Abstract

The paper first discusses theoretically the off-resonance selective excitation method that is dependent on the atomic internal states and used to generate approximately a standard coherent state of harmonic oscillator. The coherent average method then is proposed to construct the state-selective trigger pulse. A state-selective trigger pulse can keep Gaussian shape unchanged but change in an internal-state-dependent form the center-of-mass position and/or momentum of an atomic Gaussian wave-packet motional state. A Gaussian wave-packet state is one of the simplest wave-packet states that can be easily manipulated and controlled in time and space. The paper also investigates how to manipulate in time and space an atomic Gaussian wave-packet motional state by a generalized quadratic potential field. A general quadratic Hamiltonian can affect not only the center-of-mass position and momentum but also the complex linewidth of a Gaussian wave-packet motional state while keep Gaussian shape of the motional state unchanged. It is shown that generally quadratic terms of a quadratic Hamiltonian can control directly the complex linewidth, while linear terms of a quadratic Hamiltonian can affect only the center-of-mass position and momentum of a Gaussian wave-packet motional state.

Invariant operators for quadratic Hamiltonians

Mark Andrews

The motion of wave packets can be easily determined for any Hamiltonian that is quadratic in position and momentum, even if the coefficients of the terms in the Hamiltonian vary with time. The method is based on the existence of an invariant operator, linear in position and momentum, the coefficients of these operators being solutions of the corresponding classical system. This immediately yields a set of very simple wave packets whose evolution is easily determined, and whose magnitude has the same form as the energy eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator (i.e., Gaussian or Hermite–Gaussian). This set provides a complete basis for finding the evolution of any state and the exact propagator is readily determined. For the harmonic oscillator, this set includes coherent states, squeezed states, displaced number states, and squeezed number states as special cases. The following important properties hold for every quadratic Hamiltonian, no matter what time dependence is present in the Hamiltonian: (1) The motion of the centroid of any wave packet separates from that of any moments relative to the centroid. (2) Every detail of the evolution of the quantum system can be calculated from the solutions of the corresponding classical system. (3) Wave functions of Gaussian (or Hermite–Gaussian) form will retain that form as they evolve.

Quantum theory of a non-Hermitian time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator having 𝒫𝒯 symmetry

I. A. Pedrosa, B. F. Ramos, K. Bakke +1 more

We discuss the quantum theory of an harmonic oscillator with time-dependent mass and frequency submitted to action of a complex time-dependent linear potential with [Formula: see text] symmetry. Combining the Lewis and Riesenfeld approach to time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians having [Formula: see text] symmetry and linear invariants, we solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for this problem and use the corresponding quantum states to construct a Gaussian wave packet solution. We show that the shape of this wave packet does not depend on the driving force. Afterwards, using this wave packet state, we calculate the expectation values of the position and momentum, their fluctuations and the associated uncertainty product. We find that these expectation values are complex numbers and as a consequence the position and momentum operators are not physical observables and the uncertainty product is physically unacceptable.

Time behavior of a Gaussian wave packet accompanying the generalized coherent state for the inverted oscillator

Mustapha Maamache, Yacine Bouguerra, Jeong Ryeol Choi

A Gaussian wave packet of the inverted oscillator is investigated using the invariant operator method together with the unitary transformation method. A simple wave packet directly derived from the eigenstates of the invariant operator of the system corresponds to a plane wave that is fully delocalized. However, we can construct a weighted wave packet in terms of such plane waves, which corresponds to a Gaussian wave. This wave packet is associated with the generalized coherent state, which can be crucially utilized for investigating the classical limit of quantum wave mechanics. Various quantum properties of the system, such as fluctuations of the canonical variables, the uncertainty product, and the motion of the wave packet or quantum particle, are analyzed by means of this wave packet. We have confirmed that the time behavior of such a wave packet is very similar to the counterpart classical state. The wave packet runs away from the origin in the positive or negative direction in the 1D coordinate depending on the condition of the initial state. We have confirmed that this wave packet not only moves acceleratively but also spreads out during its propagation.

Wave Packet Motion in Harmonic Potential

Hideo Tsuru

A motion of a Gaussian wave packet of a single electron in a harmonic potential is obtained by solving the time dependent Schrödinger equation analytically. The analytic formula of the phase of the wave function which depends on both time and space is also presented explicitly. The probability density of the wave packet moves changing its width and central position periodically. The period of the change of the width is half of that of the central position. The interpretation of these periodic changes in terms of the Green's function which can be derived by the path integration formulation is also discussed.

Gaussian wave packet states of a generalized inverted harmonic oscillator with time-dependent mass and frequency

I. A. Pedrosa, Alberes Lopes de Lima, Alexandre M. de M. Carvalho

We derive quantum solutions of a generalized inverted or repulsive harmonic oscillator with arbitrary time-dependent mass and frequency using the quantum invariant method and linear invariants, and write its wave functions in terms of solutions of a second-order ordinary differential equation that describes the amplitude of the damped classical inverted oscillator. Afterwards, we construct Gaussian wave packet solutions and calculate the fluctuations in coordinate and momentum, the associated uncertainty relation, and the quantum correlations between coordinate and momentum. As a particular case, we apply our general development to the generalized inverted Caldirola–Kanai oscillator.

THEORY OF CONTROLLED QUANTUM DYNAMICS

Salvatore De Martino, Silvio De Siena, Fabrizio Illuminati

We introduce a general formalism, based on the stochastic formulation of quantum mechanics, to obtain localized quasi-classical wave packets as dynamically controlled systems, for arbitrary anharmonic potentials. The control is in general linear, and it amounts to introduce additional quadratic and linear time-dependent terms to the given potential. In this way one can construct for general systems either coherent packets moving with constant dispersion, or dynamically squeezed packets whose spreading remains bounded for all times. In the standard operatorial framework our scheme corresponds to a suitable generalization of the displacement and scaling operators that generate the coherent and squeezed states of the harmonic oscillator.
