Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate that paired photons generated in different sections of a down-conversion cone, when some of the interacting waves show Poynting vector walk-off, carry different spatial correlations, and therefore a different degree of spatial entanglement. This is shown to be in agreement with theoretical results. We also discuss how this azimuthal distinguishing information of the down-conversion cone is relevant for the implementation of quantum sources aimed at the generation of entanglement in other degrees of freedom, such as polarization.

The orbital angular momentum spectrum of photons generated via parametric down-conversion

Clara I. Osorio, Gabriel Molina‐Terriza, Juan P. Torres

The generation of paired photons entangled in orbital angular momentum (OAM), provides a new degree of freedom that is increasingly being used as a source of quantum states. Elucidation of the OAM spectrum of OAM spectrum of the generated photons is of paramount importance, since quantum information applications require the ability to generate arbitrary entangled states with the appropriate OAM correlations. Here we discuss the OAM spectrum of the photon generated via SPDC in two complementary scenarios. On one hand, we should consider the whole geometry of the nonlinear process, taking into account azimuthal variations of the nonlinear coefficient or the phase matching conditions. On the other hand, all relevant experiments reported to date detect only a small section of the full down-conversion cone. In this scenario, the measured OAM correlations depend of the emission angle of the photons and the strength of the Poynting vector walk-off. We will present experiments in SPDC where this dependence is clearly revealed.

Orbital Angular Momentum Correlations in Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion

Clara I. Osorio, Gabriel Molina‐Terriza, Juan P. Torres

We show that the orbital angular momentum (OAM) correlations, and the amount of spatial entanglement, of paired photons generated in spontaneous parametric downconver- sion are strongly affected by the use of noncollinear configurations and by the presence of Poynting vector walk-off. We discuss how our results are related to the question of the conservation of OAM in a nonlinear optics process, and we derive selection rules that allow to determine the sought-after OAM correlations, especially for those configurations used in current quantum information experiments.

The spatial shape of entangled photon states generated in non-collinear, walking parametric downconversion

Juan P. Torres, Gabriel Molina‐Terriza, Lluís Torner

We address the spatial shape of entangled photon states generated in spontaneous parametric downconversion in non-collinear geometries, when the interacting waves exhibit Poynting vector walk-off. We discuss how such shape depends on the interplay between the state ellipticity caused by the non-collinear geometry, and the Poynting vector walk-off. In particular, we study the impact of the new features exhibited by walking entangled photons on the implementation of quantum protocols based on the spiral spectra of the entangled photons.

Spatiotemporal correlations in entangled photons generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion

Clara I. Osorio, Alejandra Valencia, Juan P Torres

In most configurations aimed at generating entangled photons based on spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), the generated pairs of photons are required to be entangled in only one degree of freedom. Any distinguishing information coming from the other degrees of freedom that characterize the photon should be suppressed to avoid correlations with the degree of freedom of interest. However, this suppression is not always possible. Here, we show how the frequency information available affects the purity of the two-photon state in space, revealing a correlation between the frequency and the space degrees of freedom. This correlation should be taken into account to calculate the total amount of entanglement between the photons.

Spatially entangled photon-pair generation using a partial spatially coherent pump beam

Hugo Defienne, Sylvain Gigan

We demonstrate experimental generation of spatially entangled photon pairs by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) using a partial spatially coherent pump beam. By varying the spatial coherence of the pump, we show its influence on the down-converted photon's spatial correlations and on its degree of entanglement, in excellent agreement with theory. We then exploit this property to produce pairs of photons with a specific degree of entanglement by tailoring of the pump coherence length. This work thus unravels the fundamental transfer of coherence occurring in SPDC processes, and provides a simple experimental scheme to generate photon pairs with a well-defined degree of spatial entanglement, which may be useful for quantum communication and information processing.

Azimuthal correlation of photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Vygandas Jarutis, Saulius Juodkazis, Vygantas Mizeikis +1 more

Correlations between the entire conical spatial modes of signal and idler beams in a type II spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) under ultrashort pulse pumping are examined experimentally and theoretically. Statistical properties and theoretical analysis of ``path-entangled'' states formed using these beams suggest that the quantum state of SPDC photon pairs cannot be represented by a pure ensemble of identically prepared pairs.
