Abstract

We present a general theoretical method to generate maximally entangled mixed states of a pair of photons initially prepared in the singlet polarization state. This method requires only local operations upon a single photon of the pair and exploits spatial degrees of freedom to induce decoherence. We report also experimental confirmation of these theoretical results.

Spatial Bell-State Generation without Transverse Mode Subspace Postselection

E. V. Kovlakov, I. B. Bobrov, Stanislav S. Straupe +1 more

Spatial states of single photons and spatially entangled photon pairs are becoming an important resource in quantum communication. This additional degree of freedom provides an almost unlimited information capacity, making the development of high-quality sources of spatial entanglement a well-motivated research direction. We report an experimental method for generation of photon pairs in a maximally entangled spatial state. In contrast to existing techniques, the method does not require postselection of a particular subspace of spatial modes and allows one to use the full photon flux from the nonlinear crystal, providing a tool for creating high-brightness sources of pure spatially entangled photons. Such sources are a prerequisite for emerging applications in free-space quantum communication.

Polarization-entangled photon pairs generation via interference of nonorthogonal quantum states

Dmitry N. Frolovtsev, Sergey A Magnitskiy

We report a new method for generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs in maximally entangled polarization states. Our approach is based on quantum interference between two polarization states which are non-orthogonal. We present necessary and sufficient conditions for generation the photon pair in a maximally entangled state. The effect of dependence of entanglement on the phase between the interfering states of photons is investigated theoretically and demonstrated experimentally with quantum states produced via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the double-crystal scheme.

Generation and Characterization of Werner States and Maximally Entangled Mixed States by a Universal Source of Entanglement

Marco Barbieri, F. De Martini, G. Di Nepi +1 more

We present a novel technique for generating two-photon polarization mixed states of any structure, which is based on the peculiar spatial characteristics of a high brilliance source of entangled pairs. Werner states and maximally entangled mixed states, two well-known families of mixed states important for quantum information, have been created and fully characterized by this technique. We have also investigated and tested the nonlocal properties of these states.

Auxiliary entanglement in photon pairs for multi-photon entanglement

Warren P. Grice, Ryan S. Bennink, Philip G. Evans +2 more

A growing number of experiments make use of multiple pairs of photons generated in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We show that entanglement in unwanted degrees of freedom can adversely affect the results of these experiments. We also discuss techniques to reduce or eliminate spectral and spatial entanglement, and we present results from two-photon polarization-entangled source with almost no entanglement in these degrees of freedom. Finally, we present two methods for the generation of four-photon polarization-entangled states. In one of these methods, four-photon can be generated without the need for intermediate two-photon entanglement.

Scheme for purifying a general mixed entangled state and its linear optical implementation

Dong Dong, Yan‐Lei Zhang, Chang‐Ling Zou +2 more

We propose a scheme for purification of a general mixed entangled state. In this scheme, we start from a large number of general mixed entangled states and end up, after local operation and classical communication, with a smaller number of Bell diagonal states with higher entanglement. In particular, the scheme can purify one maximally entangled state from two entangled pairs prepared in a class of mixed entangled state. Furthermore we propose a linear optical implementation of the present scheme with polarization beam splitters and photon detectors.
