Non-classical effects in wave packet dynamics

Abstract

Treating the ideal coherent state as a reference state, the effects due to departure from coherence of an initial wave packet propagating through a nonlinear medium, were examined, specifically in the context of non-classical effects such as revivals, fractional revivals, squeezing and higher-order squeezing during its temporal evolution. Further, these studies were extended to examine the role of quantum entanglement in bipartite systems. The dynamics of quantum expectation values were tracked carefully in various cases and the conditions under which a wave packet spreads chaotically, were investigated.

Signatures of wave packet revival phenomena in the expectation values of observables

C. Sudheesh, S. Lakshmibala, V. Balakrishnan

Wave packet revivals and fractional revivals are striking quantum interference phenomena that can occur under suitable conditions in a system with a nonlinear spectrum. In the framework of a specific model (the propagation of an initially coherent wave packet in a Kerr-like medium), it is shown that distinctive signatures of these revivals and fractional revivals are displayed by the time evolution of the expectation values of physical observables and their powers, i.e., by experimentally measurable quantities. Moreover, different fractional revivals can be selectively identified by examining appropriate higher moments.

Wave packet dynamics of entangled two-mode states

C. Sudheesh, V. Balakrishnan, S. Lakshmibala

We consider a model Hamiltonian describing the interaction of a single-mode radiation field with the atoms of a nonlinear medium, and study the dynamics of entanglement for specific non-entangled initial states of interest: namely, those in which the field mode is initially in a Fock state, a coherent state, or a photon-added coherent state. The counterparts of near-revivals and fractional revivals are shown to be clearly identifiable in the entropy of entanglement. The ``overlap fidelity'' of the system is another such indicator, and its behaviour corroborates that of the entropy of entanglement in the vicinity of near-revivals. The expectation values and higher moments of suitable quadrature variables are also examined, with reference to possible squeezing and higher-order squeezing.

Wave packet dynamics of photon-added coherent states

C. Sudheesh, S. Lakshmibala, V. Balakrishnan

We show in the framework of a tractable model that revivals and fractional revivals of wave packets afford clear signatures of the extent of departure from coherence and from Poisson statistics of an initial state of the radiation field propagating in a nonlinear medium. We establish this by considering a generic Hamiltonian which models wave packet propagation in a Kerr-like medium, and comparing the non-classical effects displayed by an initial photon-added coherent state with that of an inital ideal coherent state.

When the nonlinearity in the Hamiltonian is weak, these show signatures of quasiperiodicity.

Fractional Revival Dynamics in Kerr-Type Systems: Angular Momentum Moments and Classical Analogs

Ashish Kumar Patra, Saikumar Krithivasan

Wave packet revivals and fractional revivals are hallmark quantum interference phenomena that arise in systems with nonlinear energy spectra, and their signatures in expectation values of observables have been studied extensively in earlier work. In this article, we build on these studies and extend the analysis in two important directions. First, we investigate fractional revival dynamics in angular momentum observables, deriving explicit expressions for the time evolution of their moments and demonstrating that higher-order angular momentum moments provide clear and selective signatures of fractional revivals. Second, we examine classical analogs of quantum revival phenomena and elucidate structural similarities between quantum fractional revivals and recurrence behavior in representative classical systems. Using the Kerr-type nonlinear Hamiltonian as a paradigmatic model, we analyze the autocorrelation function, moment dynamics, and phase-space structures, supported by visualizations such as quantum carpets. Our results broaden the range of experimentally accessible diagnostics of fractional revivals and provide a unified perspective on revival phenomena across quantum and classical dynamical systems.

Fractional revivals of superposed coherent states

M. Rohith, C Sudheesh

We study the dynamics of superposed wave packets in a specific nonlinear Hamiltonian which models the wave packet propagation in Kerr-like media and the dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensates. We show the dependence of fractional revival times on the initial superposed wave packets using analysis based on the expectation values, Rényi entropy and Wigner function. We also show how the selective identification of fractional revivals using moments of appropriate observables depends on the number of wave packets present in the initial state.
