Spin dynamics with non-Abelian Berry gauge fields as a semiclassical constrained Hamiltonian system

Abstract

The dynamics of observables which are matrices depending on ℏ and taking values in classical phase-space is defined by retaining the terms up to the first order in ℏ of the Moyal bracket. Within this semiclassical approach a first-order Lagrangian involving gauge fields is studied as a constrained Hamiltonian system. This provides a systematic study of spin dynamics in the presence of non-Abelian Berry gauge fields. We applied the method to various types of dynamical spin systems and clarified some persisting discussions. In particular employing the Berry gauge field which generates the Thomas precession, we calculated the force exerted on an electron in the external electric and magnetic fields. Moreover, a simple semiclassical formulation of the spin Hall effect is accomplished.

Semiclassical Diagonalization of Quantum Hamiltonian and Equations of Motion with Berry Phase Corrections

Pierre Gosselin, Alain Bérard, Hervé Mohrbach

It has been recently found that the equations of motion of several semiclassical systems must take into account terms arising from Berry phases contributions. Those terms are responsible for the spin Hall effect in semiconductor as well as the Magnus effect of light propagating in inhomogeneous media. Intensive ongoing research on this subject seems to indicate that a broad class of quantum systems may be affected by Berry phase terms. It is therefore important to find a general procedure allowing for the determination of semiclassical Hamiltonian with Berry Phase corrections. This article presents a general diagonalization method at order $\\hbar $ for a large class of quantum Hamiltonians directly inducing Berry phase corrections. As a consequence, Berry phase terms on both coordinates and momentum operators naturally arise during the diagonalization procedure. This leads to new equations of motion for a wide class of semiclassical system. As physical applications we consider here a Dirac particle in an electromagnetic or static gravitational field, and the propagation of a Bloch electrons in an external electromagnetic field.

Berry phases for quadratic spin Hamiltonians taken from atomic and solid state physics: examples of Abelian gauge fields not connected to physical particles

Claude C. Bouchiat

This paper contains an evaluation of the Berry phases associated with the following class of nonlinear spin Hamiltonians : H (B, n ) = γS S · B + γQ((S · n) 2 - S2/3), with B · n = 0. Examples of these Hamiltonians are given in Atomic and Solid State Physics. We compute exactly the Berry phases for S = 1, 3/2 and for S > 3/2, to second order with respect to the ratio γQ/(γS B ). The results involve loop integrals of an Abelian gauge field which can be considered as a generalization of the magnetic monopole field, the projective complex plane P2(C) playing the role of the sphere S2. In the case of the spin-1 the relation between the Aharonov and Anandan cyclic quantum phase and the Berry adiabatic phase is made explicit. The connection between the semiclassical limit of the Berry phase and the classical adiabatic Hannay angle is analyzed using the classical spin model recently proposed by Nielsen and Rohrlich.

Effective dynamics for a spin-1/2 particle constrained to a space curve in an electric and magnetic field

Guo-Hua Liang, Yong-Long Wang, Meng-Yun Lai +3 more

We consider the dynamics of a spin-1/2 particle constrained to move in an arbitrary space curve with an external electric and magnetic field applied. With the aid of gauge theory, we successfully decouple the tangential and normal dynamics and derive the effective Hamiltonian. A type of quantum potential called SU(2) Zeeman interaction appears, which is induced by the electric field and couples spin and intrinsic orbital angular momentum. Based on the Hamiltonian, we discuss the spin precession for the zero intrinsic orbital angular momentum case and the energy splitting caused by the SU(2) Zeeman interaction for a helix as examples, showing the combined effect of geometry and external field. The interaction may bring different approaches to manipulate quantum states in spintronics.

Dynamics of dipoles and quantum phases in noncommutative coordinates

Ö. F. Dayi

The dynamics of a spin-(1/2) neutral particle possessing electric- and magnetic-dipole moments interacting with external electric and magnetic fields in noncommutative coordinates is obtained. Noncommutativity of space is interposed in terms of a semiclassical constrained Hamiltonian system. The relation between the quantum phase acquired by a particle interacting with an electromagnetic field and the (semi)classical force acting on the system is examined and generalized to establish a formulation of the quantum phases in noncommutative coordinates. The general formalism is applied to physical systems yielding the Aharonov-Bohm, Aharonov-Casher, He-McKellar-Wilkens and Anandan phases in noncommutative coordinates. Bounds for the noncommutativity parameter θ are derived comparing the deformed phases with the experimental data on the Aharonov-Bohm and Aharonov-Casher phases.

Quantum Hamiltonian diagonalization and Equations of Motion with Berry Phase Corrections

Pierre Gosselin, Alain Bérard, Hervé Mohrbach

It has been recently found that the equations of motion of several semiclassical systems must take into account anomalous velocity terms arising from Berry phase contributions. Those terms are for instance responsible for the spin Hall effect in semiconductors or the gravitational birefringence of photons propagating in a static gravitational field. Intensive ongoing research on this subject seems to indicate that actually a broad class of quantum systems might have their dynamics affected by Berry phase terms. In this article we review the implication of a new diagonalization method for generic matrix valued Hamiltonians based on a formal expansion in power of $\hbar$. In this approach both the diagonal energy operator and dynamical operators which depend on Berry phase terms and thus form a noncommutative algebra, can be expanded in power series in \hbar $. Focusing on the semiclassical approximation, we will see that a large class of quantum systems, ranging from relativistic Dirac particles in strong external fields to Bloch electrons in solids have their dynamics radically modified by Berry terms.
