Abstract

We study the magnetic orbital effect of a doped two-leg ladder in the presence of a magnetic field component perpendicular to the ladder plane. Combining both low-energy approach (bosonization) and numerical simulations (density-matrix renormalization group) on the strong coupling limit ($t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model), a rich phase diagram is established as a function of hole doping and magnetic flux. Above a critical flux, the spin gap is destroyed and a Luttinger liquid phase is stabilized. Above a second critical flux, a reentrance of the spin gap at high magnetic flux is found. Interestingly, the phase transitions are associated with a change of sign of the orbital susceptibility. Focusing on the small magnetic field regime, the spin-gapped superconducting phase is robust, but immediately acquires algebraic transverse (i.e., along rungs) current correlations which are commensurate with the $4{k}_{F}$ density correlations. In addition, we have computed the zero-field orbital susceptibility for a large range of doping and interaction ratio $J∕t$: we found strong anomalies at low $J∕t$ only in the vicinity of the commensurate fillings corresponding to $\ensuremath{\delta}=1∕4$ and $1∕2$. Furthermore, the behavior of the orbital susceptibility reveals that the nature of these insulating phases is different: while for $\ensuremath{\delta}=1∕4$ a $4{k}_{F}$ charge density wave is confirmed, the $\ensuremath{\delta}=1∕2$ phase is shown to be a bond order wave.

Incommensurate phases of a bosonic two-leg ladder under a flux

E. Orignac, R. Citro, M Di Dio +2 more

A boson two-leg ladder in the presence of a synthetic magnetic flux is investigated by means of bosonization techniques and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). We follow the quantum phase transition from the commensurate Meissner to the incommensurate vortex phase with increasing flux at different fillings. When the applied flux is ρπ and close to it, where ρ is the filling per rung, we find a second incommensuration in the vortex state that affects physical observables such as the momentum distribution, the rung–rung correlation function and the spin–spin and charge–charge static structure factors.

Doped two-leg ladder with ring exchange: Exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group computations

Guillaume Roux, Steven R. White, Sylvain Capponi +2 more

The effect of a ring exchange on doped two-leg ladders is investigated combining exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) computations. We focus on the nature and weights of the low-energy magnetic excitations and on superconducting pairing. The stability with respect to this cyclic term of a remarkable resonant mode originating from a hole pair-magnon bound state is examined. We also find that, near the zero-doping critical point separating rung-singlet and dimerized phases, doping reopens a spin gap.

Ground-state phase diagram of the extended two-leg t−J ladder

Xin Lu, Dai-Wei Qu, Yang Qi +2 more

Inspired by the observation of a robust $d$-wave superconducting phase driven by tuning the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) electron hopping in recent density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies of six- and eight-leg $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model, we systematically study the phase diagram of the two-leg $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ ladder with the NNN couplings (including NNN hopping and spin interaction) in a large region of doping level, by means of the DMRG calculations. Upon doping from half filling, we identify the Luther-Emery liquid (LEL) phase, which can be distinguished as the pairing-dominant and charge density-dominant regime by comparing the Luttinger parameter ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$. With the growing NNN couplings, pairing correlations are enhanced and correspondingly ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ increases, driving the system from the density-dominant to the pairing-dominant regime. In the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase in the larger doping region, we identify two TLL regimes with different features of charge density correlation. At the quarter filling ($1/2$ doping level), we find that the strong dimer orders of bond energy in the open system actually decay algebraically and thus do not indicate a spontaneous translational symmetry breaking. Our results show that in the LEL phase of the two-leg ladder, the NNN couplings seem to play the similar role as that on the wider $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ cylinder, and studies on this more accessible system can be helpful toward understanding the emergence of the remarkable $d$-wave superconducting phase on the wider system.

Pair-density-wave superconducting order in two-leg ladders

Akbar Jaefari, Eduardo Fradkin

We show using bosonization methods that extended Hubbard-Heisenberg models on two types of two leg ladders (without flux and with flux $\ensuremath{\pi}$ per plaquette) have commensurate pair-density-wave (PDW) phases. In the case of the conventional (flux-less) ladder, the PDW arises when certain filling fractions for which commensurability conditions are met. For the flux $\ensuremath{\pi}$ ladder, the PDW phase is generally present. The PDW phase is characterized by a finite spin gap and a superconducting order parameter with a finite (commensurate in this case) wave vector and power-law superconducting correlations. In this phase, the uniform superconducting order parameter, the $2{k}_{F}$ charge-density-wave (CDW) order parameter and the spin-density-wave N\'eel order parameter exhibit short range (exponentially decaying) correlations. We discuss in detail the case in which the bonding band of the ladder is half filled for which the PDW phase appears even at weak coupling. The PDW phase is shown to be dual to a uniform superconducting (SC) phase with quasi-long-range order. By making use of bosonization and the renormalization group, we determine the phase diagram of the spin-gapped regime and study the quantum phase transition. The phase boundary between PDW and the uniform SC ordered phases is found to be in the Ising universality class. We generalize the analysis to the case of other commensurate fillings of the bonding band, where we find higher-order commensurate PDW states for which we determine the form of the effective bosonized field theory and discuss the phase diagram. We compare our results with recent findings in the Kondo-Heisenberg chain. We show that the formation of PDW order in the ladder embodies the notion of intertwined orders.

Kinetic obstruction to pairing in the doped Kitaev-Heisenberg two-leg ladder

Bradraj Pandey, Bo Xiao, Satoshi Okamoto +4 more

Abstract Doped quantum magnets, especially spin liquids with fractionalized excitations, have long attracted attention as a promising path towards unconventional superconductivity. We investigate the hole-doped Kitaev-Heisenberg ( t – J – K ) model on a two-leg ladder geometry using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). We consider the behavior of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev spin-liquid phase as a function of hopping strength t and doping level. This reveals intriguing pairing tendencies only for $$\frac{t}{K}\lesssim 0.65$$ t K ≲ 0.65 , consistent with prior results on three-leg ladders, and firmly supports the emerging picture that the physics of doped Kitaev spin liquids strongly depends on the kinetic energy of the doped holes. Analysis of one- and two-hole doping uncovers close links between spatial profiles of the plaquette operator and the charge density. We also construct a doping-dependent phase diagram for antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions and intermediate hopping t = 1. Upon doping, the rung-singlet region develops dominant superconducting correlations. Spin-density wave-like behavior is found in the Kitaev limits, and in the stripy phase.

Recovery of a Luther-Emery phase in the three-band Hubbard ladder with longer-range hopping

Luhang Yang, Thomas Devereaux, Hong‐Chen Jiang

A lightly doped single-band Hubbard model on a two-leg ladder exhibits a Luther-Emery phase, whereas the three-band Hubbard ladder behaves as a Luttinger liquid upon hole doping. To understand this discrepancy, we present a systematic density-matrix renormalization group study of the three-band Hubbard model on two-leg cylinders with further-neighbor particle hoppings. The inclusion of the longer-range hopping is motivated by the studies of the single-band Hubbard model in which the further-neighbor hopping terms are suggested to be crucial for the unconventional superconductivity. When the longer-range hopping parameters are small, the ground state is a Luttinger liquid having mutually commensurate superconducting, charge, and spin density wave correlations. Increasing the longer-range hopping drives a transition into a Luther-Emery phase with quasi-long-ranged superconducting and charge orders but short-ranged spin-spin correlations. By down-folding the three-band Hubbard model into an effective $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}J\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ model, we find that in the Luther-Emery phase, both the nearest- and second-neighbor kinetic energies are enhanced due to an effective increase of copper-oxygen hybridization. Amplifying intercell oxygen orbital hopping mirrors the benefits of reducing the charge transfer energy, causing doped holes to favor oxygen orbitals and strengthening superconducting pairing.
