Dynamical localization of a particle coupled to a two-level systems thermal reservoir

Abstract

Using the functional-integral method, we investigate the effect of a two-level systems thermal reservoir on the single particle dynamics. We find that at low temperatures, within the sub-ohmic regime, the particle becomes {}``dynamically'' localized at long times due to an effective potential generated by the particle-reservoir interaction. This behavior is different from the one obtained for the usual bath of harmonic oscillators and is fundamentally related with the non-Markovian character of the dissipative process.

Quantum dynamics of a two-level system in a structured environment: Numerical study beyond perturbation theory

Johanna Charlotte Escher, Joachim Ankerhold

The dissipative quantum dynamics of a two-level system interacting with a structured reservoir consisting of a damped harmonic mode is investigated by means of the numerically exact path integral Monte Carlo method. This approach provides benchmark results in a broad range of parameter space, in particular, in those domains which are not accessible by approximate methods and alternative numerical schemes, that is, strong coupling between system and harmonic mode and from low to high temperatures. For low temperatures the numerical data are quantitatively in agreement with the noninteracting blip approximation only in the regimes of very weak and very strong coupling. It turns out that the entangled dynamics of the two-level system and the harmonic mode is relatively robust so that its signatures are observable up to relatively strong friction and high temperatures. Nonequilibrium initial preparations of the reservoir with respect to the initial state of the system give rise, for strong interactions, to a stepwise decay of the population, thus displaying coherent dynamics of the bath. The impact of an additional Ohmic bath coupled directly to the two-level system is studied as well, including the case where both reservoirs carry different temperatures.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a dissipative two-level system: Nonzero bias and sub-Ohmic bath

Congjun Gan, Hang Zheng

The quantum dynamics of the dissipative two-level system with nonzero bias and sub-Ohmic bath is studied by means of the perturbation approach based on a unitary transformation. It has been shown that for the sub-Ohmic bath it is necessary to use the non-Markovian approach, especially for the short time behavior of the coupled system and environment. The nonequilibrium correlation $P(t)$ has been calculated to show that a finite bias may favor the short time coherence. The spectrum of the susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\ensuremath{''}}(\ensuremath{\omega})$ of the sub-Ohmic case may have a double peak structure in the range of $\ensuremath{\omega}>0$ when the coupling $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ is relatively strong. Besides, the coherence-decoherence transition point ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$ is determined for different $0<s\ensuremath{\le}1$ by the condition of ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\ensuremath{''}}(\ensuremath{\omega}=0)=\ensuremath{\infty}$ when $\ensuremath{\alpha}={\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$. Finally, we show that Shiba's relation is exactly satisfied in our results.

Bipartite entanglement dynamics of two-level systems in sub-Ohmic reservoirs

Denis Kast, Joachim Ankerhold

The quantum dynamics of pairs of two-level systems immersed in dissipative reservoirs with sub-Ohmic spectral distributions is studied by means of numerically exact path integral Monte Carlo methods. It is shown that this class of reservoirs, relevant for generic properties of strongly non-Markovian environments with possible realizations in solid state structures at cryogenic temperatures, supports bipartite entanglement in broad ranges of parameter space and even for broken symmetries and in the presence of thermal noise. The sensitivity of the creation of entanglement in nonequilibrium on the initial preparations of the reservoir is investigated in detail.

Aging effects in the quantum dynamics of a dissipative free particle: Non-Ohmic case

A. Mauger, No¨elle Pottier

We report the results related to the two-time dynamics of the coordinate of a quantum free particle, damped through its interaction with a fractal thermal bath (non-Ohmic coupling approximately omega(delta) with 0<delta <1 or 1<delta <2). When the particle is localized, its position does not age. When it undergoes anomalous diffusion, only its displacement may be defined. It is shown to be an aging variable. The finite temperature aging regime is self-similar. It is described by a scaling function of the ratio t(w)/tau of the waiting time to the observation time, as characterized by an exponent directly linked to delta.

Environment-dependent dissipation in quantum Brownian motion

J. Paavola, Jyrki Piilo, Kalle‐Antti Suominen +1 more

The dissipative dynamics of a quantum Brownian particle is studied for different types of environment. We derive analytic results for the time evolution of the mean energy of the system for Ohmic, sub-Ohmic, and super-Ohmic environments, without performing the Markovian approximation. Our results allow one to establish a direct link between the form of the environmental spectrum and the thermalization dynamics. This in turn leads to a natural explanation of the microscopic physical processes ruling the system time evolution both in the short-time non-Markovian region and in the long-time Markovian one. Our comparative study of thermalization for different environments sheds light on the physical contexts in which non-Markovian dissipation effects are dominant.

Multi-State Quantum Dissipative Dynamics in Sub-Ohmic Environment: The Strong Coupling Regime

Luca Magazzù, Davide Valenti, Angelo C. M. Carollo +1 more

We study the dissipative quantum dynamics and the asymptotic behavior of a particle in a bistable potential interacting with a sub-Ohmic broadband environment. The reduced dynamics, in the intermediate to strong dissipation regime, is obtained beyond the two-level system approximation by using a real-time path integral approach. We find a crossover dynamic regime with damped intra-well oscillations and incoherent tunneling and a completely incoherent regime at strong damping. Moreover, a nonmonotonic behavior of the left/right well population difference is found as a function of the damping strength.
