Large deviations and Chernoff bound for certain correlated states on a spin chain

Abstract

In this paper we extend the results of Lenci and Rey-Bellet [J. Stat. Phys. 119, 715 (2005)] on the large deviation upper bound of the distribution measures of local Hamiltonians with respect to a Gibbs state in the setting of translation-invariant finite-range interactions. We show that a certain factorization property of the reference state is sufficient for a large deviation upper bound to hold and that this factorization property is satisfied by Gibbs states of the above kind as well as finitely correlated states. As an application of the methods, the Chernoff bound for correlated states with factorization property is studied. In the specific case of the distributions of the ergodic averages of a one-site observable with respect to an ergodic finitely correlated state, the spectral theory of positive maps is applied to prove the full large deviation principle.

Error exponents in hypothesis testing for correlated states on a spin chain

Fumio Hiai, Milán Mosonyi, Tomohiro Ogawa

We study various error exponents in a binary hypothesis testing problem and extend recent results on the quantum Chernoff and Hoeffding bounds for product states to a setting when both the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis can be correlated states on a spin chain. Our results apply to states satisfying a certain factorization property; typical examples are the global Gibbs states of translation-invariant finite-range interactions as well as certain finitely correlated states.

Free energy density for mean field perturbation of states of a one-dimensional spin chain

Fumio Hiai, Milán Mosonyi, Hiromichi Ohno +1 more

Motivated by recent developments on large deviations in states of the spin chain, we reconsider the work of Petz, Raggio and Verbeure in 1989 on the variational expression of free energy density in the presence of a mean field type perturbation. We extend their results from the product state case to the Gibbs state case in the setting of translation-invariant interactions of finite range. In the special case of a locally faithful quantum Markov state, we clarify the relation between two different kinds of free energy densities (or pressure functions).

From Decay of Correlations to Locality and Stability of the Gibbs State

Ángela Capel, Massimo Moscolari, Stefan Teufel +1 more

Abstract We show that whenever the Gibbs state of a quantum spin system satisfies decay of correlations, then it is stable, in the sense that local perturbations affect the Gibbs state only locally, and it satisfies local indistinguishability, i.e. it exhibits local insensitivity to system size. These implications hold in any dimension, require only locality of the Hamiltonian, and are based on Lieb–Robinson bounds and on a detailed analysis of the locality properties of the quantum belief propagation for Gibbs states. To demonstrate the versatility of our approach, we explicitly apply our results to several physically relevant models in which the decay of correlations is either known to hold or is proved by us. These include Gibbs states of one-dimensional spin chains with polynomially decaying interactions at any temperature, and high-temperature Gibbs states of quantum spin systems with finite-range interactions in any dimension. We also prove exponential decay of correlations above a threshold temperature for Gibbs states of one-dimensional finite spin chains with translation-invariant and exponentially decaying interactions, and then apply our general results.

Exponential decay of mutual information for Gibbs states of local Hamiltonians

Andreas Blühm, Ángela Capel, Antonio Pérez

The thermal equilibrium properties of physical systems can be described using Gibbs states. It is therefore of great interest to know when such states allow for an easy description. In particular, this is the case if correlations between distant regions are small. In this work, we consider 1D quantum spin systems with local, finite-range, translation-invariant interactions at any temperature. In this setting, we show that Gibbs states satisfy uniform exponential decay of correlations and, moreover, the mutual information between two regions decays exponentially with their distance, irrespective of the temperature. In order to prove the latter, we show that exponential decay of correlations of the infinite-chain thermal states, exponential uniform clustering and exponential decay of the mutual information are equivalent for 1D quantum spin systems with local, finite-range interactions at any temperature. In particular, Araki's seminal results yields that the three conditions hold in the translation-invariant case. The methods we use are based on the Belavkin-Staszewski relative entropy and on techniques developed by Araki. Moreover, we find that the Gibbs states of the systems we consider are superexponentially close to saturating the data-processing inequality for the Belavkin-Staszewski relative entropy.

Quantum Hoeffding bound for states on a spin chain

Fumio Hiai, Milán Mosonyi, Tomohiro Ogawa

We extend recent results on the quantum Hoeffding bound from the i.i.d. setting to a setting when both the null-hypothesis and the counter-hypothesis can be correlated states of a spin chain. The key property in the extension is a certain factorization property of the states. Typical examples with this property are the global Gibbs states of translationinvariant finite-range interactions. 1
