Investigation of spontaneous magnetization of coupled 2 2 superconducting ring array

We present the theoretical investigation of spontaneous magnetization of a coupled 2 × 2 π ring array. It is indicated by free energy calculation that the system has the lowest energy when the four π rings have the full antiparallel configuration. Furthermore, the numerical evaluation results show that the system which favours full antiparallel spontaneous magnetization is a quantum effect deriving from the phase cohering of the superconducting quantum wavefunctions in the four superconducting rings through the shared Josephson junctions.

π-Loops With ds Josephson Junctions

Michael I. Faley, Pim Reith, Vasily S. Stolyarov +4 more

We fabricated Josephson junctions (JJs) between the d-wave superconductor (SC) YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) and the s-wave SC Nb (ds-JJs) on graphoepitaxially buffered MgO substrates, studied ds-JJs at temperatures down to 30 mK and employed these JJs in π-loops. Current-voltage characteristics of ds-JJs oriented along the [100] axis of YBCO exhibited up to a factor of 200 higher critical current densities than ds-JJs oriented along the [110] axis of YBCO. The critical current$I_{c}$and the$I_{c}R_{n}$product of [100]-oriented 3 μm wide ds-JJs are ∼70 μA and ∼200 μV, respectively, at 4.2 K. Rectangular arrays of up to 40 000 π-loops based on such ds-JJs were investigated using a low temperature scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscope. We observed ordering of spontaneously generated half integer magnetic flux quanta in the π-loops correlated with minute spurious background magnetic fields, as well as with configurations and mutual coupling of the π-loops. We manipulated the magnetic states of the π-loops by the local application of magnetic fields using nearby planar coils. This paper paves the way for the use of π-loops in computations that are based on annealing processes.

Direct observations of π-leaps of superconducting phase differences in π-junction-based SQUIDs

Yuto Takeshita, Feng Li, Masayuki Higashi +3 more

Abstract We directly observed π-leaps of superconducting phase differences in π-junction-based superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). The SQUIDs studied here are formed by introducing a π-junction to a conventional-junction (0-junction)-based direct current (DC)-SQUID, which is referred to as the 0-0-π SQUID. Either clockwise or counter-clockwise-circulating currents flow spontaneously in the 0-0-π SQUID because of a π-phase shift of the π-junction. In other words, the 0-0-π SQUID has a bistable state corresponding to the directions of circulating currents. π-leaps are generated by transiting between the two states of the bistable state. π-leaps are an ultra-fast phenomenon and are difficult to observe as they are. We prepared a half-flux quantum (HFQ)-SQUID that comprised two 0-0-π SQUIDs. π-leaps are reflected in a static characteristic, that is, a modulation pattern of the critical current in the HFQ-SQUID. We formed π-junctions with the PdNi layer on 0-junction-based circuits supplied by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. The modulation pattern of the HFQ-SQUID had a period corresponding to π-leaps as expected, although some microstructures were observed. We demonstrated that the microstructures originated from the asymmetry inside each 0-0-π SQUID by analyzing the relationship between the phase change of 0-0-π SQUIDs and the modulation patterns.
