Threshold Singularities in the Dynamic Response of Gapless Integrable Models

Abstract

We develop a method of an asymptotically exact treatment of threshold singularities in dynamic response functions of gapless integrable models. The method utilizes the integrability to recast the original problem in terms of the low-energy properties of a certain deformed Hamiltonian. The deformed Hamiltonian is local; hence, it can be analyzed using the conventional field theory methods. We apply the technique to spinless fermions on a lattice with nearest-neighbors repulsion, and evaluate the exponent characterizing the threshold singularity in the dynamic structure factor.

Form factor approach to dynamical correlation functions in critical models

N Kitanine, Karol Kajetan Kozlowski, Jean Michel Maillet +2 more

We develop a form factor approach to the study of dynamical correlation functions of quantum integrable models in the critical regime. As an example, we consider the quantum non-linear Schrödinger model. We derive the long-distance/long-time asymptotic behavior of various two-point functions of this model. We also compute edge exponents and amplitudes characterizing the power-law behavior of dynamical response functions on the particle–hole excitation thresholds. These last results confirm predictions based on the non-linear Luttinger liquid method. Our results rely on a first principles derivation, based on a microscopic analysis of the model, without invoking, at any stage, any correspondence with a continuous field theory. Furthermore, our approach only makes use of certain general properties of the model, so that it should be applicable, possibly with minor modifications, to a wide class of (not necessarily integrable) gapless one-dimensional Hamiltonians.

On singularities of dynamic response functions in the massless regime of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain

Karol Kajetan Kozlowski

This work extracts, by means of an exact analysis, the singular behavior of the dynamical response functions—the Fourier transforms of dynamical two-point functions—in the vicinity of the various excitation thresholds in the massless regime of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain. The analysis yields the edge exponents and associated amplitudes that describe the local behavior of the response function near a threshold. The singular behavior is derived starting from first principles considerations: the method of analysis does not rely, at any stage, on some hypothetical correspondence with a field theory or other phenomenological approaches. The analysis builds on the massless form factor expansion for the response functions of the XXZ chain obtained recently by the author. It confirms the non-linear Luttinger based predictions relative to the power-law behavior and of the associated edge exponents that arise in the vicinity of the dispersion relation of one massive excitation (hole, particle, or bound state). In addition, the present analysis shows that due to the lack of strict convexity of the particle dispersion relation and due to the presence of slow velocity branches of the bound states, there exist excitation thresholds with a different structure of edge exponents. These originate from multi-particle/hole/bound state excitations maximizing the energy at fixed momentum.

Phenomenology of One-Dimensional Quantum Liquids Beyond the Low-Energy Limit

Adilet Imambekov, L. I. Glazman

We consider the zero temperature behavior of dynamic response functions of 1D systems near edges of support in the momentum-energy plane (k,omega). The description of the singularities of dynamic response functions near an edge epsilon(k) is given by the effective Hamiltonian of a mobile impurity moving in a Luttinger liquid. For Galilean-invariant systems, we relate the parameters of such an effective Hamiltonian to the properties of the function epsilon(k). This allows us to express the exponents which characterize singular response functions of spinless bosonic or fermionic liquids in terms of epsilon(k) and Luttinger liquid parameters for any k. For an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain in a zero magnetic field, SU(2) invariance fixes the exponents from purely phenomenological considerations.

Fate of 1D Spin-Charge Separation Away from Fermi Points

Thomas L. Schmidt, Adilet Imambekov, L. I. Glazman

We consider the dynamic response functions of interacting one dimensional spin-1/2 fermions at arbitrary momenta. We build a nonperturbative zero-temperature theory of the threshold singularities using mobile impurity Hamiltonians. The interaction induced low-energy spin-charge separation and power-law threshold singularities survive away from Fermi points. We express the threshold exponents in terms of the spinon spectrum.

Edge exponent in the dynamic spin structure factor of the Yang-Gaudin model

Mikhail B. Zvonarev, Vadim Cheianov, Thierry Giamarchi

The dynamic spin structure factor $\mathcal{S}(k,\ensuremath{\omega})$ of a system of spin-1/2 bosons is investigated at arbitrary strength of the interparticle repulsion. As a function of $\ensuremath{\omega}$ it is shown to exhibit a power-law singularity at the threshold frequency defined by the energy of a magnon at given $k$. The power-law exponent is found exactly using a combination of the Bethe ansatz solution and an effective-field theory approach.

Spin-charge separation in one-dimensional fermion systems beyond Luttinger liquid theory

Thomas L. Schmidt, Adilet Imambekov, L. I. Glazman

We develop a nonperturbative zero-temperature theory for the dynamic response functions of interacting one-dimensional spin-1/2 fermions. In contrast to the conventional Luttinger liquid theory, we take into account the nonlinearity of the fermion dispersion exactly. We calculate the power-law singularities of the spectral function and the charge- and spin-density structure factors for arbitrary momenta and interaction strengths. The exponents characterizing the singularities are functions of momenta and differ significantly from the predictions of the linear Luttinger liquid theory. We generalize the notion of the spin-charge separation to the nonlinear spectrum. This generalization leads to phenomenological relations between threshold exponents and the threshold energy.
