Abstract

We discuss the implications of approximate particle-hole symmetry in a half-filled Landau level in which a paired quantum Hall state forms. We note that the Pfaffian state is not particle-hole symmetric. Therefore, in the limit of vanishing Landau-level mixing, in which particle-hole transformation is an exact symmetry, the Pfaffian spontaneously breaks this symmetry. There is a particle-hole conjugate state, which we call the anti-Pfaffian, which is degenerate with the Pfaffian in this limit. We observe that strong Landau-level mixing should favor the Pfaffian, but it is an open problem which state is favored for the moderate Landau-level mixing which is present in experiments. We discuss the bulk and edge physics of the anti-Pfaffian. We analyze a simplified model in which transitions between analogs of the two states can be studied in detail. Finally, we discuss experimental implications.

Breaking of Particle-Hole Symmetry by Landau Level Mixing in the ν=5/2 Quantized Hall State

Edward H. Rezayi, Steven H. Simon

We perform numerical studies to determine if the fractional quantum Hall state observed at a filling factor of ν=5/2 is the Moore-Read wave function or its particle-hole conjugate, the so-called anti-Pfaffian. Using a truncated Hilbert space approach we find that, for realistic interactions, including Landau-level mixing, the ground state remains fully polarized and the anti-Pfaffian is strongly favored.

Landau Level Mixing and the Ground State of the ν=5/2 Quantum Hall Effect

Edward H. Rezayi

Inter-Landau-level transitions break particle hole symmetry and will choose either the Pfaffian or the anti-Pfaffian state as the absolute ground state at 5/2 filling of the fractional quantum Hall effect. An approach based on truncating the Hilbert space has favored the anti-Pfaffian. A second approach based on an effective Hamiltonian produced the Pfaffian. In this Letter, perturbation theory is applied to finite sizes without bias to any specific pseudopotential component. This method also singles out the anti-Pfaffian. A critical piece of the effective Hamiltonian, which was absent in previous studies, reverts the ground state at 5/2 to the anti-Pfaffian.

Quantum Phase Transitions and the ν = 5 / 2 Fractional Hall State in Wide Quantum Wells

Zlatko Papić, F. D. M. Haldane, Edward H. Rezayi

We study the nature of the ν=5/2 quantum Hall state in wide quantum wells under the mixing of electronic subbands and Landau levels. A general method is introduced to analyze the Moore-Read pfaffian state and its particle-hole conjugate, the anti-pfaffian state, under periodic boundary conditions in a "quartered" Brillouin zone scheme containing both even and odd numbers of electrons. By examining the rotational quantum numbers on the torus, we show spontaneous breaking of the particle-hole symmetry can be observed in finite-size systems. In the presence of electronic-subband and Landau-level mixing, the particle-hole symmetry is broken in such a way that the anti-pfaffian state is unambiguously favored, and becomes more robust in the vicinity of a transition to the compressible phase, in agreement with recent experiments.

Stabilization of the Particle-Hole Pfaffian Order by Landau-Level Mixing and Impurities That Break Particle-Hole Symmetry

Philip Zucker, Dima E. Feldman

Numerical results suggest that the quantum Hall effect at ν=5/2 is described by the Pfaffian or anti-Pfaffian state in the absence of disorder and Landau-level mixing. Those states are incompatible with the observed transport properties of GaAs heterostructures, where disorder and Landau-level mixing are strong. We show that the recent proposal of a particle-hole (PH)-Pfaffian topological order by Son is consistent with all experiments. The absence of particle-hole symmetry at ν=5/2 is not an obstacle to the existence of the PH-Pfaffian order since the order is robust to symmetry breaking.

Paired states in half-filled Landau levels

Milica V. Milovanović

We discuss monolayer and bilayer quantum Hall systems in which each layer is a half-filled Landau level (LL) system. In the mean field approximation of the Son's formalism, there is a common pairing structure that underlines the possibilities for paired ground states in both systems. We argue that the particle-hole (PH) Pfaffian state in the (particle-hole symmetric) half-filled LL of a monolayer, and analogous state in the PH symmetric bilayer (in which each layer is half-filled LL) can be considered as critical states, i.e., states that cannot describe a phase under PH symmetry. We point out that the inclusion of a PH symmetry breaking (like LL mixing) may stabilize the PH Pfaffian in a monolayer. In the bilayer case, in numerical experiments on a sphere, by choosing the PH symmetric shift, we can stabilize the interlayer correlated (111) excitonic state or critical state, for any distance between the layers, but in general, with no bias, the evolution of the bilayer includes other phases.
