Abstract

A class of exact spin ground states with nonzero averages of vector spin chirality, $$, is presented. It is obtained by applying non-uniform O(2) rotations of spin operators in the XY plane on the SU(2)-invariant Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) states and their parent Hamiltonians. Excitation energies of the new ground states are studied with the use of single-mode approximation in one dimension for S=1. The excitation gap remains robust. Construction of chiral AKLT states is shown to be possible in higher dimensions. We also present a general idea to produce vector chirality-condensed ground states as non-uniform O(2) rotations of the non-chiral parent states. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is shown to imply non-zero spin chirality.

Chiral spin liquids in arrays of spin chains

We describe a coupled-chain construction for chiral spin liquids in two-dimensional spin systems. Starting from a one-dimensional zigzag spin chain and imposing SU(2) symmetry in the framework of non-Abelian bosonization, we first show that our approach faithfully describes the low-energy physics of an exactly solvable model with a three-spin interaction. Generalizing the construction to the two-dimensional case, we obtain a theory that incorporates the universal properties of the chiral spin liquid predicted by Kalmeyer and Laughlin: charge-neutral edge states, gapped spin-1/2 bulk excitations, and ground-state degeneracy on the torus signaling the topological order of this quantum state. In addition, we show that the chiral spin liquid phase is more easily stabilized in frustrated lattices containing corner-sharing triangles, such as the extended kagome lattice, than in the triangular lattice. Our field-theoretical approach invites generalizations to more exotic chiral spin liquids and may be used to assess the existence of the chiral spin liquid as the ground state of specific lattice systems.

Spin chirality driven by the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction in one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chain

Guo Xing, Yaojin Li, Zimeng Yao +2 more

Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interactions cause many interesting physical features, such as topologically nontrivial magnetic skyrmions and chiral domain walls. These interactions become more pronounced in low-dimensional systems. We investigated a one-dimensional Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain with an asymmetric DM interaction. The results show that, upon applying a nonzero DM interaction, the Néel ground state transitions to a spin chiral phase. Moreover, using the mean-field approximation, we obtain the dispersion of the energy spectrum, from which the z-axis spin chirality is calculated as a function of the strength of the DM interaction for low-lying excitations. The results indicate that the DM interaction facilitates chirality for Dz ≤ J and induces a spin-gapped chiral state.

Chirality and Flux in Two-Dimensional Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnets –Exact Diagonalization Study–

Masatoshi Imada

The possibility of chiral symmetry breaking in quantum spin systems is examined by the extrapolation of exactly diagonalized results on finite lattices in the ground state. Both on the triangular and the square lattice, linear dependence of squared chirality on the inverse linear size in the free boundary condition strongly suggests that the correlation of chirality defined by S 1 ·( S 2 × S 3 ) is short-ranged in the thermodynamic limit, which also leads to the absence of the flux state.

Chirality operators for Heisenberg spin systems

V. Subrahmanyam

The ground state of closed Heisenberg spin chains with an odd number of sites has a chiral degeneracy, in addition to a twofold Kramers degeneracy. A nonzero chirality implies that the spins are not coplanar, and is a measure of handedness. The chirality operator, which can be treated as a spin-1/2 operator, is explicitly constructed in terms of the spin operators, and is given as commutator of permutation operators.

TOPOLOGICAL ORDERS IN RIGID STATES

Xiao-Gang Wen

We study a new kind of ordering — topological order — in rigid states (the states with no local gapless excitations). We concentrate on characterization of the different topological orders. As an example we discuss in detail chiral spin states of 2 + 1 dimensional spin systems. Chiral spin states are described by the topological Chern-Simons theories in the continuum limit. We show that the topological orders can be characterized by a non-Abelian gauge structure over the moduli space which parametrizes a family of the model Hamiltonians supporting topologically ordered ground states. In 2 + 1 dimensions, the non-Abelian gauge structure determines possible fractional statistics of the quasi-particle excitations over the topologically ordered ground states. The dynamics of the low lying global excitations is shown to be independent of random spatial dependent perturbations. The ground state degeneracy and the non-Abelian gauge structures discussed in this paper are very robust, even against those perturbations that break translation symmetry. We also discuss the symmetry properties of the degenerate ground states of chiral spin states. We find that some degenerate ground states of chiral spin states on torus carry non-trivial quantum numbers of the 90° rotation.
