Generating dark solitons by single photons

Abstract

We show that dark solitons in 1D bose systems may be excited by resonant absorption of single quanta of an external ac field. The energy of the quantum $\hbarω$ should be slightly blue-detuned from the energy of a soliton with momentum $\hbar q$, where $q$ is the external field wavenumber $q$. We calculate the absorption cross-section and show that it has power-law dependence on the frequency detuning. This reflects the quantum nature of the absorption process and the orthogonality catastrophe phenomenon associated with it.

Photosolitonic effect

Maxim Khodas, Alex Kamenev, L. I. Glazman

We show that dark solitons in one-dimensional Bose liquids may be created by absorption of a single quanta of an external ac field, in a close analogy with the Einstein's photoelectric effect. Similarly to the von Lenard's experiment with photoexcited electrons, the external field's photon energy $\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}$ should exceed a certain threshold. In our case the latter is given by the soliton energy ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{s}(\ensuremath{\hbar}q)$ with the momentum $\ensuremath{\hbar}q$, where $q$ is photon's wave number. We find the probability of soliton creation to have a power-law dependence on the frequency detuning $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{s}∕\ensuremath{\hbar}$. This dependence is a signature of the quantum nature of the absorption process and the orthogonality catastrophe phenomenon associated with it.

Quantum Dark Solitons in the 1D Bose Gas: From Single to Double Dark-Solitons

Kayo Kinjo, Eriko Kaminishi, Takashi Mori +3 more

We study quantum double dark-solitons, which give pairs of notches in the density profiles, by constructing corresponding quantum states in the Lieb–Liniger model for the one-dimensional Bose gas. Here, we expect that the Gross–Pitaevskii (GP) equation should play a central role in the long distance mean-field behavior of the 1D Bose gas. We first introduce novel quantum states of a single dark soliton with a nonzero winding number. We show them by exactly evaluating not only the density profile but also the profiles of the square amplitude and phase of the matrix element of the field operator between the N-particle and (N−1)-particle states. For elliptic double dark-solitons, the density and phase profiles of the corresponding states almost perfectly agree with those of the classical solutions, respectively, in the weak coupling regime. We then show that the scheme of the mean-field product state is quite effective for the quantum states of double dark solitons. Assigning the ideal Gaussian weights to a sum of the excited states with two particle-hole excitations, we obtain double dark-solitons of distinct narrow notches with different depths. We suggest that the mean-field product state should be well approximated by the ideal Gaussian weighted sum of the low excited states with a pair of particle-hole excitations. The results of double dark-solitons should be fundamental and useful for constructing quantum multiple dark-solitons.

Quantum reflection of dark solitons scattered by reflectionless potential barrier and position-dependent dispersion

L. Al Sakkaf, T. Uthayakumar, Usama Al Khawaja

We investigate theoretically and numerically quantum reflection of dark solitons propagating through an external reflectionless potential barrier or in the presence of a position-dependent dispersion. We confirm that quantum reflection occurs in both cases with sharp transition between complete reflection and complete transmission at a critical initial soliton speed. The critical speed is calculated numerically and analytically in terms of the soliton and potential parameters. Analytical expressions for the critical speed were derived using the exact trapped mode, a time-independent, and a time-dependent variational calculations. It is then shown that resonant scattering occurs at the critical speed, where the energy of the incoming soliton is resonant with that of a trapped mode. Reasonable agreement between analytical and numerical values for the critical speed is obtained as long as a periodic multi-soliton ejection regime is avoided.

Matter-wave dark solitons in boxlike traps

Michele Sciacca, Carlo F. Barenghi, Nicholas G. Parker

Motivated by the experimental development of quasihomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates confined in boxlike traps, we study numerically the dynamics of dark solitons in such traps at zero temperature. We consider the cases where the side walls of the box potential rise either as a power law or a Gaussian. While the soliton propagates through the homogeneous interior of the box without dissipation, it typically dissipates energy during a reflection from a wall through the emission of sound waves, causing a slight increase in the soliton's speed. We characterize this energy loss as a function of the wall parameters. Moreover, over multiple oscillations and reflections in the boxlike trap, the energy loss and speed increase of the soliton can be significant, although the decay eventually becomes stabilized when the soliton equilibrates with the ambient sound field.

On creation and evolution of dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Valeriy A. Brazhnyi, A. M. Kamchatnov, V. V. Konotop

Generation of dark solitons from large initial excitations and their evolution in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate trapped by a harmonic potential is studied analytically and numerically. In the case of a single deep soliton main characteristics of its motion such as a frequency and amplitude of oscillations are calculated by means of the perturbation theory which in the leading order results in a Newtonian dynamics, corrections to which are computed as well. It is shown that long-time dynamics of a dark soliton in a generic situation deviates substantially from outcomes of the naive application of the Ehrenfest theorem. We also consider three different techniques of controllable creation of multi-soliton structures (soliton trains) from large initial excitations and calculate their initial parameters (depths and velocities) with the use of a generalized Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule. Multi-soliton effects are discussed.

Generation of Dark Solitons Assisted by Quantum Tunneling

Chaohong Lee, Elena A. Ostrovskaya, Yuri S. Kivshar

We investigate the {\em nonlinearity-assisted quantum tunneling} and formation of nonlinear collective excitations in a matter-wave interferometer, which is realised by the adiabatic transformation of a double-well potential into a single-well harmonic trap. In contrast to the linear quantum tunneling induced by the crossing (or avoided crossing) of neighbouring energy levels, the quantum tunneling between different nonlinear eigenstates is assisted by the nonlinear mean-field interaction. When the barrier between the wells decreases, the mean-field interaction aids quantum tunneling between the ground and excited nonlinear eigenstates. The resulting {\em non-adiabatic evolution} depends on the input states. The tunneling process leads to the generation of dark solitons, and the number of the generated dark solitons is highly sensitive to the matter-wave nonlinearity. The results of the numerical simulations of the matter-wave dynamics are successfully interpreted with a coupled-mode theory for multiple nonlinear eigenstates.
