The Cauchy Problem for a Forced Harmonic Oscillator

Abstract

We construct an explicit solution of the Cauchy initial value problem for the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation with a time-dependent Hamiltonian operator for the forced harmonic oscillator. The corresponding Green function (propagator) is derived with the help of the generalized Fourier transform and a relation with representations of the Heisenberg-Weyl group N(3) in a certain special case first, and then is extended to the general case. A three parameter extension of the classical Fourier integral is discussed as a by-product. Motion of a particle with a spin in uniform perpendicular magnetic and electric fields is considered as an application; a transition amplitude between Landau levels is evaluated in terms of Charlier polynomials. In addition, we also solve an initial value problem to a similar diffusion-type equation.

Solution of the Cauchy problem for a time-dependent Schrödinger equation

Maria Meiler, Ricardo Cordero–Soto, Sergeĭ K. Suslov

We construct an explicit solution of the Cauchy initial value problem for the n-dimensional Schrödinger equation with certain time-dependent Hamiltonian operator of a modified oscillator. The dynamical SU(1,1) symmetry of the harmonic oscillator wave functions, Bargmann’s functions for the discrete positive series of the irreducible representations of this group, the Fourier integral of a weighted product of the Meixner–Pollaczek polynomials, a Hankel-type integral transform, and the hyperspherical harmonics are utilized in order to derive the corresponding Green function. It is then generalized to a case of the forced modified oscillator. The propagators for two models of the relativistic oscillator are also found. An expansion formula of a plane wave in terms of the hyperspherical harmonics and solution of certain infinite system of ordinary differential equations are derived as by-products.

Models of damped oscillators in quantum mechanics

Ricardo Cordero–Soto, Erwin Suazo, Sergeĭ K. Suslov

We consider several models of the damped oscillators in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics in a framework of a general approach to the dynamics of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation with variable quadratic Hamiltonians. The Green functions are explicitly found in terms of elementary functions and the corresponding gauge transformations are discussed. The factorization technique is applied to the case of a shifted harmonic oscillator. The time-evolution of the expectation values of the energy related operators is determined for two models of the quantum damped oscillators under consideration. The classical equations of motion for the damped oscillations are derived for the corresponding expectation values of the position operator.

A systematic approach for obtaining the Green functions of time-dependent Schrödinger equations by Fourier transform

Gin-yih Tsaur, Jyhpyng Wang

Abstract The Green function method is a powerful technique for solving the initial value problem in quantum mechanics. Once the Green function is solved the whole wavefunction evolution is represented in a concise form and can be evaluated conveniently by numerical integration. We present a method for constructing the Green functions systematically which is different from the conventional methods of eigenfunction expansion or path integration. By using variable changing, function substitution, and Fourier transforms, the time dependent Schrödinger equations can be simplified and the solutions for the simplified equations can be easily derived. We then obtain the Green functions for the original equations by the reverse transforms. The method is demonstrated for the linear potential, the harmonic oscillator, the centrifugal potential, and the centripetal barrier oscillator, where the Green function for the centripetal barrier oscillator has not been solved previously by conventional methods. The method and examples illustrated in this paper can be utilised to strengthen undergraduate courses on quantum mechanics and/or partial differential equation.

Solutions to linear dissipative quantum systems

Pablo Carlos López Vázquez, Roberto Santos-Silva, Andrés García

We use the characteristic function of the Wigner function (its double Fourier transform) to give solution to any generic open quantum linear systems (systems whose Hamiltonian is at most quadratic). The solution is carried out in terms of the application of the transition matrix of the dynamical evolution in the Fourier space. We address two cases: the time-independent coefficients for which we give the solutions for several dissipative models of the quantum harmonic oscillator and the one-dimensional free particle. In the latter, we also derive a heuristic model for a pure damped motion with suppression of diffusion. For the time-dependent coefficient problem, we give some particular cases that are integrable and derive a second order approximation to the generic case in which all parameters are time-dependent. We additionally explore the solutions of the system when the diffusion processes of the dissipative model lie beyond the weak coupling limit.

Exact solution of a time-dependent quantal harmonic oscillator with damping and a perturbative force

Dinkar C. Khandekar, S. V. Lawande

The problem of a quantal harmonic oscillator with damping and a time-dependent frequency acted on by a time-dependent perturbative force is exactly solved. The wavefunctions are found in Schrödinger representation using the theory of explicitly time-dependent invariants and also by an expansion of the Feynman propagator. The propagator is obtained in exactly closed form by an explicit path integration of the classical Lagrangian. It is found that the wavefunctions and the propagator depend only on the solution of classical damped oscillator through a single function ρ (t). The function ρ (t) itself may be obtained as a solution of a second order nonlinear differential equation under the appropriate set of initial conditions.
