanainen

We analyze coherent two-color photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate, focusing on stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) in free-bound-bound transitions from atoms to molecules. This problem raises an interest because STIRAP has been predicted to be absent in the nondegenerate case [Javanainen and Mackie, Phys. Rev. A 58, R789 (1998)]. Nevertheless, we find that Bose stimulation enhances the free-bound dipole matrix element for an atomic condensate, and photoassociative STIRAP turns out to be a viable mechanism for converting an atomic condensate to a molecular condensate with near-unit efficiency.

DYNAMICS OF ULTRACOLD ATOM-MOLECULE CONVERSION:THE STIMULATED RAMAN ADIABATIC PASSAGE

Meng Shao-ying

The generation of ultracold molecules has been a hot topic in cold atom-molecule physics. It is difficult to obtain ultracold molecules with laser cooling as in the atomic system, because there are more degrees of freedom in molecules, and the level structure is denser and more complicated. For the time being, the ultracold molecules are generally generated from the ultracold atoms coupled by the external fields. The stimulated Raman adiabatic passage process(STIRAP) as an effective method of generating ultracold molecules from its atomic counterparts has been widely studied. In this article,we mainly focus on the recent research progress of dynamics, adiabaticity and instability of the dark state in the atom-molecule STIRAP.

Linear instability and adiabaticity of a dark state during conversion of two species of fermionic atoms to stable molecules

Shao-Ying Meng, Xihao Chen, Wei Wu +1 more

In the present paper, we investigate the linear instability and adiabaticity of a dark state during conversion of two species of fermionic atoms to stable molecules through the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage aided by Feshbach resonance. We analytically obtain the regions for the appearance of linear instability. Moreover, taking 40 K and 6 Li atom—molecule conversion systems as examples, we give the unstable regions numerically. We also attempt to obtain the adiabatic criterion for this nonlinear system with classical adiabatic dynamics and study the adibaticity of the dark state with the adiabatic condition.

Adiabatic theorem for a condensate system in an atom-molecule dark state

Hong Yuan Ling, P. Maenner, Weiping Zhang +1 more

We consider the adiabatic evolution of an atom-molecule dark state in a collisional two-color Raman photoassociation condensate system. By linking nonadiabaticity with the population growth in the collective excitations of the dark state, we develop an adiabatic theorem where we have consistently addressed the issues related to the Goldstone mode and the biorthonormality of the collective modes. We apply this theorem to specific examples to demonstrate its use in designing pulses that can optimize the yield of ground molecule production in the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage process.

Adiabatic Condition for Nonlinear Systems

Han Pu, P. Maenner, Weiping Zhang +1 more

The adiabatic approximation is an important concept in quantum mechanics. In linear systems, the adiabatic condition is derived with the help of the instantaneous eigenvalues and eigenstates of the Hamiltonian, a procedure that breaks down in the presence of nonlinearity. Using an explicit example relevant to photoassociation of atoms into diatomic molecules, we demonstrate that the proper way to derive the adiabatic condition for nonlinear mean-field (or classical) systems is through a linearization procedure, using which an analytic adiabatic condition is obtained for the nonlinear model under study.

Stability, Adiabaticity and Transfer efficiency in a nonlinear Λ-system

Ning Jia, Jing Qian, Guangjiong Dong +1 more

We investigate the relationship between stability, adiabaticity and transfer efficiency in a \Lambda-type atom-molecule coupling system via a nonlinear stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. We find that only when the pump and control lasers overlap in time domain, the coherent population trapping (CPT) state could become unstable. If the overlapping time of the two lasers is short so that unstable growth of the deviation from the CPT state is negligible, then good adiabaticity of the CPT state could be maintained even in the unstable region. In this case, a high atom-molecule transfer efficiency could be obtained by chirping applied laser pulses to elegantly compensate the frequency shift induced by intra-atomic collision. Our results could be useful for efficiently photoassociating ground-state molecules from a cold atomic gas with strong atom-atom collisional interaction.
